AI search optimisation for law firms means making your expertise easy to find, verify and cite when someone asks an AI tool for legal help. Start with practice pages, industry expertise and current lawyer profiles. Connect those pages to evidence, then check which outside sources the answers use. For mid-size and large firms, the useful result is a place on a relevant client's shortlist, followed by the right enquiry.
I'm Brenden House. I run Searchmaxxed, an SEO and AI SEO agency. This guide covers commercial law firms serving businesses in Australia and the US.
Sources reviewed: 27 October 2026 (AEST).
In summary
- Build around the work you want. Practice pages need to explain the matter, jurisdiction, relevant industry experience and lawyers who can help.
- Keep credentials precise. A lawyer's ranking, a department ranking and a firm-wide claim mean different things.
- Check the actual sources. Chambers, Legal 500 and Doyle's deserve attention, but record which pages appear for your firm's target questions.
- Keep legal review inside publishing. Australian state rules and US state rules apply to the claims, regardless of whether an AI tool helped write them.
- Measure shortlists and suitable enquiries alongside traffic. A citation to an article isn't the same as a recommendation to instruct your firm.
What does AI search optimisation change for a law firm?
AI search optimisation adds citations and recommendations to the work of winning organic search traffic. It doesn't replace SEO. Searchmaxxed handles both within the same service, so your practice pages support Google searches and the questions people ask ChatGPT.
The terms overlap. GEO, or generative engine optimisation, means improving visibility in generated answers. AEO, or answer engine optimisation, focuses on clear answers that search systems can extract. Legal AI SEO and LLM SEO describe closely related work.
Google's guidance on AI features says existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant. AI Overviews need no extra technical requirements beyond Google's existing search rules, and the same applies to AI Mode, according to that guidance.
That matters for budget decisions. Crawl access, useful content and internal links belong in the core work, rather than becoming an unexplained AI surcharge on the same pages.
| Where your firm appears | What the reader sees | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Organic search | A link to a practice page or article | Relevant visits and enquiries |
| Google AI Overview or AI Mode | An answer with supporting links | Whether your page supports the answer |
| ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity | An explanation or shortlist, sometimes with sources | Citation, firm mention and recommendation separately |
An article citation establishes visibility. A recommendation for the wrong practice doesn't establish commercial progress.
Which pages help a commercial law firm get shortlisted?
Practice pages, industry pages and lawyer profiles should explain the same capability from different angles. Searchmaxxed connects those pages through relevant internal links and evidence.
Start with the client's situation. A venture-backed software company choosing expansion counsel needs more than an article defining a contract, however neatly someone has arranged its headings.
Consider this illustrative enquiry:
> “Which law firms advise B2B SaaS companies expanding into Australia, including enterprise contracts and privacy?”
This is a planning example. It isn't a captured client enquiry or a claim about a particular firm's work.
The page plan follows the decision:
| Page | What the SaaS buyer needs | What the firm must substantiate |
|---|---|---|
| Technology transactions practice | Contract work, service scope and jurisdictions | The actual work the team accepts |
| Software industry page | Familiarity with enterprise procurement and software businesses | Approved sector experience, not a copied industry label |
| Privacy practice | Relevant advisory work and geographic scope | Lawyers and jurisdictions covered |
| Lawyer profiles | Who handles the matter and why | Current roles, admissions and relevant experience |
| Representative matters | Evidence of comparable work | Permission to publish and an accurate description |
| Legal analysis | An answer to the next substantive question | Named legal reviewer, primary sources and review date |
Now connect them. The software page should link to the relevant practices and lawyers, while their profiles link back to the work they actually do.
That's a useful website structure. Publishing near-identical pages for every practice and industry combination creates more copy to maintain without explaining anything new about the firm's capabilities or experience.
For the US version, change the jurisdiction and qualified lawyers, then rewrite the legal substance where required. Changing a country name isn't localisation.
How should lawyer profiles demonstrate expertise?
Lawyer profiles should connect a named person to verified qualifications, relevant work and the pages describing that work. Searchmaxxed builds those connections into copy and site structure.
A name and portrait aren't enough. Equally, a biography doesn't need to reproduce every committee appointment before telling the reader whether this lawyer handles their problem.
For each profile, record:
- Current role and practice responsibilities.
- Admissions and jurisdictions, checked against the firm's records.
- Relevant industry experience and approved representative matters.
- Articles the lawyer wrote or substantively reviewed.
- Recognitions with the exact publisher, category, jurisdiction and edition.
- A clear route to the appropriate practice contact.
Keep departures current. When a partner moves, review their biography, team lists, article bylines and contact links together rather than leaving contradictory pages across the firm's website.
Authorship should mean something. A lawyer who reviewed a draft should be described as its reviewer, rather than silently becoming the author of work they didn't write.
