AI search for SaaS means getting your software recommended when buyers describe a problem to ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. Those assistants can draw on product documentation, reviews and comparison pages to assemble a shortlist. Your job is to make the product's fit clear, support it with evidence, and measure whether the answers recommend it accurately. Start with the requirements that decide the sale. A vague category mention won't tell a procurement team whether your software works with its existing systems.

I'm Brenden House. I run Searchmaxxed, an SEO and AI SEO agency. We build the pages, fix the technical faults and track the answers that connect software searches with enquiries.

In summary

  • AI search for SaaS starts with a specific buying problem, then the product facts that answer it. Build around that fit.
  • Mentions, citations and recommendations mean different things. Track them separately, including whether the assistant gets your capabilities right.
  • G2, Reddit and comparison pages can supply evidence, but the sources vary by question and engine. Inspect the actual links.
  • Keep software documentation, integration pages and commercial pages consistent, especially when a feature changes. Old limitations can outlive the release.
  • Measure Australian and US answers separately. Then connect that visibility with qualified demos and pipeline rather than treating every mention as a sale.

How do AI assistants choose which software to recommend?

AI assistants can search for evidence about the buyer's requirements, then combine what they find into an answer. The exact sources and response vary. Searchmaxxed's AI search work connects those requirements to pages that explain the product accurately enough for a buyer to evaluate it.

OpenAI's search documentation describes rewriting a question into targeted searches, sometimes followed by more specific searches. That matters for software.

Consider this hypothetical request.

Recommend purchase-approval software for a manufacturer operating in Australia and the US, with NetSuite integration and separate approval rules for each subsidiary.

That's a category, an integration and an operating requirement in the same request. Each needs evidence. A homepage saying “simplify procurement” answers almost none of it, even if the product could handle the work without difficulty.

Query fan-out means breaking a question into related searches. Google's AI search guidance says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use it to explore subtopics and sources.

These are distinct products:

SurfaceWhat its own documentation saysWhat your SaaS team should inspect
ChatGPT searchCan rewrite questions and search again after reviewing resultsThe full recommendation and its supporting links
Gemini AppsMay show sources and related links; some responses have noneWhether links support the specific product claim
PerplexityIts search crawler surfaces websites; user requests can also fetch pagesThe cited page and the capability it supports
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeMay search across related subtopicsCoverage of the requirement, beyond the broad category

Sources: OpenAI, Google Search Central, Gemini Apps Help and Perplexity's crawler documentation.

Google's explanation covers AI Mode, rather than every answer in Gemini Apps. Treat them separately. Likewise, a response without visible sources tells you what the assistant said, not which pages caused it to say that.

Which sources matter: G2, Reddit or your own website?

All can matter, but each answers a different question. Your documentation explains capabilities. Reviews and community discussions describe experience, while comparison pages organise the choice around competing products and their limitations.

MarTech's SaaS AI search guide shows examples citing review platforms, Reddit threads and vendor-owned comparison content. Those examples establish possible sources, not a universal ranking formula.

SourceUseful evidenceWhat to check before acting
Product and integration documentationSupported workflows, setup requirements and current limitationsDoes it describe the live product and relevant plan?
G2, Capterra and TrustRadiusCustomer experience and category contextIs the review about your current product and target customer?
Reddit and specialist communitiesFriction, switching reasons and practical workaroundsIs the complaint still true after subsequent releases?
Comparison and alternatives pagesDifferences that determine a shortlistDo the claims link to current supporting material?
Partner documentationConfirmation of an integration's scopeIs it native, partner-built or dependent on custom development?

Searchmaxxed checks the sources behind the answers alongside the website itself, so a missing integration explanation doesn't become a generic instruction to publish more articles.

Find the specific gap. If the answer cites an outdated comparison, improve the current explanation on your site and identify the external correction for its owner.

What does our own citation research show?

Our research separates finding a page from choosing it as a source. The panel covered Australian agency searches on 2 October 2026, so its results describe that market rather than the software category.

