Distributor SEO helps engineers, procurement teams and maintenance buyers find the products you supply, then place an order or request a quote. Start with the product record. Build useful category pages, make the catalogue crawlable, and add information only your business can provide: supply territories, technical support, pack sizes and ordering requirements. Keep negotiated prices private. The public catalogue still needs to explain what you sell and how someone can buy it.

I'm Brenden House, founder of Searchmaxxed. We do SEO, technical SEO, AI SEO, GEO and AEO, with website implementation included. For distributors, they meet inside the catalogue.

## In summary

- Give exact part searches a product page, broader searches a category, and manufacturer searches a useful brand page.
- Keep manufacturer specifications accurate. Add your own supply and purchasing information instead of rewriting technical facts for novelty.
- Separate public product information from private account prices, customer contracts and negotiated stock allocations.
- Treat cross-references as technical claims. A similar part number doesn't establish an interchangeable product.
- Measure accepted RFQs and orders by product family, alongside rankings and traffic.

## How do industrial customers search for your products?

Industrial supplier SEO needs pages for exact parts, product families, manufacturer ranges and applications, because a known-item search differs from a technical selection question. Those searches require different answers. A procurement manager searching a known part shouldn't have to read a general buying guide before finding the quote button.

These search patterns are illustrative.

| Search pattern | Best destination | What the page must establish |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Manufacturer name plus full part number | Product page | Exact identity, specification, supply status and ordering route |
| Product family plus material or specification | Category page | Relevant range, selection criteria and useful filters |
| Manufacturer name plus distributor | Brand page | Products carried, genuine relationship and territory |
| Application plus component type | Application or selection guide | Suitability, limitations and links to relevant products |
| Obsolete part plus replacement | Retained product or cross-reference page | Original identity, replacement evidence and differences |
| Product plus country or region | Relevant category, territory or branch page | Where you supply it and any sales restrictions |

We map searches before writing. We combine Search Console queries, live search results and your sales team's product priorities rather than treat every catalogue entry as equally valuable.

Start with a commercially useful range. If a product family generates enquiries your team cannot fulfil, more traffic to it won't solve the underlying problem.

A brand page needs more than logos. Explain which ranges you carry, where you supply them and what technical or assembly support you provide, using claims your commercial team can verify.

## Do manufacturer descriptions cause duplicate-content problems?

Manufacturer descriptions become a problem when they leave distributors offering the same answer with nothing useful added about their own stock, services or supply conditions. Identical specifications don't demand different wording.

Google says [some duplicate content is normal](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/canonicalization) and does not violate its spam policies, which matters when many authorised sellers carry the same manufacturer specifications. It also groups sufficiently similar pages and selects a representative URL. That distinction matters. Ordinary duplication isn't automatically a penalty, but it can leave your page without a reason to be chosen.

Keep the dimensions, materials, tolerances and safety information faithful to the source. Your contribution belongs beside them:

- Whether you stock the item, source it to order or supply it through another warehouse.
- The unit of sale, pack quantity and minimum order requirements.
- Available drawings and certificates.
- Any verified assembly, kitting or technical selection service.
- Territory limits and the steps needed to obtain a quote.

For a valve distributor, a rewritten definition of a valve adds little. A clear explanation of supplied accessories and ordering exclusions can answer the question holding up an RFQ, without changing a word of the original specification.

We build that distinction into product templates. Your team supplies the verified facts; Searchmaxxed turns them into readable pages, internal links and structured data that agrees with the visible content.

The feed needs attention too. A product information management system, or PIM, holds catalogue data. Enterprise resource planning software, or ERP, often holds operational records such as inventory and account pricing.

Set field ownership before editing. Otherwise, the next manufacturer import can overwrite the useful details your team just added, putting the original generic description back where your purchasing guidance belongs.

## How should distributors handle part numbers and cross-references?

Keep the manufacturer's part number distinct from your internal SKU, and distinguish aliases from replacement products. These are different relationships.

An MPN, or manufacturer part number, identifies a manufacturer's part; a SKU, or stock keeping unit, identifies an item within your own inventory system. A GTIN is a Global Trade Item Number. It identifies products across sellers.

