## Key takeaways

ChatGPT recommends the products it can read, trust and match to the request, and in the US that now means products in a feed.

- Get your catalogue into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, Etsy, a direct feed or a supported provider such as Salesforce or Stripe.
- Put the facts shoppers filter on into the first 40 words of every product description.
- Send each variant as its own row.
- Refresh price and stock daily.
- Earn reviews and coverage, since ChatGPT builds its labels and summaries from the wider web.

Selling software or quote-only products? Then the written answer matters more. Start with your ten best buying questions, and see who ChatGPT recommends today.

ChatGPT shopping is the row of product cards ChatGPT shows when you ask it what to buy. Each card carries a photo, a price, a review summary and a link to the store where you can buy it. In the US, most of those products now come from feeds that merchants send to OpenAI, and ChatGPT picks whichever fits the request best. Then it weighs price, reviews and stock.

Nobody can buy a slot, because OpenAI says product results aren't ads. The sellers who win have complete feeds, descriptions written in shoppers' own words, and plenty of other sites that speak well of them.

We're Searchmaxxed, an SEO and AI SEO agency. Getting products and companies recommended in ChatGPT is the work we do for high-value firms and [enterprises](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/services/enterprise-seo). We make your company the answer in Google and in the AI engines your buyers ask: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews. Then we turn those answers into a steady flow of high-intent leads and pipeline.

## What is ChatGPT shopping?

ChatGPT shopping is the part of ChatGPT that finds, compares and links to products whenever a question shows the person wants to buy. Ask for "a ceramic housewarming gift under $100" and you get product cards and a short buyer's guide instead of ten blue links.

It now covers four things:

- **Product results:** a carousel of cards with images, prices, review summaries and labels like "Budget-friendly", as [OpenAI's shopping help page](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search) describes.
- **Comparisons:** side-by-side tables of price, reviews and features.
- **Shopping research:** a guided buyer's guide, which OpenAI [launched on 24 November 2025](https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-shopping-research/). A version of GPT-5 mini trained for shopping runs it, reading product pages directly and citing sources.
- **Try on and saved products:** a "Try on" button for clothes and accessories, plus a Library for favourites.

OpenAI's [merchant page](https://chatgpt.com/merchants/) says ChatGPT handles discovery and comparison, and the purchase happens on your own site or app.

So ChatGPT is where the shortlist forms. Often that happens before a shopper opens a single store tab, which means the store that misses the shortlist never even gets the visit.

## What changed in ChatGPT shopping in 2026?

Two big shifts. OpenAI dropped in-chat checkout to focus on discovery, and product feeds took over as the main source of the products ChatGPT shows.

| Date | What changed | What it means for sellers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 29 Sep 2025 | Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol launch | US shoppers can buy from Etsy sellers in chat |
| 24 Nov 2025 | Shopping research launches | Long buyer's guides that read product pages |
| 9 Feb 2026 | Ad testing starts in the US | Paid ads appear, kept apart from product results |
| 24 Mar 2026 | Discovery revamp; Instant Checkout scaled back | Shoppers buy on your site; feeds become the way in |
| 10 Jul 2026 | Feed-sourced picks jump from 8.26% to 61.54% | Sites relying on crawled pages lose visibility |
| 3 Sep 2026 | Feeds reach about 65% of tracked picks | Brands without a feed miss most recommendations |
| Oct 2026 | US runs on OpenAI's own feed index; Europe still uses Google Shopping | Your market decides which data counts |

The dates come from OpenAI's own posts on [Instant Checkout](https://openai.com/index/buy-it-in-chatgpt/), [shopping research](https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-shopping-research/) and [product discovery](https://openai.com/index/powering-product-discovery-in-chatgpt/), and from its [help page on ads in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/articles/20001047). The July and September figures come from Profound's prompt tracking, which [Search Engine Journal reported](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/chatgpt-shopping-results-lean-hard-on-product-feeds/589000/) on 9 September 2026. The October split comes from [Peec AI's retrieval research](https://peec.ai/blog/chatgpt-shopping-optimization-in-2026-us-vs.-europe), published 16 October 2026.

The July shift hurt. Of the 687 Profound customers in that sample, 450 saw their shopping visibility fall by at least a third around 10 July. Only 67 gained by that much.

The seller's question has changed with it. It used to be whether ChatGPT could find your product pages, and now it's whether your catalogue sits in the feed ChatGPT reads. And whether it speaks shoppers' language.

