When ChatGPT gives wrong information about your company, save the answer, check its sources, and correct the public facts behind the error. Report the response too. Then repeat the original question in fresh conversations to see whether the correction holds. You control your website. You can also challenge inaccurate third-party pages, but you cannot edit ChatGPT's underlying model or dictate every answer it gives.

Find where the mistake starts. An outdated product page needs different work from an accurate page that ChatGPT misreads, even when the resulting false claim looks identical.

In summary

  • Start with the exact false claim and its supporting links, rather than rewriting your entire website because someone shared a worrying screenshot.
  • Separate stale facts, company confusion and unsupported conclusions. Each needs a different correction.
  • Publish the correct fact with its product, market and effective date. Keep legitimate differences between offers clear.
  • Report the specific error. Use the provider's official feedback channel while correcting the source material, rather than waiting for a support response before fixing your own pages.
  • Keep uncertain and missing answers separate from correct answers when you measure progress, so a disappearing fact cannot masquerade as a successful correction.

I'm Brenden House, founder of Searchmaxxed. Our AI search optimisation work connects clear company facts, technical SEO and answer tracking, so buyers can find and understand what you offer.

Why does ChatGPT give wrong information about my company?

ChatGPT can repeat outdated information, confuse similar companies or generate claims its sources don't support. Confidence proves very little.

An AI hallucination is an inaccurate or invented response that presents a claim as factual, even though the available evidence does not support it. OpenAI describes these errors, including fabricated facts and citations.

The cause matters. Check the source and the scope of the claim before deciding which page, document or public record needs attention:

What you seeWhat to investigateWhat needs fixing
A retired product appears as currentOld product pages, PDFs and third-party reviewsCurrent availability and clear retirement dates
Another company's owner appears beside your brandShared names, domains and parent-company relationshipsCompany identity and verified relationships
A source describes one plan, but the answer describes every planThe passage beside the citationProduct and plan boundaries
A claim has no supporting sourceSearch settings, conversation context and public evidenceEvidence gaps and the unsupported response
Only an internal conversation gets it wrongUploaded files, connected apps and saved contextThe internal source or conversation settings

Search-grounded answers use information retrieved from the web. Other answers rely on the model's learned information and available conversation context.

But the division has limits. Missing citations alone don't prove an error came from training data, and a search-enabled answer can still misinterpret an accurate page.

Searchmaxxed's entity mapping addresses the identity side: legal names, trading names, former names, products and parent relationships. Our entity SEO guide explains how those relationships connect, without treating every incorrect product answer as evidence that the engine has confused your company.

How do you find where the wrong answer came from?

Open each citation. Compare its wording with the false claim, noting what the source supports and which conclusions the answer adds without evidence from that page.

Keep the original answer. Correcting ChatGPT inside the same conversation changes the evidence you are trying to investigate, because your correction becomes part of that conversation's context.

Save:

  • Prompt and complete response
  • Date and time zone, product, visible model name, and whether search ran
  • Citations
  • Country context, language and relevant account settings
  • False statement, correct replacement and supporting evidence

Test each market separately. A product available in the US but unavailable in Australia needs a qualified answer, not identical wording everywhere.

OpenAI's search documentation explains how to open citations and the Sources panel. Its warning matters here: search results and citations can be incomplete or incorrect, so a link beside a statement does not settle its accuracy.

What if the cited page is already correct?

Check the scope. A sentence about an entry-level plan can become a false statement about the whole company when the answer drops the plan name or qualification.

Consider a hypothetical B2B SaaS company whose Enterprise plan includes single sign-on, or SSO. ChatGPT says the company doesn't support SSO, citing documentation about its Starter plan.

The documentation may be accurate, but the answer has dropped the distinction that matters to a buyer comparing those plans.

Rewrite the relevant passage so it states which plans support SSO beside the limitation, with links to the current feature table and setup documentation.

