AEM SEO makes Adobe Experience Manager pages discoverable and indexable, with consistent public URLs across shared templates, generated sitemaps and regional sites. Start with the delivery model. AEM Sites with Sling and Dispatcher needs different configuration from Edge Delivery Services. Check the cached public response too. A correct field in the authoring interface doesn't prove that search engines receive the right output.

I'm Brenden House, founder of Searchmaxxed. We do technical SEO and AI SEO for companies that need their product, industry and comparison pages found. This guide connects Adobe's configuration details to the decisions an enterprise marketing team needs to make.

The Adobe documentation cited below was checked on 27 October 2026, AEST.

## In summary

- Identify your delivery model first. A Sling sitemap configuration does not control the sitemap generated for an Edge Delivery Services site.
- Give each indexable page a consistent public URL across its canonical, internal links and sitemap entry.
- Test regional pages after rollouts, using deliberate inheritance rules that preserve local differences wherever regional products, availability and enquiry routes need separate control.
- Check production responses after publishing. Cache invalidation belongs in the SEO test, alongside metadata and redirects.
- Start with commercially important page families. Searchmaxxed's technical work connects those fixes to indexing, search visibility and enquiries.

## What does AEM SEO involve for an enterprise site?

AEM SEO involves authoring controls, shared page code and the infrastructure that serves published content. The work crosses team boundaries. A marketing editor can change a title, while a developer may need to correct how the page component generates its canonical URL.

Adobe's [Cloud Service SEO documentation](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/experience-manager-cloud-service/content/overview/seo-and-url-management) covers URL mapping, canonicals, sitemaps and redirects. Its last update was 9 October 2026.

For an enterprise team, the starting point is a map of page families: products, industries, integrations, resources and regional versions. Which ones should attract buyers? Which ones already do?

Our [technical SEO service](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/services/technical-seo) checks crawl access, rendering, indexing, speed and schema, then measures the effect of those changes on pages that produce enquiries. Agree engineering responsibilities before implementation starts.

| Your delivery setup | Where to investigate first | What not to assume |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AEM Sites using Sling and Dispatcher | Page components, page properties, Sling mappings, sitemap jobs and cache rules | Selecting a sitemap root completes background generation |
| AEM 6.5 | Installed service pack, custom components and existing sitemap implementation | Current Cloud instructions match every older installation |
| Edge Delivery Services | Production domain, metadata, sitemap configuration, blocks and CDN behaviour | Dispatcher or Sling instructions apply to this delivery path |

Adobe documents the Sling sitemap product feature from AEM **6.5.11.0** in its [6.5 SEO guide](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/experience-manager-65/content/managing/managing-further-reference/seo-and-url-management), updated 9 October 2026. Check your version.

The delivery paths can coexist. Classify each part of the estate by how it publishes content before assigning work from this table.

## How should templates and components handle SEO?

AEM templates and components should produce consistent metadata, headings, links and structured data while allowing the page-level differences that make each product useful. Test the output. Authoring controls need working component code.

Adobe's [Page Properties reference](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/experience-manager-cloud-service/content/sites/authoring/sites-console/page-properties), updated 9 October 2026, separates Title, Page Title and Navigation Title. Canonical overrides and JSON-LD appear too.

Those distinctions matter. A concise navigation label can work well in a menu while the search title explains the product and its intended customer more fully.

Turn the following into acceptance criteria for each important template:

| Element | What the reviewer checks |
| --- | --- |
| Title and description | Published values explain this page, rather than repeating the parent category |
| Main heading | The heading describes the visible topic and agrees with the page's purpose |
| Navigation and content links | Links use the intended public URLs after mapping |
| Canonical and robots | The final HTML contains the approved URL and indexing instructions |
| Structured data | JSON-LD describes the content and facts visitors can see |
| Images and mobile layout | Meaningful alt text, readable specifications and usable enquiry forms |

Searchmaxxed's technical scope includes template profiling and schema checks, making shared components a useful starting point when faults repeat across a product family.

