Reddit SEO is getting your company named, accurately and in good standing, in the Reddit threads that Google ranks and AI answers read. Why does it show up so often? Three reasons. Google sends it enormous traffic. Google and OpenAI license its data. And it's packed with first-hand opinion from people who actually use the products being discussed. One thing changed in August 2026: ChatGPT almost stopped citing Reddit, though it still reads it. So Reddit matters most for "X vs Y" and "is it worth it" searches, where buyers want an unpaid opinion before they commit. It matters far less for shortlist questions.

I'm Brenden House. I run Searchmaxxed, an SEO and AI SEO agency for B2B and enterprise companies, and Reddit engagement is part of our managed packages. Sources: public data read on 27 October 2026 (AEST), and our own panels.

## In summary

Reddit ranks because Google rewards first-hand discussion and sends Reddit most of its visits, but AI engines now treat Reddit unevenly.

- Google organic search brought 57.04% of reddit.com's traffic in September 2026, Semrush estimates. That's why threads sit above your pages.
- Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% to 0.5% in mid-August 2026. Yet roughly one in four pages ChatGPT consulted that month was still a Reddit thread, according to one tracker.
- In our own ChatGPT panel of agency-buyer questions, the most-cited sources were listicles and review directories. Reddit wasn't in the top four.
- Reddit pays off for comparison, alternatives and "has anyone used this" searches. Treat it as one source among several, not a shortcut into ChatGPT.
- Do it as a named, disclosed contributor. Reddit's spam policy and each subreddit's moderators remove the rest, often in public.

## What is Reddit SEO?

Reddit SEO means being present, by name and in good standing, in the Reddit discussions that rank in Google and feed AI answers. It isn't about ranking your own subreddit. It's about the threads your buyers already read, and what those threads say about you when you're not in the room.

People use the term two ways. Some mean posting on Reddit so the post itself ranks in Google. Others mean earning mentions in existing threads. For a B2B company the second matters more, because those threads already carry the traffic, the trust and the attention of people comparing vendors.

A few terms first, in one line each:

- **Subreddit:** a community on Reddit about one topic, such as r/SaaS or r/sysadmin, with its own rules and moderators.
- **Moderator:** a volunteer who enforces a subreddit's rules and can remove posts or ban accounts.
- **Karma:** points an account earns when others upvote its posts and comments; many subreddits restrict low-karma accounts.
- **Discussions and forums:** a Google results feature that shows forum threads, Reddit's included, for searches where first-hand opinion helps.
- **Citation:** a link an AI answer shows as one of its sources.

How does that compare with SEO on your own site, where you control the page, the copy and the outcome?

| | SEO on your own site | Reddit SEO |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What you control | The page, the copy, the schema | Only what you post; the thread belongs to the community |
| What wins | Pages that answer the search best | Useful, honest replies that others upvote |
| Links | Links from other sites pass authority | Reddit links are nofollow, so they pass little or none |
| Main payoff | Rankings, enquiries and pipeline | Mentions in threads that rank, and in what AI engines read |
| Biggest risk | Slow results | A removed post, a ban or a screenshot of your mistake |

It adds to your own SEO. It doesn't replace it. When we run Reddit work for a client, it comes inside a package that also builds the pages those threads end up pointing to.

## Why does Reddit show up in so many Google searches?

Reddit shows up because Google sends it most of its visits and actively surfaces forum discussion. Google also pays for Reddit's data. The thread above your page usually got there on Google's terms, not Reddit's.

Look at the scale first. Semrush data published by Business Insider in April 2024 showed visits rising from 132 million in August 2023 to a projected 346 million that April. Ahrefs put Reddit's global organic traffic at 160 million in August 2023 and 420 million by February 2024, Entrepreneur reported. By September 2026, Semrush estimated that Google organic search sent 57.04% of reddit.com's traffic.

Three things sit behind that climb:

1. **Google shows forum discussion on purpose.** Its Discussions and forums feature puts threads straight into the results, often near the top of the page. Google's documentation says forum markup helps it "better identify online discussions across the web".
2. **People ask for it.** Google's own announcement of its expanded Reddit partnership (22 February 2024) says "people increasingly use Google to search for helpful content on Reddit". Searchers add "reddit" to the end of queries because they want an unpaid opinion.
3. **Google pays for the data.** The deal gave Google Reddit's Data API. Reuters reported the contract was worth about US$60 million a year, citing one source. OpenAI announced its own Reddit partnership, with Data API access, in May 2024.

That deal didn't buy Reddit rankings. Google wrote that it "does not change Google's use of publicly available, crawlable content for indexing, training, or display in Google products". Threads rank because they answer the search.

