B2B ecommerce AI search starts with a public catalogue that explains exactly what you sell, while keeping negotiated prices and account terms private. Buyers' assistants need identifiable products, readable specifications and a clear purchasing route. Shopping feeds serve a narrower purpose. They describe offers a platform can display, with its own pricing, checkout and market requirements. A quote-only product can still deserve a strong search page without qualifying for a shopping listing.

I'm Brenden House, founder of Searchmaxxed. We do SEO, technical SEO, AI SEO, GEO and AEO, including the website work those services need.

## In summary

- Separate external AI discovery from the search engine inside your customer portal.
- Keep contract prices private. Make approved product facts accessible without an account.
- Treat product identity, pack size and compatibility as facts, not copywriting opportunities.
- Check shopping eligibility by platform and market before exporting your catalogue.
- Measure correct product recommendations and accepted enquiries, then follow them through to orders.

## Does B2B ecommerce AI search mean site search or getting found in ChatGPT?

B2B ecommerce AI search covers both, but they solve different problems. Site search helps existing visitors find products; external AI discovery helps buyers find your company before they arrive.

That distinction matters. A procurement assistant researching suppliers doesn't automatically have access to the search index, contracts or stock allocations inside your authenticated customer portal.

| Search setting | What the buyer needs | What the system needs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Public AI answer | A suitable supplier and evidence of product fit | Accessible pages with specific, supported product facts |
| AI shopping result | An identifiable product and a usable offer | Accepted product data, accurate terms and platform eligibility |
| Logged-in site search | Products available to that account | Catalogue access rules, contract pricing and account-specific availability |

Semantic search interprets meaning rather than relying only on matching words. Hybrid search combines meaning-based retrieval with keyword matching, useful when buyers mix descriptions and exact part numbers.

Personalisation belongs in the portal. Account entitlements are the rules defining which products, prices and terms a particular customer may access, regardless of how their search is phrased.

Searchmaxxed's [AI search optimisation service](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/services/ai-search-optimization) addresses public visibility through pages, technical fixes, matching structured data and measurement. An internal search engine is a separate implementation decision.

## Can your catalogue appear in AI answers if account pricing stays private?

Your public catalogue can support search discovery while negotiated prices remain behind authentication. Google's [AI search guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) requires indexed pages eligible for snippets. It doesn't require publishing every customer's commercial terms.

Separate the information by audience. A buyer can establish that you supply the right product without seeing another customer's discount, credit terms, order history or reserved stock allocation.

| Information | Public product page | Authenticated account |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Manufacturer, part number and approved specification | Show where disclosure is permitted | Same product facts |
| Datasheet and verified compatibility | Link or summarise approved information | Additional authorised documents if needed |
| Buying route and minimum pack size | Explain the standard conditions | Apply account-specific conditions |
| Negotiated price, credit limit and contract | Keep private | Show only to authorised users |
| Reserved inventory and customer order history | Keep private | Restrict to the relevant account |

Check more than the screen. Private prices must stay out of public HTML, structured data, downloadable exports and unauthenticated API responses, even when the visible page hides them.

Authentication does that job. A robots.txt instruction tells crawlers what to fetch; it isn't a lock on confidential data.

Google's [AI search guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) calls for accessible text and structured data that matches the page. Our technical SEO work applies that distinction: readable public facts, without presenting private account offers as public ones.

## Which product facts do buyers' assistants need?

A B2B product page should identify the exact item, explain its relevant specifications and distinguish technical suitability from purchasing availability. Keep the facts consistent across the page, datasheet and product records.

Start with identity. A SKU is your stock-keeping identifier; an MPN is the manufacturer's part number, and a GTIN is an assigned trade-item identifier.

They aren't interchangeable. OpenAI's [product feed specification](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/specs/file-upload/products) explicitly says not to invent an MPN to replace a missing GTIN.

For each product family, review:

- Manufacturer, full part number, seller SKU and assigned GTIN where available.
- Dimensions with units, material, connection type and relevant operating limits.
- Variant differences, pack contents and minimum order quantity.
- Verified compatibility, exclusions and links to supporting technical documents.
- Supply territory, availability wording and the route to order or request a quote.

Keep the qualifications attached. A performance limit copied without its operating conditions can misrepresent a product, even if the number itself matches the manufacturer's published technical datasheet.

### What does that look like for an industrial distributor?

Consider a hypothetical distributor selling industrial valves. Its product page names the valve family, but the connection type appears only in a PDF and the pack contents are missing entirely.

A buyer asks an assistant for a replacement compatible with an existing installation. The page gives it a category name, not enough evidence to establish a match.

The useful rewrite is specific. Put the approved connection designation and pack contents beside the product identity, then link the manufacturer's supporting document and explain what still needs technical confirmation.