Spare editors the repetitive fixes. Fix the shared rule where the fault originates, then check the exceptions before applying it more widely.

## How do you configure an AEM sitemap?

For Sling-based AEM Sites, define the sitemap root and configure generation, then verify the XML through the public domain. Background scheduling is opt-in because Adobe supplies no `SitemapScheduler` configuration.

That omission deserves attention. The field cannot prove that generation runs on schedule or that newly published product pages appear in the file visitors can request.

Adobe's [sitemap instructions](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/experience-manager-cloud-service/content/overview/seo-and-url-management#building-an-xml-sitemap-on-aem) document the following controls:

- Set `sling:sitemapRoot` to `true` on the appropriate resource, or use the corresponding page property.
- Configure `org.apache.sling.sitemap.impl.SitemapScheduler` for background generation.
- Choose a schedule that matches publishing needs rather than copying an example unchanged.
- Verify the public sitemap and sitemap-index selector routes through your delivery configuration.
- Inspect the generated URLs, exclusions and language alternatives.

The default AEM Sites generator outputs canonical URLs and available language alternatives, so inspect both before adding custom code to solve a suspected omission. Adobe generally recommends generation on the publish tier because URL mappings commonly exist there.

Review custom generators too. Adobe's example preserves checks for published, non-redirected, non-protected pages without `noindex`; custom code should not accidentally discard those exclusions.

For Searchmaxxed, sitemap engineering belongs with indexation checks. Parsing the file is only the beginning: its contents must represent the published pages that the business intends prospective customers to find.

### What changes with Edge Delivery Services?

Edge Delivery has a different sitemap system. Adobe documents automatic generation, query-index-based generation and manual configuration in its [Sitemaps reference](https://www.aem.live/developer/sitemap), checked 27 October 2026.

Identify the active mode first. For manually configured indexes and sitemaps, Adobe says the index must include the `robots` property to exclude pages marked `noindex`.

Also check `cdn.prod.host`, which controls the production hostname used in external URLs. A valid XML file pointing to the wrong host is still wrong.

## How should AEM canonical tags work?

An AEM canonical tag identifies the preferred URL for a page when alternative addresses serve equivalent content. Decide that URL first. Then make the published tag, sitemap and internal links agree with it.

Adobe's Page Properties documentation says **Canonical Url** overrides the page's canonical; when blank, the page's own URL is used. Custom components still need checking.

For a fictional SaaS product page, the intended output might be:

```
<link rel="canonical" href="https://www.example.com/au/platform/">
```

The production hostname matters. So do the path and your chosen extension convention.

Review vanity URLs, print selectors, campaign parameters and internal `/content/` paths against that decision. Adobe's SEO guide specifically discusses canonical handling for alternative paths and selectors.

Our [canonical tags guide](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/canonical-tags) explains the broader decision. For AEM, add a check that the URL builder respects public mappings rather than exposing repository paths.

### How do Edge Delivery canonical settings differ?

Edge Delivery generates its canonical from the configured production domain unless the `canonical` metadata property overrides it. Adobe documents this in [Page Metadata](https://www.aem.live/docs/metadata), checked 27 October 2026.

There is a migration detail worth checking. Metadata uses `canonical:extension` to specify a canonical extension, while sitemap configuration has its own `extension` property.

Changing one is insufficient evidence: verify both outputs against the intended public address, particularly when keeping legacy `.html` URLs after a migration.

Adobe's [go-live checklist](https://www.aem.live/docs/go-live-checklist) also says canonical targets should return successful HTML responses, rather than redirects or errors. Test the target itself.

## How do redirects and Dispatcher caching affect AEM SEO?

Redirects move visitors to another URL; internal rewrites resolve a request without changing the browser's address. Keep them distinct. Cache configuration then determines whether visitors receive the current version of that page.

Adobe's Cloud Page Properties documentation describes **Redirect** as a temporary **302** by default. Selecting **Permanent Redirect** changes the response to **301**, so check that this option matches the purpose of the move before publishing it.