Our guide to E-E-A-T for B2B companies explains the broader evidence principle. For law firms, the practical question is whether a reader can verify the expertise attached to a claim.
Do Chambers, Legal 500 and Doyle's help with AI visibility?
Legal directories and rankings provide outside information about a firm's capabilities. Their relevance depends on the practice, jurisdiction and sources used in the answers you want to influence.
Check the source, not the logo. Searchmaxxed's AI search work includes examining the pages answers cite, then connecting your website's claims to the evidence that actually supports them.
An American Bar Association article on AI search visibility recommends examining recognition sites, including Chambers, and researching the sources cited for legal prompts. That supports investigating them. It doesn't establish that every AI answer uses every directory.
| Source | What its methodology says | What to record on your website |
|---|---|---|
| Chambers | Reviews submissions and interviews references; ranks lawyers and departments | Ranked person or department, practice, jurisdiction, band and edition |
| Legal 500 | Uses submissions, market analysis, recent work and client or peer feedback | Exact ranked practice or person, jurisdiction, tier and edition |
| Doyle's Guide | Uses peer surveys and interviews; research varies by practice area | Exact category, market, year and recognised person or firm |
The distinction is commercially useful. A software buyer needs recognition relevant to technology work, not an award for an unrelated practice displayed without its qualifying category or date.
Doyle's adds a helpful detail. Listings within each ranking category appear alphabetically, so appearing first within that category doesn't mean a lawyer holds a higher ranking than the others.
Keep directory submissions with your firm's responsible team. Our website work can identify missing evidence and inconsistent claims; it doesn't mean we sign your firm up to directories.
What does our own research add?
Our research separates being retrieved from being cited. Searchmaxxed ran an Australian agency-query panel on 2 October 2026, with search enabled, to examine which retrieved results actually became sources in answers.
We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.
That's an agency sample, not a legal benchmark. For your firm, we need to inspect the actual answers before deciding which practice pages or outside sources deserve attention.
What advertising rules apply in Australia and the US?
Law firm AI-search content remains subject to the professional conduct rules applicable to the firm and its lawyers. Treat the website, biographies and promotional extracts as legal advertising work.
Searchmaxxed prepares the website content. Your firm's designated reviewer settles legal accuracy and advertising requirements before publication, including the wording of specialist credentials, rankings and any representative matter descriptions.
| Market | Official starting point | Practical content check |
|---|---|---|
| New South Wales | Law Society guidance on rule 36 | No false, misleading, deceptive, offensive or otherwise prohibited advertising |
| Queensland | Queensland Law Society's rule 36 | Same stated restrictions; specialist wording must meet the rule |
| United States | ABA Model Rule 7.1 and the relevant state's adopted rules | No materially false or misleading communications, including misleading omissions |
The Australian sources are explicit. Both restrict false impressions of specialist expertise and reserve “accredited specialist” wording for a solicitor accredited by the relevant professional association.
Check each applicable jurisdiction. The ABA Model Rules provide a model for state rules, not a single advertising code that automatically governs every US firm.
For national firms, keep a jurisdiction column in the content review sheet. Don't assume the NSW wording resolves every state's requirements or every practice area's additional restrictions.
A practical review sheet contains the proposed claim, its source, the exact approved wording and the person responsible for keeping it current when facts change.
Protect confidential material separately. Keep client names, privileged advice, transaction details and unpublished results out of research prompts unless the firm's approved systems and permissions permit that use.
For the SaaS example, public analysis can explain the team's approach without exposing a client's contracts. Anonymisation alone isn't a permission check.
What technical changes help ChatGPT and Google read your site?
Make public practice pages accessible, indexable and readable as text, then check crawler controls separately from model-training controls. Searchmaxxed checks these before adding more content.
The distinction is important. OpenAI's crawler documentation separates OAI-SearchBot, used for ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, used to collect material that may support model training.
OpenAI says the settings are independent. A firm can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot; its search-visibility decision does not require the same choice about training access to public pages.
Use this checklist with your web team:
- Check robots.txt and firewall rules for intended search access.
- Confirm important pages aren't accidentally marked noindex.
- Check canonicals, redirects and internal links after a migration or merger.
- Put substantive practice information in readable page text.
- Review page speed, mobile rendering and Core Web Vitals.
- Make structured data match the visible facts.
Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI features. No special AI schema is required.
Schema is structured data describing a page's facts. Use it to express real relationships between the firm, its people and content, rather than adding unsupported awards or expertise behind the page.
Keep private systems private. None of this requires opening client portals, document stores or restricted matter information to crawlers.
What would Searchmaxxed do first for a larger firm?
Searchmaxxed starts with the practice groups you want to grow, then builds or improves the pages those clients need. Technical fixes and evidence checks support that work.