We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.

That's Searchmaxxed's own measured panel. It's a snapshot. Its value here is the distinction between retrieval and citation, rather than a prediction of software recommendation rates.

A fetched page has cleared an access test; a cited page has become part of an answer. Neither observation alone proves a product recommendation.

What should a SaaS team change on its website first?

Start with the pages that establish whether your product meets a real buying requirement. Searchmaxxed builds product, industry, integration and comparison pages around those searches, with technical SEO and internal links supporting them.

Take the fictional purchase-approval product above. Its marketing page says it supports manufacturers, but the integration documentation only says “connect through our API”. The distinction matters immediately.

A native NetSuite connector and a custom API project create different implementation work, so the page must explain which option the product supports today.

Here is the working checklist for that example:

Buyer requirementPage that should answer itEvidence to includeReason to exclude the product
NetSuite integrationDedicated integration page linked to setup documentationSupported records, sync direction, dependencies and connector ownerThe requested workflow needs unsupported custom development
Separate subsidiary approvalsProduct workflow or enterprise use-case pageRules, permissions and examples of supported approval pathsThe product cannot separate the required approvals
Australian or US hostingPublic security and hosting summaryAvailable regions and the scope of each hosting claimThe required location is unavailable
Migration from an existing toolMigration guide linked from the comparison pageImport formats, exclusions and implementation responsibilitiesEssential history cannot transfer in the required form
Enterprise access controlsSecurity page linked to relevant documentationSupported sign-in methods, permissions and plan restrictionsA mandatory access requirement is absent

This is a planning example, not a client case or a claim about a particular vendor. Your product team supplies the facts.

Make each answer complete enough to quote

Keep the product name beside its capability and limitation, rather than leaving the qualification on another page that an assistant might never retrieve.

For example, if accurate:

Our purchase-approval software supports separate approval rules for each subsidiary. NetSuite connections require custom API development; we don't provide a native connector.

That answer loses unsuitable buyers. Good. It also saves your sales team a demo that would end at the integration question, regardless of how persuasive the rest of the presentation was.

Keep sensitive security documents behind the appropriate access controls, with an approved public summary explaining what procurement teams can request and what the product supports.

Our SaaS SEO strategy guide covers the wider page structure. Here, the priority is resolving the specific uncertainty that keeps your product out of an AI shortlist.

Can comparison pages help ChatGPT recommend your software?

Yes, vendor comparison pages can supply sources for software answers. MarTech's guide includes an example of ChatGPT citing a vendor's own comparison. The opportunity is concrete.

Searchmaxxed's Agentic Search Engineering includes comparison, industry and integration page families, so the product's differences have somewhere useful to live beyond a sales presentation.

For the purchase-approval example, compare implementation effort and subsidiary controls rather than assembling a table where your product somehow wins every row, including irrelevant features.

The useful comparison might concede that another product has the native connector while yours supports a different approval workflow. Name the trade-off.

Put a date beside the evidence, link to the vendors' current documentation, and distinguish a standard feature from an add-on or custom implementation requirement.

Our guide to comparison pages covers their structure in detail. For AI search, the test is whether a passage can answer the buyer's question without losing the qualification that makes it true.

What technical SEO does SaaS AI search need?

AI search needs accessible pages with useful text and consistent facts. Searchmaxxed handles crawl and indexing faults, rendering, internal links and structured data alongside content, so a strong integration answer has a route into search.

Start with access. OpenAI documents separate controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, which serve search and potential model-training purposes respectively. Its crawler guidance allows independent choices.

A training-crawler policy and a search-crawler policy therefore need separate consideration, especially when your security team has blocked AI bots as a single broad category.

