How Local Businesses Get Found in Gemini

Reconcile the business facts Google and Gemini can surface, test local recommendation prompts properly and connect visibility to real enquiries.

AI Visibility

Local businesses get found in Gemini by making the facts Google can access accurate, complete and useful for the job and place being asked about. Keep your Business Profile, website, reviews and legitimate third-party evidence aligned; make the strongest service page eligible for Google Search; then test Gemini and Google AI surfaces separately. Business Profile access inside Gemini does not prove that editing a field will cause a recommendation.

The direct answer

Start with the Google fact stack:

  1. your real-world identity;
  2. the service and eligibility;
  3. the location or genuine service area;
  4. hours, booking links and current availability;
  5. reviews and independent proof;
  6. an indexed page that answers the local decision.

If those facts conflict, fix the source that owns each one. Then test the exact customer question with the location and personalisation state recorded.

There is no special Gemini schema, no guaranteed timeframe and no ethical way to buy organic inclusion.

Do not collapse three different Google surfaces

“Gemini SEO” is often sold as if one system has one ranking switch. That is wrong.

Surface What Google currently documents What you must not infer
Gemini app Gemini can answer questions and use connected apps; eligible owners can connect Business Profile for management and insights A connected profile is automatically recommended to customers
AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Normal SEO foundations apply; supporting pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible A special AI file or schema is required
Google local Search and Maps Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence These are a complete published Gemini ranking formula

The product names, interfaces and data flows overlap, but they are not interchangeable evidence.

Reconcile the business record before you optimise

Google's Business Profile guidelines say the profile should reflect the business as it is represented in the real world. The address or service area must be accurate, and categories should be limited to those needed to describe the core business.

Build a field-level reconciliation:

Business fact Owning source Website destination Review trigger
Trading name Legal and real-world brand record Header, contact and organisation details Rebrand or entity change
Address/service area Actual operating model Contact and location pages Move or coverage change
Category and services Current commercial offer Service hub and service pages Service launch or retirement
Hours Operating roster Contact, booking and relevant service page Holiday or roster change
Booking/action links Live conversion system Service CTA and contact flow Tool or URL change
Credentials Public register or issuing body Team and relevant service page Renewal, suspension or scope change
Customer evidence Genuine completed work Case evidence and approved review surface New evidence or correction

Do not duplicate a fact across 60 pages without an owner. A mass-edit problem is a future accuracy problem.

Use Gemini's Business Profile connection correctly

Google currently documents a gradual rollout that lets eligible Business Profile owners or managers connect a verified profile to the Gemini web app. Gemini can help them review or update hours, contact details, action links and profile attributes; draft review responses and posts; and inspect performance metrics and search keywords.

That is useful operationally. It can shorten the distance between noticing a wrong fact and correcting the managed source.

It does not establish:

  • that connected profiles receive more customer visibility;
  • that a Gemini-written description ranks better;
  • that profile edits cause a Gemini recommendation;
  • that Business Profile is the only source used in every Gemini answer.

Use the connection as a management interface, not a ranking claim.

Make the service page eligible and quotable

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says no additional technical requirements or special schema are needed.

For the service page that should win, verify:

  • Googlebot is allowed;
  • the page is indexable;
  • the main answer is visible as text;
  • internal links make the page findable;
  • structured data matches the visible content;
  • Business Profile information is current;
  • the page works on mobile;
  • the next action is obvious.

Then improve the answer itself:

We provide emergency electrical fault finding across Logan for homes and small commercial premises. After-hours attendance depends on technician availability. Call with the suburb, property type and fault symptoms so we can confirm whether the job is safe to attend.

That statement gives Google and the customer a service, place, customer type, limitation and action. “Your trusted local electrician” gives them almost nothing.

Build real local relevance

Google's local guidance says relevance is how well a Business Profile matches the search, distance is how far the business is from the searcher or stated place, and prominence reflects how well-known it is. Google lists links and reviews among the information that can contribute to prominence.