Don't infer interchangeability from resemblance. A similar part number or product photograph isn't evidence that the replacement will work in the buyer's installation.

That is how our page and schema work applies here. We improve the public explanation; your product specialists supply and confirm the engineering facts before those claims go live.

## Which B2B products qualify for AI shopping features?

Shopping eligibility depends on the platform and the actual offer, not simply on whether a business sells physical products. Quote-only and account-restricted catalogues need different treatment from publicly purchasable stock.

Google separates [product snippets from merchant listings](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/product). Its [merchant listing requirements](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/merchant-listing) specify purchasable products and an active offer price greater than zero.

No placeholder prices. A fabricated offer doesn't turn an RFQ page into a product someone can purchase at that amount.

| Catalogue situation | Sensible search route | Shopping question to resolve |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Publicly purchasable standard product | Product page plus supported feed and markup | Do price, pack, stock and checkout agree? |
| Account-only negotiated offer | Public specification page and private ordering | Can the platform represent the actual offer legitimately? |
| Custom or quote-only product | Specification, application and RFQ pages | Is there a purchasable offer at all? |
| Restricted technical documentation | Approved public summary where permitted | What may be disclosed outside authorised accounts? |

### What does Google require of B2B Shopping advertisers?

Google's [B2B advertising guidance](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6323982?hl=en) says Shopping ads have no dedicated B2B experience. It requires individual buyers to be able to purchase, with business identification fields optional.

That can rule out a trade-only offer. Don't change your commercial model merely to make a feed pass; keep the public search and RFQ route useful instead.

Free account creation isn't automatically disqualifying. Google's [price requirements](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324371?hl=en) allow straightforward free signup, but require any user in the target country to obtain the submitted price.

Pack quantities matter too. Google's B2B guidance asks for the total price of the minimum number of items sold, rather than an unattainable single-item price.

A minimum order quantity and a minimum basket value are different: one sets the smallest purchasable quantity; the other sets the required total order value.

### What changes between Australia and the US?

Australia and the US have different Google feed tax requirements, while OpenAI's standard product upload currently defaults to the US. Configure each market as its own offer.

| Destination | Documented requirement | Implication for a B2B catalogue |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Google, Australia | Submitted price includes applicable GST | Check feed and landing-page tax treatment together |
| Google, United States | Submitted price excludes sales tax | Don't copy Australian tax treatment into US offers |
| OpenAI standard file upload | Currently targets the US | An Australian URL or currency doesn't select Australia |
| OpenAI additional markets | Integration and countries need confirmation | Confirm market access before preparing an Australian rollout |

OpenAI's documentation is unusually clear here. Its market columns do not override the standard US default, and additional countries require confirmation for the specific integration.

Our [AI shopping product feeds guide](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/ai-shopping-product-feeds) covers the platform formats in detail. For this catalogue decision, the important distinction is whether an offer is eligible, not whether somebody can export a spreadsheet.

## Does product schema make a B2B catalogue ready for AI search?

Product schema helps describe a product, but it cannot repair inaccessible pages, incorrect specifications or unsupported offers. Page and structured data must agree.

Keep the jobs separate. A product page explains the item; schema labels its facts, while a feed submits product records through a platform's supported data route.

Google says existing SEO fundamentals still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special AI schema required.

For a large catalogue, the technical work includes:

1. Making important product and category pages reachable through ordinary internal links.
2. Checking crawl access, indexability and the rendered product information without logging in.
3. Keeping variant URLs and canonical tags consistent with the products they represent.
4. Controlling filter combinations so useful categories aren't buried among repetitive URLs.
5. Maintaining XML sitemaps, mobile performance and working ordering or enquiry paths.

Search access also needs checking. [OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot separately from GPTBot](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots), so allowing search crawling doesn't require allowing its model-training crawler.

A product information management system, or PIM, holds catalogue facts. An enterprise resource planning system, or ERP, often supplies operational data such as inventory and account terms.

Agree which system owns each field. Otherwise, a corrected product page can be overwritten by the next import, leaving the same mistake in a tidier template.

Our [industrial distributor SEO guide](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/seo-for-industrial-distributors) covers the broader category and part-number search strategy. Here, the priority is preserving the exact product meaning as those facts move between systems.

## How do you test a catalogue without exposing account data?

Test the same product as an anonymous visitor, authorised customers and an exported feed record. The product identity should stay consistent while private terms remain restricted to the correct account.

Use the hypothetical valve distributor again. Its public page should describe the valve correctly, but two customers may have different prices and different permissions to order it.