For a B2B company, that matters. A thread asking "has anyone actually used [your product] at scale?" answers a question your own pages can't answer credibly. Nobody trusts a vendor's verdict on itself. That's the gap Reddit fills.

## Is Reddit growing or declining in 2026?

Reddit is still growing in users, but its Google traffic got bumpier in 2026. It reported 130.3 million daily active uniques for the second quarter of 2026, up 18% on a year earlier. Weekly active uniques reached 514.6 million.

The search side is less steady. Reporting on the Q2 2026 results, TechTimes noted CEO Steve Huffman called search referral traffic "choppy". On AI Overviews, he said Reddit had "still yet to find that win-win" with Google. Their data deal is up for renewal.

What does that mean for you? Reddit isn't going anywhere, and its threads will keep ranking for the comparison and experience searches your buyers run. But when Google answers a question inside an AI Overview, fewer people click through to the thread. Your name needs to be in the answer.

## Do AI answers still use Reddit after the August 2026 ChatGPT change?

Yes, but unevenly. ChatGPT still reads Reddit threads, yet it rarely shows them as sources. Google's AI features cite it slightly less. Perplexity shows no clear drop, and Reddit was roughly a quarter of its citations as of January.

| Engine | What changed in 2026 | Source and date |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | Reddit's share of citations fell from 3.8% (18 July to 7 August) to 0.5% (14 to 17 August), an 86% drop | Promptwatch, reported by Semrush, 26 Aug 2026 |
| ChatGPT | Roughly one in four pages it consulted was still a Reddit thread, 25% to 34% on each day from 13 to 20 August | Trackerly, 20 Aug 2026 |
| Google AI Overviews | Reddit's citation share fell about 11% over the same period | Axios, reported by Semrush, 26 Aug 2026 |
| Google AI Mode | Reddit's citation share fell about 31% | Axios, reported by Semrush, 26 Aug 2026 |
| Perplexity | No clear drop; Reddit was roughly a quarter of its citations as of January | Trackerly, 20 Aug 2026 |

Promptwatch calls its figure provisional. OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it doesn't set fixed visibility for individual sites, and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.

The key idea is retrieved versus cited. A retrieved page is one the AI read while writing the answer, whether or not you ever see it. A cited page is one it shows you as a source. Our own testing found the same gap:

> We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.

So a Reddit thread can shape what ChatGPT says about your category without being linked. If that thread calls your product clunky, the answer may echo it, citation or not.

This has happened before. Semrush tracked ChatGPT's Reddit citations falling from about 60% of responses in early August 2025 to roughly 10% by mid-September. Kevin Indig tied that drop to Google removing its num=100 search parameter. Citations recovered within months. Nobody knows yet whether this one will, and I wouldn't plan a quarter around either outcome.

So where did the citations go? Trackerly reports they moved toward official documentation, help centres, regulators and brand-owned pages. That's the strongest argument in this whole article for fixing your own site before you post anywhere.

## Which of your searches does Reddit actually affect?

Reddit matters for searches where buyers want an unpaid opinion. It matters much less for "best provider" shortlists, where AI answers lean on listicles and review directories.

Our own panels show this. We asked AI engines who to hire for agency work, which is exactly the kind of shortlist question a B2B buyer asks:

> Across 900 ChatGPT answers about Australian agencies, a single third-party "best agencies" site was cited in 168 of them. The next three were a second listicle, Semrush's agency directory and Clutch. If you want to be recommended, the job is getting onto the handful of pages the model already trusts.

Notice what isn't in that top four. Reddit. Perplexity showed the same pattern:

> Perplexity cited a review directory (Semrush Agencies, Clutch, DesignRush and the like) in 36 of 44 agency answers. ChatGPT did it in 20 and Claude in 15. One agency's Clutch profile had six reviews and was cited 20 times.

Here's how I'd sort them. This is my judgement from that testing and from reading the results, not a measured rule.

| Search type | Example | Where the answer usually comes from | Does Reddit matter? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Shortlist | "best ERP for mid-size manufacturers" | Listicles, review directories, comparison pages | Some, behind lists and reviews |
| Comparison | "[your product] vs [competitor]" | Comparison pages, Reddit threads, review sites | Yes, a lot |
| Alternatives | "[competitor] alternatives" | Listicles, Reddit threads, vendor pages | Yes |
| Experience | "is [your product] worth it" or "anyone used [your product]" | Reddit threads and forums | Most of all |
| Technical how-to | "how to integrate X with Salesforce" | Docs, help centres, Reddit and Stack Overflow | Yes, beside your docs |
| Procurement or compliance | "IRAP assessed cloud providers" | Official and government pages | Rarely |

The pattern is simple. The closer a search gets to "what's it really like to use?", the more Reddit counts.

