Key takeaways
A reliable AI Overview check uses three sources at once: a signed-out search, Search Console's Generative AI report and a keyword-level checker. Repeat it monthly.
| Method | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Signed-out manual search | Whether an overview shows now, and who it cites |
| Search Console Generative AI report | Which pages earn AI Overview and AI Mode impressions |
| Free checker, one keyword | The overview text and every cited source, by country |
| Paid tracker | Citations across your whole keyword set, over time |
Sample every market and device you sell in, because overviews change from one refresh to the next and one screenshot proves little.
To check whether you appear in Google's AI Overviews, combine three sources: a signed-out search, Search Console's Generative AI report and an AI Overview checker. Search the keyword yourself and expand the overview's full list of sources. Search Console's report shows which pages earn AI Overview impressions, and a checker shows which searches cite you, by country and device. You need all three. Search Console counts pages but never shows the searches behind them, and a manual search shows you one moment in one place.
Here at Searchmaxxed, we track this every month for law firms, clinics and premium builders, in AI Overviews and the AI engines their buyers ask. Then we go after the answers that name their competitors. Want to know where you stand first? Start with a free search analysis.
What does an AI Overview checker tell you?
An AI Overview checker runs a Google search for your keyword, then reports whether an AI Overview appeared and which pages it cited. Yours, or someone else's. The better ones let you set the country and language, and show you the overview's full text as well.
Track three results separately:
- Presence: an AI Overview appeared for the search.
- Citation: the overview links to one of your pages as a source.
- Mention: the overview's text names your company.
An overview can cite your page and still recommend your competitor, which is the worst of both worlds for a B2B shortlist. The mention is the prize.
Presence comes first, because Google doesn't show an overview on every search. Its guide to AI features says AI Overviews "are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger". Pew Research Center found an AI summary on 18% of the Google searches in its US study, using March 2025 browsing data.
The stakes sit in the clicks. In the same Pew study, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% when none appeared. Your ranking can hold steady while the traffic underneath drains away, and that's when someone asks, "are we in AI Overviews?"
| Record this | Where you find it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Overview: yes or no | Top of the results page | No overview means a classic ranking fight |
| Your URL in the sources | The link cards, after "Show all" | That's a citation |
| Your brand in the text | The answer itself | That's a mention |
| Every other source domain | The link cards | These are the pages you're up against |
| Date, country, device | Your own notes | Answers change on all three |
How do you check AI Overviews manually?
Search the exact keyword in a private browser window, signed out of Google, then expand the overview and read every source. Record what you see with the date, country and device. Then search again later on another device, because the answer often changes.
Here's the routine, step by step:
- Sign out and open a private window. Signed-in results reflect your history, and even in a private window Google reads your location from your IP address.
- Type it the way buyers do: "what is XDR", say, or "SIEM vs SOAR".
- Expand the overview, then expand the sources. Ahrefs notes that some cited sources only become visible when someone clicks "Show all".
- Log what you see: overview or not, your URL in the sources, your brand in the text, and every other source domain. Add the date, country and device.
- Search again on your phone, and again the next day. Ahrefs describes Google's AI summaries as non-deterministic: they change with every refresh, and so do the URLs they cite.
That last step matters most. In a separate Ahrefs study, only 54% of the brands, people and places in an AI Overview stayed the same between answers. One check is a coin toss.
Manual checks suit your top ten searches. Past that, the routine eats an afternoon a week and shows only the market you're sitting in.
What does Search Console show about AI Overviews?
Search Console shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date. It never shows the searches behind those appearances, and it counts impressions only, so you still need a checker for keywords.