Check the following:

  • Public product and documentation pages return usable content without a login or interactive session. Keep confidential material private.
  • Robots rules and the web application firewall permit the search crawlers you intend to support, using each provider's published verification guidance.
  • Important capabilities appear as readable text, rather than only inside screenshots, videos or interface demonstrations that require the visitor to operate them.
  • Internal links connect the product page to its integrations, security summary and comparisons. Each claim should have a clear route to supporting detail.
  • Canonicals and indexing settings point to the current pages. Resolve the conflicting claims.
  • Structured data describes the visible page accurately, without invented ratings or features. Google says its AI search features require no special schema beyond the existing SEO work that supports ordinary search results.

Schema helps describe a page. It cannot turn an unsupported integration into a supported one, and adding markup won't resolve contradictory product claims in your documentation or comparison copy.

How do you measure SaaS share of AI answers?

Measure recommendation coverage across a fixed set of relevant questions, with separate results for each engine and market. Searchmaxxed pairs AI-answer tracking with competitor measurement and commercial outcomes, rather than reporting mentions as revenue.

Separate the measures.

MeasureMeaningWhat it tells you
MentionThe answer names your productYour brand appeared, positively or negatively
CitationThe answer links to a sourceA page supports some part of the answer
RecommendationThe answer proposes your product for the requested jobYour product entered the shortlist
Accurate recommendationThe recommendation matches your actual capabilitiesThe shortlist represents a plausible sales opportunity
Qualified demo or opportunityA prospect meets your commercial qualification criteriaVisibility has a connection to potential revenue

A citation to your blog could support a recommendation for someone else's software. Read the answer. A favourable description can also be wrong about your product, which is why sentiment alone won't catch an invented enterprise feature.

Use the same questions before and after the change

Include category discovery, industry use cases, integrations, alternatives and procurement requirements. Separate branded questions from unbranded ones, because asking about your product already puts its name into the conversation.

For an illustrative test, take 20 questions and run each three times in one engine. That produces 60 responses. Recommendations in 15 responses give 25% recommendation coverage: 15 divided by 60.

Those are fictional numbers. The calculation demonstrates the denominator, not an industry target or a Searchmaxxed result. Record failed responses separately rather than counting them as recommendations or silently removing them.

Keep the prompt wording and test conditions consistent, including market, model or product version, search mode and whether the conversation starts without previous context.

Preserve the full answers. Then record which claim changed, which page supports it and whether the assistant still recommends your product when the buyer adds a harder requirement.

Our AI share-of-voice guide explains the broader measurement choices. Define your calculation before comparing dashboards; a share of brand mentions and a share of answers use different denominators.

Connect visibility with sales evidence

Review AI referral visits alongside qualified demos, sales notes and opportunities, without assigning unexplained enquiries to an assistant that you cannot identify.

Ask prospects how they found you. A buyer can encounter your product in an answer and return later through another route, so referral analytics won't tell the whole story.

The useful report joins the evidence. More accurate recommendations for a relevant use case are progress; more qualified opportunities from that audience make the commercial argument stronger.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search for SaaS?

AI search for SaaS is software discovery through assistants that answer buying questions and recommend products. It differs from adding a search feature inside your own application.

Does traditional SaaS SEO still matter?

Yes. Google's guidance says existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, including crawl access, internal links and content that answers the search.

Do I need G2 reviews to appear in ChatGPT?

G2 can provide supporting evidence, but the sources in software answers extend beyond reviews. Inspect your category's answers before treating one platform as a prerequisite.

Does Reddit control software recommendations?

No single source explains every recommendation. Reddit can reveal user experience, but answers can also cite product documentation, comparisons and other reviews depending on the question.

Can I block AI training while allowing ChatGPT search?

Yes. OpenAI documents independent controls for GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, allowing a site to distinguish potential model-training access from access for ChatGPT's search results.

How should Australian and US SaaS visibility differ?

Track each market separately, using realistic requirements for hosting, integrations and support. Keep the underlying product facts consistent, while making genuine market differences explicit on relevant pages.

How long does it take to improve AI recommendations?

There is no fixed timetable across these engines. Track the relevant page changes and repeat the same questions, separating crawler access from changes in the resulting recommendations.