### How do you check your own Reddit exposure in 30 minutes?

1. List 20 questions prospects raise on calls. Use real call notes rather than your keyword list, because prospects phrase things differently from your SEO tool.
2. Search each one in Google. Then add "reddit" and search again.
3. Note every Reddit thread on page one, what it says about you, and who it recommends.
4. Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode. Record who gets named.
5. Mark each thread as positive, negative, wrong or silent about you.
6. Set up Reddit Pro, Reddit's free business tool, to track mentions of your brand and competitors.

What you're after is a short list of the five to ten threads that really shape your category's buying decisions this year. That list is where Reddit work starts. It's also the first thing we build when Reddit engagement starts for a client.

## How do you do Reddit SEO without getting banned?

Post as a named, disclosed person who answers questions properly, and follow each subreddit's rules before anything else. Reddit bans spam outright, and moderators remove promotional posts quickly and in public.

Reddit's own rules are short. Rule 2 says: "Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam." Its spam policy goes further. It lists "Using tools (e.g., bots, generative AI tools) that may break Reddit or facilitate the proliferation of spam" as a violation. Fake subscriber accounts count too.

The same policy speaks straight to brands. If your posts "consist primarily of links to a business that you run, own, or otherwise benefit from," Reddit asks you to post less often. Or, it suggests, buy ads.

Two rules of thumb come up often:

- **The 90-9-1 rule** says that in most online communities about 90% of people only read, 9% contribute now and then, and 1% create most posts. It's an observation, not a Reddit policy. It's why one useful reply reaches far more people than it seems.
- **The 9:1 rule** came from a 2014 Reddit admin post asking for nine non-promotional posts for every promotional one. Reddit's current spam policy names no ratio, but many subreddits set stricter rules of their own and enforce them hard.

Here's what works, in order:

1. **Fix your own pages first.** Threads link to your docs, pricing and comparison pages, and ChatGPT now favours first-party sources. Weak pages waste the mention.
2. **Use named people.** A product manager or engineer with a real history beats a brand account. Say who you work for, every time.
3. **Answer the question asked.** Give specifics, admit where a competitor is the better fit, and skip the link unless someone wants it.
4. **Read each subreddit's rules.** Some ban vendors outright, while others allow them only in a weekly thread set aside for self-promotion.
5. **Never buy upvotes or use sock-puppet accounts.** Moderators and other users spot them, and the screenshot outlives the campaign.
6. **Be careful with a branded subreddit.** It suits support and product communities with real users, but it rarely ranks for buying searches.
7. **Treat Reddit Ads as separate.** Ads reach people on Reddit, yet they don't create the organic threads that Google ranks and AI engines read.

Public-sector teams need one extra step. Check your department's social media and records policy before anyone posts in an official capacity.

## What does this look like for a B2B SaaS company?

This is illustrative, not a client result. Picture a venture-backed SaaS company selling expense management software to mid-size firms in Australia and the US.

Their 30-minute check finds three things. A two-year-old r/Accounting thread ranks for "[their product] reviews" and calls the approval workflow confusing. ChatGPT's shortlist names four competitors. Not them. And their own comparison page against the market leader is thin, out of date and two releases behind the product.

The fix runs in this order:

1. Rebuild the comparison page: honest feature tables, pricing structure, migration steps.
2. Publish a clear help centre article on the approval workflow, because that's exactly what the thread complains about and what ChatGPT will look for.
3. Have their product lead reply in the old thread, disclosed, to explain the workflow change and link the help article.
4. Answer new questions in a few relevant subreddits each month.
5. Go after the listicles and review directories behind the ChatGPT shortlist, since that's where those answers come from.

Notice that only two of those five steps happen on Reddit. That's normal. For a company like this, Reddit is the experience layer, while the shortlist is won on lists, reviews and its own pages.

## How do you measure Reddit SEO?

Measure threads, AI answers and enquiries. Don't count karma, upvotes or post volume. Reddit work that can't show its effect on ranking threads or AI answers is guesswork.