Google rolled the Generative AI performance report out to every site worldwide on 31 August 2026. It's useful, with hard edges:
| What the report gives you | What it leaves out |
|---|---|
| Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, combined | Clicks and click-through rate |
| Pages, countries, devices and dates | The searches that triggered each impression |
| A filter for text and image searches | Anything that isn't an impression |
| An export of the chart and table | Anything past the usual 1,000-row limit |
Two smaller traps catch teams. First, values that show as "~" or "-" in the report export as zeros, which can quietly wreck a month-on-month chart. Second, if the report never appears, Google says your site has too few impressions or is excluded under Settings > Search generative AI. Our guide to ranking in AI Overviews covers that setting.
Your main Performance report counts the same activity, mixed in with your blue links under the "Web" search type, according to Google's AI features guide. Google's help page on impressions and position adds the detail most teams miss: an AI Overview "occupies a single position in search results, and all links in the AI Overview are assigned that same position". Your reported position is the topmost spot any of your links held, so a citation can lift it well above your blue-link rank.
That gives you a useful clue. Here's how we use it:
- Note your top ten pages in the Generative AI report.
- Open the main Performance report, filter to one of those pages, and list every query it earned impressions for in the period.
- Flag question searches where Search Console's position sits well above the rank your tracker shows for the same page and market.
- Confirm each one with a checker.
Treat each flag as a lead, because other features near the top, like a knowledge panel, also share one position across their links.
Which AI Overview checkers can you use?
Free AI Overview checkers from SEO.com, Semrush and SEOmator will tell you whether a keyword or domain shows up in AI Overviews today. Paid trackers such as Sitechecker's watch a keyword list over time. Each answers a different question.
Here's what each vendor's own page said when we checked them on 29 October 2026:
| Tool | What you enter | What you get back | Access, as published |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO.com AI Overview Checker | Email and a keyword; domain optional | Top 100 keywords with overviews, cited URLs, estimated lost visits | Free, three checks a day |
| Semrush AI Overviews Visibility Checker | Your domain | Visibility score out of 100, mentions, cited pages, competitor gaps | Free |
| SEOmator AI Overview Keywords Checker | One keyword, country, language | Overview text and every cited source | Free, no account; tracking needs one |
| Sitechecker AI Overview Checker & Tracker | Keyword list, or a Search Console import | Whether you're cited, your source position, trends | 14-day free trial |
Read the caveats first. Semrush says its visibility score "is not an exact count of appearances" and works as a relative score against your competitors instead. SEOmator calls its result "a snapshot, not a rank", and it checks one keyword per run, in one market, at one moment.
Watch for readiness scorers. H&U Solutions' checker, for example, estimates a GEO readiness score out of 100 from your URL and keyword, which describes a page. It can't tell you whether Google cites you today.
Need ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity tracked too? Our comparison of AI visibility tools covers the trackers that watch several engines at once.
How do you track AI Overview rankings across keywords, locations and devices?
Fix one keyword set and check it on a schedule, in every country and on every device you sell to, then report rates. A single "AI Overview ranking" means little, because cited sources reshuffle between refreshes.
Build the sample in four parts:
- Keywords: 30 to 50 searches your buyers make before they talk to sales, plus your top question-style queries from Search Console.
- Countries: every market you sell in, because the Generative AI report already splits impressions by country.
- Devices: desktop and mobile, checked separately.
- Runs: at least two per month for each combination, on different days.
Then track three rates, and the same three for your top competitors:
| Rate | How to work it out |
|---|---|
| Overview rate | Checks showing an overview ÷ all checks |
| Citation rate | Overviews citing your domain ÷ all overviews |
| Mention rate | Overviews naming your brand ÷ all overviews |
A worked example
Say you sell a cloud security platform in the US and Australia, and you track 40 buyer searches on two devices, twice a month. That's 320 checks. If 200 show an overview and 30 of those cite you, your citation rate is 15%. Next month shows whether it moved, and whose rate rose instead.
Wording matters too, because small phrasing changes can flip whether an overview appears at all, as our own check of Australian SEO searches found:
27 of 32 Australian SEO searches we checked showed an AI Overview. Add "agency" and a city and it collapses: 2 of 8. Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Canberra showed none. Local agency searches are still a ten-blue-links fight.