Don't infer permanence from the label. Inspect the published response instead.

For legacy URL changes, Adobe's SEO guide recommends implementing and testing permanent redirects. Build the mapping around the closest relevant replacement, then update links to that destination.

### Why can a published SEO fix remain invisible?

A published change can remain invisible when the cache entry and invalidation request refer to different paths. Adobe gives a concrete example in its [URL rewriting documentation](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/experience-manager-cloud-service/content/overview/seo-and-url-management#url-rewriting).

The Dispatcher caches `/my-page.html`, but the flush request names `/content/my-brand/my-page`, leaving the old response in place because the cached path and invalidation path don't match.

That's the diagnostic clue. If author and publish look correct but the public page doesn't, compare the mapping, cached path and invalidation behaviour before editing the content again.

Adobe describes mapping shortened URLs back before the Dispatcher module as an approach that keeps invalidation aligned. Ask your platform owner to investigate.

Searchmaxxed verifies technical fixes on the live site. For this failure, that means checking the public canonical and page content after cache invalidation, not closing the task from an author screenshot.

## How should Multi Site Manager and hreflang work together?

Multi Site Manager controls content reuse and synchronisation; hreflang identifies alternative language or regional pages. They solve different problems. A Live Copy relationship is not sufficient evidence that the public language annotations are correct.

Adobe's [MSM overview](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/experience-manager-cloud-service/content/sites/administering/reusing-content/msm/overview), updated 22 October 2026, describes shared source content, Live Copies and rollout configurations. MSM does not translate content.

For a manufacturer selling in Australia and the US, shared specifications may belong in the source, while regional availability and enquiry routes need local control.

Set those rules explicitly. Adobe says rollout configurations determine which properties synchronise and when, so test metadata and links after the rollout as well as before it.

Use our [international SEO checklist](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/international-seo-checklist) too. For AEM, put the regional decisions into the implementation brief before developers configure inheritance, particularly where countries share a language but sell different products:

- Which regional pages should remain separately indexable?
- Which values come from the source, and which require a local override?
- Do canonicals identify the intended regional page rather than an internal language master?
- Do language alternatives point to published, relevant equivalents?
- What happens when a regional product is unavailable or a translation is unpublished?

Edge Delivery supports hreflang in sitemaps or page metadata, giving your team a choice of implementation that still needs checking against the published equivalents. Its sitemap guide also describes `primary-language-url` for equivalents whose paths don't share a suffix.

Searchmaxxed's Custom & Enterprise scope can include multiple markets, with regional publishing rules agreed before a shared change reaches every site in the estate.

## What should an enterprise team test before an AEM release?

Test the public page as a connected set of outputs: response, canonical, sitemap, regional alternatives and cached content. Keep the expected values together. That makes disagreements visible before separate teams each sign off their own field.

Here is a worked example for a **fictional B2B SaaS company** migrating Australian and US platform pages. Treat it as a proposed worksheet.

| Release check | Expected behaviour | Suggested owner |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Australian product page | Public AU URL serves the approved Australian page | Regional editor |
| US product page | Public US URL serves the approved US page | Regional editor |
| Canonical | Each separately indexable regional page identifies its approved public URL | SEO lead and component developer |
| Sitemap | Entries match those public URLs and exclude unpublished or noindex pages | AEM developer |
| Regional alternatives | AU and US annotations link the intended equivalent pages | SEO lead |
| Retired product URLs | Permanent redirects reach the relevant replacement without a loop | Platform engineer |
| Shared rollout | Local availability and enquiry details remain correct after synchronisation | Regional editor |
| Cached response | Published title, canonical and content appear on the public domain | Platform engineer |
| Measurement | Enquiry events still reach reporting after the release | Analytics owner |

Compare the outputs together. If the canonical retains `.html` but the sitemap removes it, the disagreement appears in the same review instead of separate tickets.

For each row, record the tested URL, expected value, observed value, owner and result, then repeat failed checks after the fix reaches production.