## How does ChatGPT choose which products to show?

ChatGPT makes two choices: which products fit the request, then which merchants to list for each one. For the first, OpenAI says it weighs the shopper's question and context, structured product data from merchants and providers, and its own safety rules.

Here's the path, step by step.

| Step | What ChatGPT does | What you control |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Reads the request | Weighs budget, needs, Memory and custom instructions | Product copy in the words shoppers use |
| 2. Pulls candidates | Draws on structured product data from feeds and providers | Being in a feed, with every variant |
| 3. Scores relevance | Matches text and product codes such as GTINs | Titles, the first 40 words, identifiers |
| 4. Filters | Applies OpenAI's product policies, plus a seller check | A policy-safe catalogue and verified seller status |
| 5. Shows the cards | Adds labels and review summaries from web data | Reviews and coverage on other sites |
| 6. Lists merchants | Ranks sellers on availability, price, quality and source | Stock, price and being the maker |

[OpenAI documents](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search) steps 1, 2, 5 and 6. Peec AI, which studied ChatGPT's own retrieval data, found the scoring methods and the seller check. In one running-shoe test, ChatGPT pulled 41 candidate products, built detailed records for 32 of them and showed the shopper just 5.

Two of Peec's findings stand out:

- **Descriptions get cut at 50 tokens.** That's roughly the first 40 words, and nothing after it reaches the scoring step.
- **Unverified sellers drop out.** One shop held 25 of the 32 candidates and placed zero products, because it lacked a verified-seller flag.

The advice text works differently. ChatGPT searches the web to write it, and in Peec's shoe test it found 42 candidate sources and used one. Ordinary answers show the same squeeze. Our own panel measured it:

We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.

So your product can win a card while a competitor's review page writes the advice right above it, steering the shopper elsewhere. You want both.

## How does ChatGPT rank merchants for the same product?

When several stores sell one item, ChatGPT ranks them on availability, price, quality and whether the store makes it or acts as its primary seller. That list is OpenAI's. The first card's price usually comes from the first merchant listed, though the cheapest offer ChatGPT knows of can earn a "Best price" label.

Feeds changed this too. In September, ecommerce analyst Juozas Kaziukėnas found every product in recent responses came from a feed, with no Google Shopping data. [Shopifreaks reported it](https://www.shopifreaks.com/chatgpt-now-draws-its-shopping-results-only-from-brand-submitted-product-feeds-dropping-the-google-shopping-data-it-once-used/) on 3 September. ChatGPT stopped listing several retailers at different prices and showed only the store that supplied the feed.

Good news for brands.

If you make the product and send the feed, you're the seller ChatGPT is most likely to show. If a reseller sends a feed and you don't, that reseller can take both the card and the customer who clicks it.

## Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?

No. OpenAI says product results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships". Ads sit apart, labelled, below a response.

OpenAI began testing ads in the US on 9 February 2026 for Free and Go users, and Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts see none. It also says advertisers "have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses". Our guide to [ChatGPT ads for B2B marketers](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/chatgpt-ads) covers costs, targeting and eligibility.

An ad buys a labelled slot. The recommendation inside the answer is the part you have to earn.

## How do you get products into ChatGPT shopping?

Get into a feed ChatGPT reads. OpenAI offers four routes, and the right one depends on where your store already runs and who manages your product data.

| Route | Who it fits | What you do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shopify Catalog | Shopify merchants | Nothing: OpenAI says Shopify catalogues are already integrated |
| Etsy | Etsy sellers | Nothing: Etsy catalogues are already integrated |
| Direct feed | Large retailers and brands | Apply at chatgpt.com/merchants, then upload over SFTP |
| Feed provider | Brands on Salesforce, Stripe or a feed tool | Connect through the provider you already use |

Only approved partners can use the direct route for now, and OpenAI keeps a waitlist for brands that have already applied. Its [getting-started guide](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/guides/get-started) recommends a full catalogue snapshot at least once a day. The [feed reference](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/specs/file-upload/products) lists nine required fields for every item or variant: `item_id`, `title`, `description`, `url`, `brand`, `seller_name`, `image_url`, `availability` and `price`.

Some products can't go in at all. OpenAI's prohibited list covers adult content, alcohol, nicotine, gambling, weapons and prescription-only medicines.

Can you skip the feed? OpenAI says you don't need one if ChatGPT already crawls your site, though a feed gives you more control. That control now decides who shows up. For the field-by-field build, and how Google Merchant Center and Perplexity compare, see our guide to [AI shopping product feeds](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/ai-shopping-product-feeds).