So track the phrasings your buyers type, especially the comparison and pricing searches they run just before they talk to sales.
Keep it all in one shared log. Give it eight columns: date, country, device, keyword, overview, cited URL, brand named and other source domains, then add Search Console's page totals monthly. The sheet shows which searches cite you. Search Console shows how often those pages appear overall.
What should you do when an AI Overview cites a competitor instead of you?
Rank for the search, answer it in the opening lines of your page, and earn mentions on the sites the overview already trusts. A checker shows you the gap. Closing it is ordinary SEO, done well.
Ranking comes first, though not only for the exact search. In Ahrefs' March 2026 study, 38% of AI Overview citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same search, down from about 76% in July 2025. Many of the rest rank for the follow-up searches Google runs behind the overview.
Then read the source lists. Who keeps getting cited across your keywords? Which of their pages answers the question in its first two lines, with a number or a verdict, where yours makes the reader scroll? Those patterns tell you what to build. Our guide to ranking in AI Overviews covers the fixes, and our guide to showing up in AI search adds ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
Is Searchmaxxed right for you?
We're a strong fit if you run marketing, growth or SEO at a law firm, clinic or premium builder that's slipping in Google. Maybe you're also missing from AI answers. You want to know where AI Overviews and the other engines name you, and you want someone to change the answers that don't.
We track what Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity say about you and your competitors on the searches that bring buyers. Then we put your name into the answers that go to a competitor today. We track which searches and AI answers turn into revenue, through your CRM as well as GA4, so you can see which ones pay. You talk to the people doing the work, and you own your site, content and data from day one. Our AI search optimisation service sets out the full scope.
One client came to us with a website that wasn't working. Three months later he was on page one for one of the most competitive searches in his industry. Now he has more high-intent leads than he can handle, and we're building the systems to handle them.
Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than $15 million in revenue through search for its clients.
"I can't believe this worked." That's what we hear. Clients tell us they finally found a growth partner in search that keeps its word and gets things done.
We're the wrong call in two cases. If you need leads this month just to survive, search takes longer than that. And if all you want is a dashboard of AI Overview citations to watch in-house, one of the trackers above will cost you less.
What should you do this week?
Pick your ten most important buyer searches and check each one signed out, on desktop and then on your phone, noting who gets cited. Then open the Generative AI performance report and note which pages already earn impressions. By Friday, you'll have a baseline to measure every change against.
Want the full picture? Get your free search analysis. We'll benchmark you against your top competitors across Google, ChatGPT and the other AI engines. We'll show you where they're named instead of you, and the few moves that will matter most.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free AI Overview checker?
Yes. SEO.com, Semrush and SEOmator all offer free AI Overview checkers. Free checkers usually cap daily checks or cover one keyword per run, and tracking over time usually needs an account or a paid plan.
Does Google Search Console show AI Overviews?
Yes, partly. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. It doesn't show the searches behind them or any clicks. Pair it with a keyword-level checker.
How do I check AI Overviews in another country?
Use a checker that lets you set the country and language, such as SEOmator's, or a paid tracker with location settings. A private window won't fix it, because Google still reads your location from your IP address.
Why does a colleague see an AI Overview when I don't?
AI Overviews change with every refresh, and results also differ by location, device and account, so two people can see different answers minutes apart. Track rates across repeated checks instead of trading screenshots.
How often should I check AI Overviews?
Monthly suits most companies, with at least two runs per keyword in each market and on each device, plus a check after any page rebuild. Weekly checks mostly record noise.
Does an AI Overview checker cover AI Mode?
Usually not. AI Mode is a separate, chat-style Google search with its own answers and links, so most checkers handle it with a separate tool. Search Console's Generative AI performance report counts both together.
Can you appear in an AI Overview without ranking on page one?
Yes. In Ahrefs' March 2026 study, only 38% of AI Overview citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same search. Ranking for the related questions Google searches behind the overview counts too.
