How did I choose them?
I tested every agency against the same five criteria, using only what each one publishes about itself:
- Presence: a named office or team in Australia that you could meet.
- Method: how they say they work, in their own words.
- Proof: case studies with numbers, which I quote as each agency's claims.
- Shipping: what they say they build and change, set against what they report.
- AI search: a named offer for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI answers.
I read every competitor page on 28 September 2026. I started from eleven national candidates and kept the eight that met all five, plus Searchmaxxed. This list is my own selection, and I run the agency at the top. It makes no claim to be a survey, an award or a measure of client satisfaction.
1. Searchmaxxed: best for founders who want weekly releases on a site they own
Searchmaxxed is the agentic SEO team I run. Our AI agents plug into your Search Console and GA4. Every week they scrape your competitors' sites and check what AI answers say about you. Then our Managed Search Loop picks the next best job.

How should you choose an SEO agency in Australia?
Choose the agency whose weekly work you can see and whose proof you can trace:
- Presence: Find a named office or team, then ask who works on your account day to day.
- Method: Ask what they'll build and fix each month. A report tells you what happened, while a release changes the site.
- Proof: Ask for the case study behind every number, and who did the work.
- Shipping: Ask to see a real change log from a current client, with dates.
- AI search: Ask which engines they check and what they change when you're missing. Our AI SEO agencies shortlist goes deeper.
- Ownership: Ask who owns the website, the code, the content and the data if you leave.
If you serve one city or region, see our local SEO page.

- Prosperity Media: Hourly billing, with entry-level local SEO from around $2,000 plus GST each month.[11]
- Impressive: Most businesses pay a performance-focused agency $3,000 to $15,000 monthly.[6] That covers more than SEO.
- Searchmaxxed: We quote each business after looking at the website, the market and the goals. Let's talk pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the best SEO agency in Australia?
It depends on the job. I'd pick Searchmaxxed if you want your site improved every week on a system you own, and I run it. For an SEO-only team at big-brand scale, StudioHawk fits.[1] For SEO and ads together, look at Online Marketing Gurus or First Page.[2][3]
How does Searchmaxxed's agentic SEO work?
Our AI agents plug into your Search Console and GA4. Every week they scrape competitors and check AI answers. The Managed Search Loop picks the next job. We ship page work on your Agentic Website and off-page work through the Off-Page Source Layer. A person checks every change before it goes live.
How much does SEO typically cost in Australia?
First Page says local businesses usually pay $1,500 to $3,000 monthly.[7] Prosperity Media's entry-level local SEO starts around $2,000 plus GST each month.[11] Searchmaxxed quotes after looking at your site and market, so let's talk pricing.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
Yes, when the searches you target bring customers. At Radiant Roof Repairs, SEO was the only marketing channel, and the business went from zero to more than $1 million a year. A page that answers a buying search keeps bringing in enquiries, and our SEO work builds for those searches.
Is SEO replaced by AI?
In my view, SEO still shapes what AI answers can find and repeat. StudioHawk puts it well: "SEO isn’t replaced by AI, it’s reshaped by it."[5] We do both through AEO and GEO.
Should I trust an agency that promises page-one rankings?
Treat any ranking promise as a contract term, and read the conditions. First Page ties its pay-on-performance model to agreed benchmarks, with exclusions.[7] SIXGUN says it doesn't focus on ranking promises.[8] We sell the weekly work and show you what it did.
Should I sign a 12-month SEO contract?
Sign for a length you're comfortable with, once you know what ships each month. StudioHawk says it has no lock-in contracts, and Impressive offers rolling terms.[5][6] Searchmaxxed offers monthly, six-month or 12-month terms, agreed on the call.
Who does the work at an SEO agency?
Ask before you sign. StudioHawk says you deal with SEO specialists instead of account managers.[5] First Page gives each client an account manager in Richmond.[7] At Searchmaxxed you talk to the people doing the work, and I approve what ships.
What should I own when an SEO engagement ends?
You should own the website, the code, the content and the data. With Searchmaxxed you own all of them from day one. Your Agentic Website lives on GitHub and Vercel, and it stays yours.
How long does SEO take to work?
First Page says most businesses see meaningful results between three and six months.[3] At Radiant Roof Repairs, three high-intent Gold Coast roofing searches reached number one within 90 days.
Do I need an SEO agency in my own city?
You need an agency that understands your market and its search results. SIXGUN works from Melbourne with businesses all over Australia.[8] We're a Queensland team working Australia-wide. A local office helps if you want to meet in person.
Is this list an independent ranking?
It's my own shortlist, and Searchmaxxed sits first because I run it. I judged every other agency on the same five criteria, using what it published on 28 September 2026.