## What can sellers do to get products recommended in ChatGPT?

Seven levers move ChatGPT product recommendations. The first three matter most, and each one traces back to OpenAI's own documents or to published tests of how ChatGPT retrieves products.

### 1. Be in a feed

By September, most of the picks Profound tracked came from feeds. Shopify and Etsy sellers already have one. Everyone else needs a direct feed or a provider, so apply early, because onboarding runs on a waitlist.

### 2. Front-load the first 40 words

Peec found ChatGPT cuts each description at 50 tokens before scoring it, so lead with material, size, use, compatibility and pack size. Brand story goes last.

**A worked example.** Picture a glove brand called Northline, the made-up brand OpenAI uses in its own feed examples.

- **Before:** "Welcome to the Northline family! Since 1987, our team has set the standard for comfort and quality across many industries. Our gloves are trusted by professionals who..."
- **After:** "Powder-free 6-mil nitrile disposable gloves, latex-free, for food handling, mechanics and cleaning. Textured fingertips grip when wet. Box of 100, sizes S to XXL. Meets FDA food-contact rules."

Version one is all brand. A shopper filtering for anything learns nothing. The second answers "latex-free gloves for food prep" well before the cut-off, so it can match that question. Only claim a standard your product meets.

### 3. Send every variant as its own row

Give each size, colour and model its own `item_id`, all sharing one `group_id`, as OpenAI's spec asks. Peec found each model and colour can take its own slot. In its shoe test, one retailer placed four of its five candidates in the final five.

### 4. Keep price and stock fresh

Upload a full snapshot at least daily. Push updates more often when prices move, because OpenAI admits price changes can take a while to reach ChatGPT. A stale price kills trust at checkout.

### 5. Be the maker in the feed

ChatGPT favours the maker or primary seller when it lists merchants. Send your own feed, with your brand in `brand` and `seller_name`, so no reseller stands in for you.

### 6. Earn reviews and coverage on other sites

ChatGPT writes review summaries from public reviews. Its labels, like "Most popular", draw on information that can include third-party data, and the advice around the carousel comes from articles on the web. Reviews, comparison articles and press all shape how ChatGPT describes your product.

### 7. Let OpenAI's crawlers in

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. [OpenAI's crawler page](https://platform.openai.com/docs/bots) says that setting controls whether your pages appear in ChatGPT search. Shopping research reads product pages directly too, so check that your firewall or CDN isn't blocking OpenAI's traffic.

Ask about the verified-seller flag on your OpenAI onboarding call. Its rules aren't public, and without it your products can vanish.

## Does ChatGPT shopping work for B2B sellers?

Partly. The carousel suits B2B products with a public price, stock level and image, like tools or safety gear, and fits quote-only equipment and software poorly. The reason: OpenAI's feed needs a price and availability on every row.

That shapes the pricing call. If a public price helps buyers choose, as with standard catalogue items, publish it and put it in the feed. If the real price depends on volume, configuration or contract terms, don't force a number. Make quotes easy to request. Then win the written answer instead. Our guide to [AI search for B2B ecommerce](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/ai-search-for-b2b-ecommerce) covers catalogues with account pricing.

For B2B SaaS and cybersecurity, "ChatGPT product recommendations" means the vendors ChatGPT names in its written answer. Those names decide deals. In [G2's 2026 survey](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/new-g2-research-half-of-b2b-software-buyers-now-start-their-research-with-ai-chatbots-302742807.html) of 1,076 B2B software buyers, AI chatbots were the top source shaping vendor shortlists. And 69% chose a different vendor than planned because of a chatbot.

ChatGPT's answers lean on a few trusted pages. Our own panel found it:

Across 900 ChatGPT answers about Australian agencies, a single third-party "best agencies" site was cited in 168 of them. The next three were a second listicle, Semrush's agency directory and Clutch. If you want to be recommended, the job is getting onto the handful of pages the model already trusts.

Software vendors win with SEO and AEO. Build answer-first pages for every buyer question, plus comparison and fit pages, then earn a place on the review sites and lists ChatGPT cites. Our guide on [how to rank in ChatGPT](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/how-to-rank-in-chatgpt) walks through each step.

## Does ChatGPT shopping work outside the US?

OpenAI says shopping is live for US users and will reach more regions over time. Elsewhere, the data differs. In October 2026, Peec AI found European sessions still pull products from Google Shopping, without a seller check or OpenAI's own relevance scoring.

So in Europe, for now, your Google Merchant Center listings do the work. Peec expects OpenAI to move other regions onto its own index, and when it does, a feed becomes the way in there as well. Selling in Australia or elsewhere? Test in your own market first.