This acceptance checklist isn't a claimed client result, so run it on representative products before applying a template change across the catalogue.

| Test | Pass condition | Failure to fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Anonymous browser and page source | Approved specifications; no contract information | Private price hidden visually but present in HTML |
| Account A | A's authorised products and terms | Another customer's discount or allocated stock |
| Account B | B's authorised products and terms | Cached content from Account A |
| Public structured data | Same item and public facts as the page | Private price or invented public offer |
| Feed export | Supported offer, exact variant and correct market | Wrong pack, territory, stock or tax treatment |
| Buyer question | Correct product with supported reasons for suitability | Unsupported compatibility or an obsolete part |

Then test the handover. Does the assistant's link reach that exact product, preserve the chosen variant and take the buyer to a working order or quote route?

A relevant answer can still lose the enquiry there. Returning the buyer to an empty search box makes them do the product selection all over again.

For Searchmaxxed, this turns catalogue SEO into checkable website work. Public pages, structured data and enquiry paths can be reviewed against the same approved product record.

## How should you measure B2B ecommerce SEO and AI search?

Measure accepted enquiries and orders by product family, alongside search visibility and the accuracy of AI recommendations. A product mention alone doesn't show whether the buyer found a usable offer.

Keep the records separate. Google rankings, an AI citation, a product-card appearance and an accepted RFQ describe different events, even when they concern the same product.

An RFQ is a request for quotation. Record the requested part, quantity and destination so sales can distinguish a suitable enquiry from someone asking for a product you cannot supply.

Follow the commercial result. Compare public product-page visits with accepted RFQs and completed orders, while recording which category or product pages changed during the period.

For AI answers, check product accuracy too. Record whether the response named the right manufacturer, variant and purchasing conditions, rather than counting every mention as a useful recommendation.

Searchmaxxed connects Search Console and GA4 checks with conversion and sales feedback. Our monthly decision memo uses that evidence to judge the work, not just the visibility chart.

## Is Searchmaxxed right for your B2B ecommerce business?

Searchmaxxed fits manufacturers and distributors that need public catalogue pages, technical SEO and AI search work implemented together. It isn't a substitute for your product engineering authority or procurement platform.

| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
| --- | --- |
| You need public catalogue pages, technical SEO and AI search work implemented together | You want strategy advice with no changes to your site |
| Your product specialists can confirm specifications and compatibility | You need an SEO agency to certify engineering suitability |
| You need buyers to find your public products and enquiry routes | Your only problem is search relevance inside a private portal |

You keep the assets. Our managed work includes client ownership of the website, repository, content and data, with direct access to the people doing the work.

| Plan | Published scope | Where it fits this problem |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Growth System | 30 page releases monthly, plus technical SEO, schema and internal links | Improving priority public catalogue pages and their search foundations |
| Agentic Search Engineering | 50 page releases monthly, comparison and industry page families, AI answer tracking | Broader product applications and supplier-selection searches |
| Custom & Enterprise | Can include multiple markets, dedicated engineering and custom reporting | Catalogues needing market-specific work and agreed engineering scope |

A page release is an approved new page or substantial rebuild, and technical, schema and internal-link work does not reduce those page commitments.

Brenden sets the direction on every account. He reads the weekly evidence, writes the money pages and approves what ships.

If your only problem is relevance inside a private portal, start with the search-platform owner. If specifications are unverified, your product team must settle them before we publish technical claims.

Those boundaries keep the work useful. We can improve how buyers find and understand your catalogue without pretending an SEO engagement replaces the systems that govern their purchases.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is SEO for B2B ecommerce?

B2B ecommerce SEO helps business buyers find a supplier's products through search. It combines useful catalogue pages, crawlable site structure, technical fixes and a clear route to order or request a quote.

### Do we need to make negotiated prices public?

No. Keep negotiated terms authenticated, while publishing approved product facts and explaining how a buyer can order or request pricing.

### Can quote-only products appear in AI answers?

Quote-only product pages can support AI research answers when accessible and useful. That is separate from merchant listings requiring a purchasable offer and valid pricing data.

### Will submitting a feed put our products in ChatGPT?

Submission alone doesn't establish selection. OpenAI says product relevance depends on the question and context, and its [shopping documentation](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search) describes multiple product-data sources.

### Does an Australian currency make an OpenAI upload Australian?

No. OpenAI's standard file upload currently targets the US, and its documentation says currency or product URL does not select another market.

### Can an AI assistant approve a technical replacement?

Treat an assistant's suggestion as a candidate, not engineering approval. Compatibility needs the manufacturer's supported specifications and your normal technical review, especially where an incorrect substitution could affect safety or operations.

### Does Searchmaxxed replace our ERP or internal search platform?

No. Searchmaxxed's relevant scope is SEO, AI search, website implementation and measurement; dedicated engineering needs an agreed scope rather than an assumed platform replacement.

## Where should your catalogue work start?

Start with a product family your buyers already need, then check whether they can identify the right item without exposing private commercial terms.

Bring product records and the ordering route. Searchmaxxed can assess the public pages, search gaps and technical work, then recommend the scope that fits your business.
