Review sites give AI answers material for comparing software: product categories, customer experience, strengths and limitations beyond a vendor's own claims. Start with accurate profiles and genuine feedback. Then comes the distinction that matters: an AI answer citing a review platform doesn't necessarily recommend your software. Read the answer, follow the source and check which product it supports.

I'm Brenden House, founder of Searchmaxxed. We do SEO and AI search optimisation for companies that want their products to appear when customers research a purchase.

## In summary

- Review platforms provide different evidence: software comparisons on G2 and Capterra, and company experience on Trustpilot.
- Choose platforms from the sources your customers' questions bring up, rather than collecting profiles wherever someone offers a badge.
- Keep review requests neutral. Follow both the platform's rules and the review laws that apply in Australia or the US.
- Measure citations, product recommendations and qualified enquiries separately, because a source link can support an answer that leaves your company out entirely.

## Why do review sites appear in AI answers about software?

Review sites put competing products and user experiences together, giving an AI answer material for questions such as “best maintenance software for manufacturers”. They supply comparison evidence. Your website supplies the current product facts, including integrations and limitations that a customer review might describe from an earlier version.

That distinction helps explain their relevance. It doesn't reveal an engine's private ranking formula.

[G2 describes its core offering](https://www.g2.com/llm-info) as peer reviews, software categories and comparison tools. [Capterra explains](https://www.capterra.com/resources/how-we-verify-reviews/) that it uses reviews to inform product evaluations and rankings, alongside information about reviewers' roles and organisations.

The context matters more than praise. A manufacturing operations manager describing an ERP integration answers a different question from an administrator saying the support team was pleasant.

Both experiences can be genuine. Only one answers the integration question.

The value extends beyond what engines retrieve: a review source can help a prospective buyer decide whether an answer deserves their confidence. In its [March 2026 survey of 1,076 software buyers](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/new-g2-research-half-of-b2b-software-buyers-now-start-their-research-with-ai-chatbots-302742807.html), G2 asked which signals made AI answers more convincing.

[G2 reported](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/new-g2-research-half-of-b2b-software-buyers-now-start-their-research-with-ai-chatbots-302742807.html) that 45% chose citations from software review sites as the most confidence-inspiring signal. That's a review platform's survey about buyer confidence, rather than a measurement of how often ChatGPT cites each domain.

Searchmaxxed connects those descriptions with your website. Consistency gives a prospective buyer less contradictory information to untangle when they move from an AI shortlist to checking your product themselves.

## How do G2, Capterra and Trustpilot differ for AI search?

G2 and Capterra organise evidence around software selection, while Trustpilot's business reviews describe experiences with a company. Start with that difference. For an enterprise SaaS product, a general reputation score cannot answer whether the software supports the integration or deployment model a procurement team requires.

These are platform roles, not a ranking of which site wins the most AI citations.

| Platform | Evidence to examine | Question it can help investigate | What to check yourself |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| G2 | Product categories, peer reviews, comparison tools and review context | How does this product compare with alternatives? | Whether the cited page concerns your exact product and relevant customer segment |
| Capterra | Software profiles, feature comparisons and reviews with professional context | Which products fit this workflow? | Whether descriptions and reviewer experiences match the current product |
| Trustpilot | Business experiences, service feedback and company replies | What happens when customers deal with this company? | Whether the feedback concerns the software, another product or an unrelated service |

Sources: [G2's platform description](https://www.g2.com/llm-info), [Capterra's review methodology](https://www.capterra.com/resources/how-we-verify-reviews/) and [Trustpilot's business guidelines](https://legal.trustpilot.com/for-businesses/guidelines-for-businesses).

A platform can matter without dominating every question. Keep Australian and US questions separate, especially when your support, product availability or contractual requirements differ between those markets.

Our wider guide to [AI search for SaaS](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/ai-search-for-saas) covers the website work around those questions. Here, the task is narrower: identify which external page supports which claim about your product, then check whether that claim still holds.

## What have we measured about review directories in AI answers?

Searchmaxxed's research found different review-directory use across engines, even within the same category of agency questions. The finding comes from our 29 September 2026 snapshot:

Perplexity cited a review directory (Semrush Agencies, Clutch, DesignRush and the like) in 36 of 44 agency answers. ChatGPT did it in 20 and Claude in 15. One agency's Clutch profile had six reviews and was cited 20 times.

It concerns agency searches, not software searches, so it cannot establish G2's or Capterra's share of SaaS recommendations.

