WHY
Why this tool exists.
Ranking in the top ten and earning a citation are now two outcomes. A page can hold position three and never get quoted. A page nobody tracks can appear in the answer above it. This tool runs one search through both surfaces and shows the gap.
Most checkers look at one result set. This runs one query through Google's organic results and through AI Mode. It puts the ranking domains and the cited domains on one screen. You see whether your market's answer layer has moved past your rankings.
What is a Google AI Overview?
An AI Overview is the answer Google writes at the top of a results page, drawing on pages it selects and links as sources. It occupies the position that used to belong to the first organic result, and it resolves many questions without a click going anywhere.
The set of pages Google cites in that answer is often not the set ranking below it. A clearly structured page on a smaller domain gets quoted while a larger competitor holds position two and is never mentioned.
How does the comparison work?
One query runs through two live surfaces at the same time: Google's organic results to depth ten, and Google's AI Mode answer. Every URL from both is reduced to its registrable domain so that a www prefix or a trailing path cannot create a false difference.
The result reports three sets of domains. The first set ranks in the top ten and earns a citation. The second earns a citation without ranking at all. The third ranks in the top ten and the answer ignores it. That third set stings the most.
Why does a citation matter more than a ranking?
Ahrefs measured 300,000 keywords against Search Console data. An AI Overview cut clicks to the top-ranking page by 58 percent. At position ten the loss falls to roughly 19 percent. The ranking survives while the traffic drops.
That makes the citation the outcome worth engineering. Everyone who reads the answer reads the cited page, including the people who never scroll. A page ranking beneath an answer that ignores it collects a fraction of its old clicks.
Who should check their AI Overview citations?
Anyone whose traffic fell without their rankings moving. That pattern is the signature of an answer layer arriving over a query set, and it is invisible in a rank tracker.
It also shows a sceptical stakeholder what changed. The two sets sit side by side for a query they already care about.
What does this checker not do?
It reads one query at one moment. Google regenerates AI answers often, so results change between runs. Treat one result as a snapshot. Treat a repeated pattern across several queries as the signal.