You cannot rewrite distance.

You can improve:

  • accurate categories and service fields;
  • complete service pages;
  • real service-area detail;
  • strong internal links;
  • legitimate local and trade references;
  • genuine reviews;
  • current hours and action links.

Do not create a fake office, stuff place names into the business name or publish doorway pages for areas you cannot distinguish. Those tactics make the record less defensible.

Treat location and personalisation as test variables

Google says Search results can vary because of location, language and personalisation. Its current Search-services guidance also says AI responses can be personalised from account activity when the relevant settings are enabled.

A proper Gemini test records:

Variable What to capture
Product Gemini app, AI Mode, AI Overview or another Google surface
Account Signed in/out and account type where relevant
Location Shared device location, stated location or inferred location
Personalisation Relevant setting state where observable
Prompt Exact wording and follow-up chain
Answer Full response, named businesses and qualifications
Sources Visible links, panels, profiles and citations
Outcome Correctness, mention, citation, visit and enquiry

If you do not record those variables, a changed answer can look like progress when it is only a different context.

Run the Google fact-reconciliation audit

Choose one high-value service and one priority geography.

  1. Capture the current Business Profile fields.
  2. Capture the relevant service and location page text.
  3. Check the real-world source for hours, licence and coverage.
  4. Compare the values field by field.
  5. Freeze Gemini and Search AI answers for a prompt panel.
  6. Fix contradictions at the owning source.
  7. Improve the service page's decision information.
  8. Retest after Google has processed the changes.

Classify every finding:

  • correct and consistent;
  • correct but incomplete;
  • conflicting;
  • stale;
  • unsupported;
  • not applicable.

This produces a repair queue. A generic “Gemini visibility score” does not.

Measure each outcome separately

Google says Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode activity inside the Web search type. That means first-party Search data does not give you a clean Gemini-only ranking report.

Use:

  • Search Console for indexed pages, queries, clicks and impressions in Google's combined Web reporting;
  • Business Profile performance for profile views and supported interactions;
  • manual, controlled Gemini/AI-surface observations;
  • analytics and call tracking for visits and enquiries;
  • CRM or booking data for suitable outcomes.

Do not call an answer a citation unless it attributes or links to a source. Do not call a citation a lead. Do not report an absent privacy-suppressed row as zero demand.

What to fix first

Start where the contradiction can cost a job:

  • wrong hours for an urgent service;
  • outdated phone number;
  • area claimed on the website but absent from the operating model;
  • service marked available when it has been retired;
  • licence claim without current scope;
  • booking link that fails on mobile.

Fix commercial truth first. Add supporting content only when the customer still lacks an answer after the facts agree.

FAQ

Is Gemini SEO different from local SEO?

It adds platform-specific testing and source analysis, but the foundations remain accurate local facts, useful pages, crawlability, reputation and genuine local relevance.

Does Gemini use Google Business Profile?

Google documents a Business Profile connected app for eligible owners to manage their own profile and insights in Gemini. Google does not publish a rule saying that connection guarantees customer-facing recommendations.

Does schema make a business appear in Gemini?

No. Google says no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data should accurately match visible page content.

Do reviews guarantee Gemini recommendations?

No. Google says reviews can help local prominence and customer decisions. It does not guarantee a particular Gemini answer.

Should we make a page for every suburb?

Only where a page can add genuine operational and customer value. Use strong regional pages and clear coverage when individual suburb pages would be duplicates.

How long will changes take?

Profile edits, crawling, indexation and recommendation responses can update on different schedules. Google does not guarantee inclusion or a fixed processing-to-result timeline.

What should we measure?

Measure factual accuracy, Search eligibility, controlled prompt coverage, visible sources, profile/search interactions, visits and suitable enquiries as separate states.

Stop selling Google conflicting facts

We will reconcile the service, location, profile and proof behind your most valuable local queries, then test what Gemini and Google AI surfaces actually show. You get a repair plan tied to calls and bookings—not a screenshot dressed up as strategy.