The practical lesson still travels. Check the engines your customers use, because one combined visibility score can conceal a strong presence in one engine and an absence elsewhere.

The small Clutch profile also deserves attention. That single profile cannot tell you how many reviews your product needs. Examine why its page answered those particular questions instead.

For your product, examine the cited page. The useful question is whether it supports the buyer's requirement, not whether its badge looks better beside your competitor's badge.

## What can a software vendor legitimately improve?

A vendor can correct its own product information and invite eligible users to describe their actual experience. The platform controls moderation and presentation. Customers control their opinions.

Check product facts before requesting more reviews, because additional reviews won't correct an outdated description that still places your software in the wrong category.

| Check | Useful correction | Evidence behind it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Product identity | Distinguish the product from its parent company and other products | Current naming and product pages |
| Category | Choose categories that match what the product does | Demonstrable workflows, not an aspirational market |
| Integrations | Separate native integrations from API or third-party connections | Integration documentation |
| Deployment | Describe supported hosting and implementation options | Current technical documentation |
| Customer fit | Explain which teams and use cases the product serves | Supported features and permitted customer evidence |
| Commercial details | Correct obsolete plans or limits wherever the profile displays them | Current approved commercial information |

Keep the facts consistent without erasing useful detail. An integration page can explain setup steps while a profile summarises the connection, provided both describe the same capability and its current limits.

Your team manages its platform accounts. Searchmaxxed handles the agreed website work, including product pages, crawl and indexing fixes, matching schema and links between relevant pages.

That work gives an AI answer somewhere current to verify the product claim, and gives the buyer somewhere useful to go after discovering you.

## How should vendors request reviews under platform, FTC and ACCC rules?

Request genuine feedback without choosing reviewers by how positive you expect them to be. Apply the platform's rules as well as relevant law, because permission under one does not override a stricter requirement under the other.

The incentive rules differ.

| Rule source | What its guidance says | Practical approach |
| --- | --- | --- |
| G2 | Allows disclosed review incentives without conditioning eligibility on positive sentiment; prohibits biased collection | Follow its campaign rules and disclose incentives to G2 |
| Capterra | Describes nominal incentives for approved reviews regardless of the rating | Follow its review process rather than improvising a reward scheme |
| Trustpilot | Prohibits incentives and requires fair, neutral invitations | Offer no reward for leaving or changing a review |
| US FTC | Prohibits incentives conditioned expressly or implicitly on a particular sentiment | No rewards for favourable ratings; disclosure doesn't fix that condition |
| Australian ACCC | Says incentives must apply regardless of positive or negative sentiment, with clear disclosure | Disclose any permitted incentive and apply it equally |

Sources: [G2 community guidelines](https://legal.g2.com/community-guidelines), Capterra's review methodology, Trustpilot's business guidelines, [FTC review-rule guidance](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/consumer-reviews-testimonials-rule-questions-answers) and [ACCC online-review guidance](https://www.accc.gov.au/business/advertising-and-promotions/online-reviews-for-product-and-services).

Review gating means sending satisfied customers towards public reviews while diverting dissatisfied customers elsewhere. G2 and Trustpilot prohibit this selective collection, so a satisfaction survey should not become the filter that decides who receives the public invitation.

A neutral invitation can stay simple:

Please share your experience using our product. What worked well, what didn't, and what would help someone considering it?

Let the customer supply the details. Avoid suggested claims, prewritten praise or requests to insert a target keyword that the customer would never have used to describe their experience.

If a review breaches platform rules, report the specific issue with evidence. Otherwise, respond to the substance without exposing customer information or pressuring the reviewer to change their opinion.

For public-sector customers, check their employer's gift and endorsement policies before any invitation involving a benefit. Their organisation may impose stricter limits.

Searchmaxxed doesn't write customer reviews. Our role here is to build accurate website content and measure how the wider evidence describes your business, without manufacturing the evidence itself.

## What would this look like for a manufacturing-software company?

Consider a hypothetical SaaS vendor selling maintenance software to manufacturers in Australia and the US. It wants consideration for ERP-connected maintenance workflows. The following example is a proposed diagnostic exercise, not a client result.

An AI answer cites a review describing manual exports. The vendor now offers a native integration, but its profile still repeats the old description.

Keep the old review intact. It may accurately describe the customer's experience at the time, even though the product has since changed and the current documentation needs to explain how.

