What 75 search-visible 404s taught us about website recovery
A rebuild can look clean while search engines keep requesting old URLs. Searchmaxxed found 75 Google-visible 404 routes in the historical surface, recovered the public paths and turned route preservation into a tested release contract.
Searchmaxxed publishes this work so you can inspect the evidence, use the method, and decide what deserves to be built next.
How Searchmaxxed uses this research
Searchmaxxed turns this evidence into an ordered build queue: the pages, proof, technical fixes, internal links and authority work most likely to improve qualified enquiries and revenue.
Key findings
- 75 GSC-visible 404s Historical recovery baseline.
- 228 public URLs checked All returned 200 in the 24 July live verification.
- 1 route ledger Every public route gets an explicit decision.
Why this failure was expensive
Broken historical URLs waste existing search equity, create dead journeys and leave Google revisiting pages that no longer answer. A polished new homepage does not compensate for a damaged URL history.
The first job was therefore recovery, not more content. Searchmaxxed pulled historical GSC page evidence, checked live HTTP status and reconciled the old and new route systems.
The recovery contract
Every route now needs a declared state: keep, upgrade, redirect, merge, hold or retire. Public routing, metadata, sitemap generation, prerendered HTML and internal links must agree.
The build also fails when public resources do not meet the evidence gate. That stops a large private corpus from silently turning into a large public liability.
What this changes for future releases
A website release is not complete when React renders. Production truth requires the intended commit, live deployment, correct HTTP response, crawlable HTML, canonical consistency, sitemap inclusion and post-release verification.
Use it now
- Export historical search-visible URLs before a migration.
- Check each old route against the intended new destination.
- Avoid sending unrelated old URLs to the homepage.
- Generate routes, canonicals, sitemap and prerendered HTML from one source.
- Run live HTTP and rendered-copy verification after release.