For the SaaS expansion example, we'd examine existing technology, privacy and industry pages before proposing another article. A strong existing page may need a substantial rebuild rather than a competing URL.
The working sequence is straightforward:
- Agree the practice, industry and jurisdiction priorities with your marketing and practice leaders.
- Review search results, current pages and AI answers for those client questions.
- Check access problems and map each question to its appropriate page.
- Build the missing detail using your lawyers' verified expertise and approved evidence.
- Connect the pages, confirm the enquiry route and measure the released work.
Our AI search optimisation service combines SEO, technical SEO, GEO, AEO and LLM SEO. We implement the changes, rather than leaving your marketing team with another spreadsheet of recommendations.
The scope depends on the firm:
| Plan | Published delivery | Where it can fit a law firm |
|---|---|---|
| Growth System | 30 page releases monthly, technical work and AI visibility tracking | A firm with a defined practice expansion and enough approved content work |
| Agentic Search Engineering | 50 page releases monthly, industry pages, digital PR and link campaigns | A larger publishing requirement across competitive practices and industries |
| Custom & Enterprise | Scope can include multiple markets, dedicated engineering and custom reporting | Multi-office or international firms with complex websites and reporting needs |
A page release means an approved new page or substantial rebuild.
Volume needs a reason. Those commitments shouldn't turn into interchangeable pages for practice combinations the firm doesn't serve, or more legal drafts than its reviewers can handle properly.
Every managed package includes a plan delivered through weekly releases and a monthly decision memo. You own the website, repository, content and data.
How should a law firm measure AI search results?
Measure whether relevant answers name your firm accurately, then connect visits and enquiries to the practice groups you want to grow. Searchmaxxed tracks those signals alongside organic search.
Keep the categories separate:
| Signal | What it tells you | What it doesn't establish |
|---|---|---|
| Citation | An answer links to your content | The firm was recommended |
| Firm mention | The answer names the firm | The description is accurate or favourable |
| Recommendation | The firm is suggested for the stated need | A prospective client contacted it |
| Relevant enquiry | A prospect asked about work the firm accepts | The enquiry became an instruction |
| New instruction | The prospect engaged the firm | AI was solely responsible |
Use repeatable questions, with the same jurisdiction and industry context, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers. Record the date and cited URLs too.
Then inspect accuracy. A departing partner still named as your practice head is a correction task, not a visibility win to celebrate in the monthly report.
Keep commercial reporting grounded. Ask new prospects how they found you, and compare that answer with referral traffic, landing pages and the firm's existing intake records where available.
For the SaaS example, an enquiry about enterprise contracting belongs with the relevant practice. An unrelated consumer enquiry shouldn't inflate that team's search results.
Is Searchmaxxed right for your law firm?
Searchmaxxed fits mid-size and large firms that want SEO and AI-search improvements built, with direct access to the people doing the work. Legal expertise remains with your lawyers.
The strongest fit is practical. Your marketing team has priority practices, your lawyers can supply accurate material, and the business wants better pages rather than another monitoring dashboard alone.
| Good fit | Better handled another way |
|---|---|
| You want implementation across practice, industry and lawyer pages | You only need a tool to watch AI mentions |
| You can nominate legal reviewers and supply approved evidence | You want an agency to certify your legal advice |
| You need SEO and AI search managed together | You only need a directory submission service |
| You have substantial work across practices or markets | You need a single biography edited |
The law firm SEO agency guide covers provider selection separately. This article's job is to make the actual work clear before you choose who should do it.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT recommend a law firm?
Yes, ChatGPT can name firms in response to legal-service questions. Check the exact need and jurisdiction. A relevant recommendation matters more than a mention in an unrelated answer.
Does GEO replace SEO for law firms?
No. GEO adds AI-answer visibility to SEO. Google explicitly says its existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, so the work belongs together.
Do law firms need to allow GPTBot to appear in ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI separates GPTBot from OAI-SearchBot. The latter controls automatic search crawling; a firm's choice about training access can differ from its choice about search visibility.
Which legal directories should a firm prioritise?
Start with the sources cited for your target practices and jurisdictions. Check the relevant ranking category too. Chambers, Legal 500 and Doyle's are research candidates, not a universal submission checklist.
Can AI write our legal articles?
AI can help prepare drafts. Your lawyers still need to verify the law, jurisdiction, sources and claims, using tools and information permitted by your firm's policies.
How long does AI search optimisation take?
There isn't a verified universal timetable. The starting website, existing recognition, review capacity and work required differ by firm, so agree deliverables and compare repeated observations over time.
What should your firm bring to the first conversation?
Bring the practice groups you want to grow, the markets they serve and the website pages meant to win that work. Searchmaxxed can then discuss the required scope.