Google's [product identification guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2021/02/product-information) recommends accurate brand names, MPNs and GTINs where they exist. Missing doesn't mean make one up.

For each priority product, we would check:

1. The visible manufacturer name and full MPN match the source documentation.
2. The page title, heading and specification table identify the same item.
3. Punctuation variants work in your site search without creating separate public pages for identical products.
4. Important suffixes survive imports, exports and quote forms.
5. Cross-references name their source and explain whether they mean an alias, a superseded part or a possible alternative.

Preserve the manufacturer's original notation. Normalising punctuation for search is useful, but stripping a meaningful suffix can erase the distinction between products your customers cannot safely substitute.

A cross-reference is a claim about a relationship between parts. It isn't proof of interchangeability. Publish the relevant differences and get your technical specialist to confirm any replacement recommendation before it becomes searchable advice for someone ordering a critical component.

Searchmaxxed handles the search implementation. Your technical team confirms product suitability.

## Which catalogue URLs should Google index?

Index useful product, category and brand pages, while controlling duplicate URLs created by sorting, filters and repeated catalogue routes that show the same underlying item.

A canonical tag identifies a preferred URL among duplicate or closely similar pages. [Google can choose a different canonical](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/consolidate-duplicate-urls).

Take a product reachable through both a manufacturer menu and an application menu: both routes can link to the same product URL without duplicating it.

Use the same URL in internal links, XML sitemaps and canonical tags, as [Google's ecommerce guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/ecommerce/designing-a-url-structure-for-ecommerce-sites) recommends, so those signals identify the preferred page. Link to products through browsable categories.

Faceted navigation means filters that narrow a catalogue by attributes such as brand, material or size, helping customers find a suitable item within the range. Some combinations deserve their own search page. Others only help browsing.

A useful brand-and-category page can stand on its own when it serves a distinct search and carries an appropriate range. A changing sort order usually cannot.

We check the rules at template level. That includes mobile rendering and Core Web Vitals, because slow specification tables and unstable quote buttons can undermine an otherwise useful product page.

Test the logged-out mobile version. Confirm that specifications appear as readable text, category links work and the quote action remains usable before treating a template change as finished.

Our [faceted navigation SEO guide](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/faceted-navigation-seo) covers the detailed indexing decisions, including why robots.txt, noindex and canonicals aren't interchangeable controls for the URLs your filters create.

Check the business model too. If independent sellers maintain separate listings and offers on your platform, our [marketplace SEO guide](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/research/marketplace-seo) addresses the decisions created by a catalogue with multiple sellers.

## Can wholesale distributor SEO work with account-only pricing?

Yes, wholesale distributor SEO can work when prices require an account or a quote. Protect terms, not the entire catalogue. Visibility doesn't require disclosing negotiated prices.

Someone arriving from Google should still be able to confirm the product, read its specifications and understand your ordering route before signing in. Give the enquiry somewhere to start.

Keep customer-specific discounts, contract documents and stock allocations behind authentication, with the application enforcing access rather than relying on a crawler to stay away. Robots.txt doesn't make information private.

We would test the catalogue while logged out, then follow the route into a quote or account request using the details from a selected product. Does the selected product survive? Does login return the visitor to that item, or abandon them on an account dashboard?

### What schema works when prices aren't public?

Product structured data can describe an item without inventing an offer price, but that alone doesn't qualify the page for Google's product snippets. Eligibility has separate requirements.

Google's [product snippet documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/product-snippet) requires a product name plus an offer, a review or an aggregate rating. Each route has its own conditions. Use what the page supports.

Don't put a zero price into an Offer because the real price requires a conversation, or publish a private contract rate just to complete markup. Invented ratings are out too.

Merchant Center is another decision. Its [website requirements](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6363310?hl=en) include a functioning purchase process, so a quote-only catalogue shouldn't assume eligibility for shopping listings.

Account signup alone isn't disqualifying. Google's [price requirements](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324371?hl=en) allow free, straightforward signup, but require a displayed price that customers in the target country can buy at.

For bulk goods, the submitted price must cover the minimum purchasable quantity, rather than advertise a single unit that nobody can order alone. Keep the unit and pack clear.