Track these monthly:

| What to track | How | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mention log | Every reply and mention, with its live link and date | Shows what was done and where it lives |
| Threads ranking for your searches | Rank tracking on your 20 buyer questions | Shows whether the threads that matter mention you |
| AI answers | The same questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews | Shows whether you're named, and next to whom |
| Referral visits | Reddit as a referral source in GA4 | Shows people clicking through from threads |
| Pipeline | A "how did you hear about us" field on forms | Catches people who read a thread, then searched your name |

Most of Reddit's effect is indirect. Someone reads a thread, remembers your name and searches for you a week later. Branded search in Search Console, read across a full quarter, often tells you more than referral clicks.

## How does Searchmaxxed handle Reddit SEO?

Searchmaxxed includes Reddit engagement in its managed SEO and AI SEO packages, alongside the pages, links and digital PR it depends on. We map the threads that shape your category, contribute in your voice, and log every mention with its live link.

The work is set out on our [Reddit marketing service page](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/services/reddit-marketing). In practice it runs in four parts:

1. **Find where your market talks.** We map the subreddits, the recurring recommendation threads, and which threads rank in Google or feed AI answers.
2. **Contribute substance.** Every reply is written in your voice, follows each community's rules, is disclosed where disclosure is due, and is approved by you before it posts.
3. **Earn mentions where shortlists form.** The Growth System scales Reddit engagement to 10 mentions a month, and Agentic Search Engineering to 20.
4. **Log and measure.** Each mention goes in a monthly log with its live link, then we track whether ranking threads and AI answers start naming you.

Reddit is only one source. So the same packages cover the rest. The Growth System adds 30 page releases a month and AI visibility tracking. Agentic Search Engineering adds 50 page releases a month, comparison and integration pages, digital PR and link campaigns. It also tracks AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Custom & Enterprise covers several markets, dedicated engineering and original first-party research.

Here's how we do it. We build on a website you own, our Agentic Website. AI agents pull your Search Console and GA4 data, read the Google results and check what AI answers say about you. That feeds the Managed Search Loop, which shows which page, fix or mention should bring in the most enquiries next. Off your site, the [Off-Page Source Layer](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/source-layer) handles links, digital PR and community mentions, Reddit included.

Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than A$10 million in revenue through search for its clients.

## Is Searchmaxxed right for you?

We're a good fit for marketing and growth teams at enterprise, B2B SaaS, venture-backed, manufacturing and public-sector companies with real category competition. The common thread? They want Reddit handled as part of their wider search work, not as a standalone posting service.

| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
| --- | --- |
| Your buyers compare products and ask peers before they buy | Your buyers never discuss your category in public |
| You want Reddit, your site and AI answers handled by one team | You only want Reddit posts, with no work on your site |
| You want every reply approved by you and disclosed | You want volume, upvote packages or anonymous accounts |
| You compete in a crowded or multi-market category | You need pipeline from search this month to survive |
| You want to own your site, content and data | You want a dashboard and nobody shipping changes |

If you're in the right-hand column, a social listening tool or a specialist community manager may serve you better.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is SEO on Reddit?

SEO on Reddit means getting your brand mentioned, honestly, in Reddit threads that rank in Google and that AI answers read. It also covers optimising your own posts so they rank. For B2B companies, earning mentions in threads that already rank matters most.

### Do Reddit links help SEO?

Not directly. Links in Reddit posts are nofollow, so they pass little or no link authority. Their value is referral traffic, brand mentions and presence in the threads that Google ranks and AI answers read.

### Does ChatGPT still use Reddit?

Yes. Trackerly found roughly one in four pages ChatGPT consulted in August 2026 was still a Reddit thread. What fell was Reddit's share of ChatGPT's visible citations, from 3.8% to 0.5% according to Promptwatch.

### Is Reddit growing or declining?

Growing in users. Reddit reported 130.3 million daily active uniques in the second quarter of 2026, up 18% year on year. Its CEO called search referral traffic "choppy" that quarter, so Google traffic is less steady.

### What is the 90-9-1 rule on Reddit?

It's a rule of thumb that in online communities about 90% of people only read, 9% contribute occasionally and 1% create most of the content. It isn't a Reddit policy. It explains why one good answer gets read by many more people than reply to it.

### Can a company get banned for promoting on Reddit?

Yes. Reddit's rules ban spam, multiple accounts used to inflate a community, and bots that spread spam. Subreddit moderators can also ban brand accounts under their own rules. Post as a named, disclosed person and follow each community's rules.

### Should we start our own subreddit?

Only if you already have an active user base that wants a place to talk, as with developer tools or product communities. Branded subreddits rarely rank for buying searches. Most B2B companies get more from joining threads that already rank.

### Do Reddit Ads help with SEO?

No. Reddit Ads put paid posts in front of people on Reddit. They don't create the organic threads that Google ranks or AI engines read. Budget them separately.