## How do you measure ChatGPT shopping traffic and sales?

Tag your feed links and watch the AI channel in GA4. Then rerun your buying questions each month, so you track real demand rather than one lucky screenshot.

- **Tag feed URLs.** OpenAI's [best-practice guide](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/guides/best-practices) suggests adding `utm_medium=feed` to product URLs, so feed clicks stand apart in analytics.
- **Use the GA4 AI Assistant channel.** Since 13 May 2026, [GA4 groups chatbot visits](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9164320?hl=en) from ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude into their own channel.
- **Test prompts from the right place.** Peec found ChatGPT personalises results by location and past clicks. Run each buying question three times from a US session, and log the products and merchants that appear.
- **Tie it to revenue.** Follow sessions through to orders or CRM deals, so you can see which questions pay.

Before you report any of it, check the traffic is human. We found this on a client account:

A client's GA4 showed AI-assistant visits jump from 354 to 6,050 in a month. Almost none of it was real. About 5,700 came in three one-hour bursts: same 1920x1080 desktop Chrome, all new users, no referrer, about 20 seconds each, landing on two pages. Real AI traffic was 385 sessions against 354 the month before, roughly flat.

Shoppers don't arrive in tight hourly bursts from one screen size, so filter that pattern out before the numbers reach a board report.

## Is Searchmaxxed right for you?

We're a strong fit for high-value firms and enterprises that want ChatGPT to recommend them by name. That might be your products in the carousel or your company in the written shortlist. Either way, it should show in revenue.

Here's what you get. We go after the buying questions your customers ask in ChatGPT and Google. We fix the product pages, structured data and technical problems that keep you out of the answers. Then we put your name on the review sites, lists and articles those answers trust.

We track which searches and AI answers turn into revenue for clients, for example through their CRM, as well as enquiries in GA4. You talk to the people doing the work, with no account manager in between. You own your site, content and data. The full scope sits on our [AI search optimisation service](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/services/ai-search-optimization) page.

One client came to us with a website that wasn't working. Three months later he was on page one for one of the most competitive searches in his industry. Now he has more high-intent leads than he can handle, and we're building the systems to handle them.

The bigger picture:

Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than $15 million in revenue through search for its clients.

"I can't believe this worked." That's what we hear. Clients tell us they finally found a growth partner in search that keeps its word and gets things done.

We're the wrong call in four cases:

- **You run a small Shopify store.** Shopify already sends your catalogue to ChatGPT. Rewrite the first 40 words of each description and gather reviews yourself.
- **You need sales this month to survive.** Feeds, reviews and coverage take months to pay off.
- **You only want ChatGPT ads.** Book those through OpenAI's Ads Manager.
- **You want OpenAI merchant approval arranged for you.** That application sits with you or your commerce platform.

For the wider plan across every engine, read our guide on [how to show up in AI search](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/how-to-show-up-in-ai-search). ## Frequently asked questions

### Is ChatGPT shopping free?

Yes, for shoppers. OpenAI rolled its March 2026 shopping update out to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users. For merchants, OpenAI says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT, and shoppers complete them on your own site or app.

### Can ChatGPT buy things for you?

Mostly no. In March 2026 OpenAI stepped back from Instant Checkout, its in-chat purchase feature, and now sends shoppers to merchant sites to buy. Some retailers, such as Walmart, run their own ChatGPT apps with account linking and payments.

### How do you use ChatGPT shopping research?

Ask ChatGPT a detailed buying question, such as "a quiet robot vacuum for pet hair under $400". It suggests shopping research, or you can pick it from the (+) menu. It asks about budget and needs, then reads product pages and writes a buyer's guide with sources.

### Why aren't my products showing in ChatGPT?

The usual causes are no feed, missing required fields, weak descriptions or stale price and stock data. Prohibited categories never show, and Peec AI found unverified sellers drop out entirely. Confirm your catalogue reaches ChatGPT through Shopify, Etsy, a provider or a direct feed. Then retest from a US session.

### Does ChatGPT shopping use Google Shopping?

Not in the US any more. Analyst Juozas Kaziukėnas and Peec AI both found US results now come from feeds that merchants send to OpenAI. In Europe, Peec found ChatGPT still pulled products from Google Shopping as of October 2026.

### Does product schema help ChatGPT shopping?

It can, but the feed matters more for the carousel. Schema helps ChatGPT read your product pages, which shopping research visits directly. Brodie Clark spotted ChatGPT taking some product titles from page title tags in September 2025, so keep your titles, schema and feed in agreement.