This applies Searchmaxxed's technical SEO scope to AEM. Your platform team's implementation knowledge still matters.

## Does Edge Delivery Services remove the need for SEO work?

Edge Delivery provides useful rendering and metadata defaults, but your content, configuration and production delivery still need review. Inspect the page's main content first. Then investigate a demonstrated fault rather than changing rendering because a generic checklist says so.

Adobe's [SEO and GEO guidance](https://www.aem.live/docs/seo-geo), checked 27 October 2026, says primary page content is included in the initial HTML. Headers and footers are normally fetched separately.

Adobe also reports a useful experiment. It included headers and footers server-side on aem.live from **14 November 2025 to 30 July 2026**, finding no measurable SEO upside.

That is Adobe's site-specific observation. It does not establish that every custom rendering choice works equally well elsewhere.

For your implementation, check that product explanations, specifications and important links remain available as intended. Profile heavy scripts, images and mobile layouts on representative pages.

Searchmaxxed includes Core Web Vitals and rendering checks in technical SEO. The aim is to fix a measurable constraint, then confirm that the page and enquiry path still work.

## Is Searchmaxxed right for an AEM SEO project?

Searchmaxxed fits teams that want technical fixes connected to the content and searches that bring enquiries. Our scope covers crawl, indexing, canonicals, sitemaps, redirects, rendering and schema. You get direct access to the people doing the work.

For a multi-market AEM estate, **Custom & Enterprise** can include dedicated engineering and custom reporting. Agree the AEM implementation responsibilities before choosing the scope.

**Growth System** and **Agentic Search Engineering** are the other managed plans, with the relevant choice depending on content production needs alongside platform work.

| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
| --- | --- |
| Your AEM estate has crawl, canonical, sitemap or hreflang problems across markets | You only need Adobe licence administration or infrastructure support |
| You want fixes connected to the content and searches that bring enquiries | Technical SEO has no route to changing the published pages |
| You want SEO and AI answers handled by one team | You need an Adobe-certified implementation partner |
| You want to own your site, repository, content and data | You want strategy advice with no changes to your site |

This is not an AEM case study or certification claim, and general technical SEO capability should not be mistaken for either during procurement. Verify those requirements before shortlisting us.

Likewise, a team seeking only Adobe licence administration or infrastructure support needs a different brief. Technical SEO must have a route to changing the published pages.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does AEM stand for in SEO?

AEM stands for Adobe Experience Manager. AEM SEO is the work that makes its published pages accessible, understandable and discoverable through search.

### Is AEM good for SEO?

AEM supports canonical URLs, sitemap generation, metadata and redirects. Implementation matters. Check the installed version, delivery model and rendered output rather than judging the platform by its feature list alone.

### Where do you change an AEM canonical URL?

In supported AEM Sites page properties, use **Canonical Url** under SEO. For Edge Delivery, use `canonical` metadata when overriding the generated URL. Verify the public HTML afterwards.

### Why is my AEM sitemap missing new pages?

Check publication status, sitemap roots, exclusions and generation configuration. For Sling-based background generation, inspect the scheduler; for Edge Delivery, inspect the active sitemap mode and index configuration.

### Does hiding an AEM page from navigation stop indexing?

Hiding a page from navigation controls its menu visibility, not its robots instruction. Check those separately. Adobe documents **Hide in Navigation** and **Robots Tags** as different properties.

### Can robots.txt remove an AEM page from search?

Blocking crawling alone does not remove a URL from search. Adobe's Edge Delivery checklist explains that crawlers must access a page to read its `noindex` instruction.

### Does Multi Site Manager translate content?

Multi Site Manager does not translate content. It maintains relationships between source content and Live Copies, with rollout rules controlling synchronisation.

## What is the next step for your AEM site?

Start with a representative product page and trace it through its template, public URL, canonical, sitemap, regional versions and cache. Bring the delivery model and engineering owner into that review.

We'll discuss the technical SEO work, the pages it should improve and the implementation scope your team needs.