We check markup against actual trading conditions. A useful organic landing page doesn't need a fabricated shopping offer to justify its existence.

## What would a distributor product-page fix look like?

A distributor product-page fix should connect the source product record, public page and RFQ without losing identity or exposing account data. The example below shows the decisions involved.

Consider a valve distributor supplying Australia and the US. Its catalogue imports manufacturer descriptions, maintains internal stock codes and requires quotes for negotiated orders, while sales needs enough detail to identify every requested item.

This is an illustrative implementation plan, not a Searchmaxxed client result.

| Catalogue condition | Page decision | Verification before release |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Manufacturer feed and ERP use different identifiers | Display MPN and internal SKU as separate fields | Both resolve to the correct saleable item |
| Product appears beneath several categories | Link each category to the chosen product URL | Internal links and canonical tags agree |
| Manufacturer description lacks purchasing detail | Add verified pack, document and supply information | Product owner checks every added claim |
| Price depends on the customer's account | Keep price private; explain the quote route publicly | Logged-out page and schema expose no contract price |
| Cross-reference has no technical evidence | Leave the proposed equivalence unpublished | Specialist verifies the relationship or rejects it |
| Quote form opens without product details | Carry product identity and requested quantity into the form | Sales receives the same item the visitor selected |
| Manufacturer feed updates overnight | Preserve distributor-authored fields separately | The next import leaves approved additions intact |

That last row is easily missed. Editing a page is wasted effort if an upstream import quietly replaces it before the next customer arrives, restoring the problem you thought was fixed.

Searchmaxxed's [technical SEO service](https://www.searchmaxxed.com/services/technical-seo) covers crawl, rendering, indexing, schema and template fixes, with implementation and live verification. Custom ERP or PIM integration needs its own agreed engineering scope.

## How can distributors appear in AI answers for part lookups?

AI SEO for distributors starts with accurate, accessible product information that answers the lookup directly and names the conditions that affect a purchase or replacement. Give the engine something precise to cite.

For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, [Google says no special optimisation is required](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), so the catalogue's existing crawl and content problems still deserve attention. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Make the important facts readable as text.

A part page should answer these questions without relying on an image or downloadable catalogue alone:

- Who makes it, and what is the complete part number?
- Which specifications distinguish this part from nearby variants with similar names or numbers?
- Is the cited replacement confirmed, conditional or unverified?
- Where is supply available?
- How does the customer request this exact item, with its quantity and required delivery date?

Link the manufacturer's supporting document where appropriate. Keep the essential answer on the page, including limitations that would otherwise disappear when someone reads a short extract.

Searchmaxxed includes GEO and AEO. We check what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers say, then improve the pages and facts behind relevant omissions or errors.

A supplier mention and a correct part recommendation aren't the same result. Record whether the answer names the right product, cites the right page and preserves the compatibility limits, rather than treating any brand mention as success.

## What changes between Australia and the US?

Distributor SEO for Australia and the US must reflect actual supply rights, product ranges and ordering conditions in each market where you want to sell. Changing the country name isn't enough.

Check territory permissions by manufacturer. A distributor may sell one range across both markets but hold restricted rights for another. The page must describe that difference accurately.

Useful market-specific details include stock location, delivery coverage, measurement units, documentation and any product approvals your technical team has verified. A badge alone doesn't establish certification.

Separate regional pages make sense when the available range or supply conditions differ enough to change the customer's decision about whether to order from you. They need consistent navigation and an intentional international SEO setup.

For a shared catalogue, explain market restrictions on the product page and preserve the destination country in the RFQ. We settle the structure before duplication.

## How do you measure distributor SEO beyond traffic?

Measure distributor SEO through accepted RFQs, new accounts and orders, grouped by landing page and product family so the team can see which ranges perform. Rankings explain visibility. They don't tell you whether the business could supply the requested item.