The vendor's team corrects the profile. Searchmaxxed's website work would explain the integration's supported functions, setup requirements and limitations on a dedicated page, with links from relevant product pages.

Current users can describe their own experience. A new review should come from actual use, without the vendor scripting a rebuttal to the older review or asking for specific praise.

Then rerun the same buyer question. Check whether the answer still describes manual exports, whether it finds the new documentation, and whether it recommends the product for the right reason.

That's a better test than counting badges. Our guide to [software comparison pages](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/comparison-pages) covers how to explain those differences on your own site without duplicating the review platform's content.

## How do you measure whether review platforms help your AI visibility?

Track the exact cited URL, what the answer says about your product and the enquiries that follow. Keep those observations separate. Searchmaxxed's AI search work combines answer tracking with Search Console, GA4 and sales feedback, rather than treating every source link as a commercial win.

Use a fixed set of realistic purchase questions. Include category shortlists, alternatives, integrations and suitability questions that match the markets and customer segments you actually serve.

For each run, save the question, engine, date, market, search setting and complete answer. Repeat the questions under comparable conditions before treating a change as a pattern.

| Observation | What to record | What it tells you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Platform citation | Exact review URL and the claim it supports | Which external page the answer presents as evidence |
| Product mention | Product name and surrounding description | Whether the answer includes you, even without recommending you |
| Recommendation | Use case, reasons and any reservations | Whether the answer puts you forward for a relevant requirement |
| Accuracy | Wrong features, stale details or mistaken identity | Which product facts need correction or clearer support |
| Website visit | Referrer and landing page where available | Whether an identifiable visit follows |
| Qualified enquiry | Company fit, requested product and sales outcome | Whether discovery contributes to a useful commercial conversation |

Return to the manufacturing-software example. If the integration description improves but enquiries don't, investigate the product page and enquiry path before deciding the review work failed or succeeded commercially.

One caution changes the interpretation. An AI answer can cite Capterra's category page while recommending a competitor, so counting that domain as your own visibility would inflate the result.

## Is Searchmaxxed right for this work?

Searchmaxxed fits SaaS and enterprise teams that need website changes alongside [AI search optimisation](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/services/ai-search-optimization). We build and improve the product, industry, integration and comparison pages that explain why your software fits a particular customer requirement.

Growth System includes ongoing page releases and AI visibility tracking. Agentic Search Engineering adds comparison, industry and integration page families, with answer tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

Custom & Enterprise can cover multiple markets, dedicated engineering and custom reporting. The business owns its website, repository, content and data, with direct access to the people doing the work rather than an account-manager relay.

| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
| --- | --- |
| You need product, integration and comparison pages built and improved | You want strategy advice with no changes to your site |
| You need AI answer tracking connected with website and enquiry data | You only need platform accounts claimed or review invitations sent |

We won't manufacture praise or rewrite customer opinions. The work is making your actual product easier to understand, then connecting its search visibility with the enquiries your sales team wants.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does ChatGPT use G2 reviews?

G2 pages can provide software evidence for AI answers. Check the source links in the specific ChatGPT response to establish whether it cited G2 and which claim the page supports.

### Do Capterra AI citations mean my product appears?

No. An answer can cite a Capterra comparison or category page while discussing other vendors, so record your product's actual mention and recommendation separately.

### Is Trustpilot useful for B2B software?

Trustpilot can help buyers examine company experience and service. For a technical shortlist, pair that reputation evidence with product-specific reviews and documentation that explain integrations, deployment options and supported use cases.

### How many reviews do you need for AI recommendations?

There is no verified universal review threshold in the sources behind this guide. Start with genuine feedback from eligible users and measure the questions where your product should fit.

### Can you offer an incentive for a software review?

It depends on the platform and applicable rules. G2 and Capterra describe sentiment-neutral incentives, while Trustpilot prohibits them; a reward must never depend on receiving a favourable review.

### Should you remove old negative reviews after improving the product?

A genuine historical review should remain the customer's account. Explain current capabilities through your profile, public response where appropriate and dated product documentation, rather than treating a product update as grounds for removal.

### Does paying a review platform buy ChatGPT citations?

Treat paid platform features and AI citations as separate decisions. A sponsored placement on a review site does not demonstrate that ChatGPT will cite the page or recommend your product for a buyer's requirements.

Your product needs a coherent explanation wherever customers check it, from an AI answer to a review profile to the integration page on your website.