An RFQ is a request for quotation. Submission is only the start. Sales must distinguish a viable enquiry from an unsupported territory, an unavailable product or a request for technical information alone.

| Measurement | Question it answers |
| --- | --- |
| Search impressions and clicks by product family | Can potential customers find the range? |
| Quote starts and successful submissions | Can visitors complete the enquiry? |
| RFQs accepted by sales | Does the enquiry match what you can supply? |
| Quotes issued and orders won | Does search activity become business? |
| New accounts versus existing-customer orders | Is search acquiring customers or supporting repeat buying? |
| AI citations checked against source pages | Are engines describing the right products and limitations? |

Keep product identifiers and the landing-page URL attached to the enquiry through your CRM, subject to your privacy and consent requirements. Keep personal data out of analytics events.

Searchmaxxed connects Search Console and GA4 with page changes and available sales feedback. Where the CRM can't yet connect an enquiry to an order, report that gap rather than call every submission revenue because someone completed a form.

## Is Searchmaxxed right for your distribution business?

Searchmaxxed fits distributors that need technical SEO and catalogue content implemented together, with AI search included. Product expertise must come from you.

We build and improve the website rather than leave your team with an audit to translate into development tickets. The site and data stay yours.

Our managed packages differ in output and scope:

| Package | Published scope | Distributor application |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Growth System | 30 page releases a month; technical, schema and internal-link work doesn't reduce that commitment | Improve selected category, brand and product pages alongside template repairs |
| Agentic Search Engineering | 50 page releases a month, plus broader page families, digital PR and AI-answer tracking | Extend coverage across applications, industries and product comparisons |
| Custom & Enterprise | Agreed scope for multiple markets, dedicated engineering, custom reporting and first-party research | Coordinate a larger catalogue and additional integration requirements |

A page release means an approved new page or a substantial rebuild. It doesn't mean changing a title tag. Catalogue size alone doesn't decide the package; available data and implementation complexity matter too, especially when changes depend on upstream systems outside the public website.

Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than A$10 million in revenue through search for its clients.

The relevant test here is whether our implementation scope matches the catalogue problems you need solved, including the technical work that content production cannot replace.

| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
| --- | --- |
| Your catalogue has thousands of SKUs from many brands | Product facts can't be verified |
| You want category, brand and product pages fixed alongside templates | Nobody can authorise website changes |
| You want SEO and AI answers handled by one team | You need search to fill this quarter's pipeline on its own |
| You want to own your site, repository, content and data | You want strategy advice with no changes to your site |

We aren't the right fit for an engagement where product facts cannot be verified or nobody can authorise website changes. SEO cannot approve a replacement part.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can we do distributor SEO ourselves?

Yes, an in-house team can run distributor SEO if it combines search expertise, development access and product knowledge. Start with a priority range. Searchmaxxed is an option when you want the research, page work and technical implementation handled together.

### Do we need ecommerce checkout to rank?

No, a public catalogue can support organic search and quote requests without online checkout. Give each useful product a readable page and a clear RFQ route. Shopping-listing eligibility is a separate question.

### Should we rewrite every manufacturer description?

No, preserve accurate technical facts and add distributor-specific information where it helps customers choose or order. Prioritise commercially useful ranges. Rephrasing specifications throughout the catalogue can consume time without adding an answer.

### Should every part number have its own page?

Distinct products may need distinct pages when their specifications or purchasing requirements differ. Aliases for the same product generally don't. Decide from the product relationship, rather than the number of codes in your import.

### What should happen to discontinued products?

Keep a useful discontinued-product page when it still helps customers identify an old part or find a verified replacement. Mark the status clearly. Redirect only when the destination genuinely satisfies the original request; otherwise, retain the explanation or remove an unhelpful page appropriately.

### What affects the scope of distributor SEO?

Catalogue quality, duplicate URLs, rendering problems, page templates, regional differences and integration requirements determine the scope. Start by inspecting representative products and categories. A large clean catalogue can need less remedial work than a smaller inconsistent one.

### Can AI write our product descriptions?

AI can draft explanations from verified source fields, but a technical reviewer must check specifications, suitability and replacement claims. Keep source documents attached to the review. Searchmaxxed uses AI to assist production, not to establish engineering facts.

## Where should you start?

Start with a priority range and the route from its product pages to your sales team. Bring your catalogue URL and an example RFQ. We can establish which pages and technical changes belong in the scope.