That is page work Searchmaxxed does: answer-first copy, product relationships and internal links. Publishing more generic brand content wouldn't resolve the missing distinction.

Can the source list tell you everything ChatGPT read?

No. Our own testing shows why the distinction matters: a result can enter the search process without becoming a source that appears in the answer.

We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.

Searchmaxxed ran that panel on 2 October 2026, using Australian agency-buyer questions rather than product-specific questions about SaaS companies or enterprise procurement requirements. It measured retrieval and source selection, not how often ChatGPT gets company facts wrong.

Start with visible citations. If none explains the mistake, search the exact false wording alongside your brand, former name and product name to investigate other public sources.

What should you change on your own website?

Correct the page that owns the fact, then align its related pages and structured data so they describe the same offer without conflicting qualifications. Keep product limitations visible beside the claims they qualify.

Searchmaxxed starts with a canonical fact record. It sets out the company's identity and offers, supported by documents the business can verify.

For the hypothetical SaaS example, the working record would look like this:

FieldExample entry
Incorrect answerThe company does not support SSO
Correct factThe Enterprise plan supports SSO; Starter does not
Evidence ownerProduct lead
Public sourceCurrent feature comparison and SSO setup documentation
ScopeNamed product, plan and supported markets
Effective dateActual availability date, confirmed by the product team
Website changesPut the plan distinction beside each SSO statement
Success checkFresh answers preserve the plan distinction and cite current documentation

This example is hypothetical. Apply the same structure to a manufacturer's product certification or a public-sector supplier's eligibility requirements.

Write a quotable answer. Give it a clear heading, a direct opening sentence and a dated source where the fact changes over time.

Then check the surrounding pages. Your homepage, product pages, integration docs and downloadable specifications should agree on the same fact, while preserving valid differences between versions and markets.

Label historical material clearly. An acquisition announcement can remain accurate history even when its leadership details no longer describe the current business.

Structured data, or schema markup, describes page information in a machine-readable format, helping a search engine understand the entities and facts on that page. It should match the visible facts, including the correct organisation and product relationships.

Google's AI search guidance says there is no special schema requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Clear text comes first.

What if a third-party website has the wrong information?

Request a precise correction from the publisher and supply evidence for the replacement. Their page still needs attention.

Give the publisher the exact passage and enough public evidence to replace it:

Page: [URL]

Incorrect statement: [exact wording]

Correction: [correct fact and effective date]

Evidence: [public source URL]

Please update the relevant passage and any summary that repeats it.

Your communications team should own that request. Searchmaxxed's on-site work gives them a clear public source to reference, while answer tracking shows whether the old page keeps appearing.

Keep criticism separate. A negative opinion and a false product specification need different responses, even if both make uncomfortable reading when they appear beside your company name.

For company confusion, compare records. Our brand SERP management guide covers the broader search results surrounding your name, including the pages buyers might read after they question an AI answer.

Wikidata can be relevant when an existing entry contains the wrong relationship. Our Wikidata guide for brands covers that separate decision; creating an entry isn't the first correction step.

How do you report incorrect AI answers to the providers?

Report the faulty response. Include the exact error and a reliable source that supports the correction, choosing a formal legal channel when the issue warrants that response.

These official routes address different products. Report each faulty product separately.

ProductOfficial routeWhat to include
ChatGPTThumbs down beneath the response; select the relevant issueFalse claim, correct fact and source link
ChatGPT safety or legal concernSelect “Safety or Legal concern”, or use OpenAI's content-reporting formConversation evidence and the specific concern
Google AI OverviewsThumbs down, then “Report a problem”Incorrect passage, company identity and supporting source
Gemini Apps“Bad response”; add a reason and details where availableExact error and evidence; options depend on account type
PerplexityFlag icon below the answer, or a support ticketQuery URL, error description and expected result

Feedback has a role. OpenAI says its Model Quality team may review reported domains and apply filters or other measures against unreliable sources.

That still doesn't make a report an edit button for the underlying model. Keep correcting the source material while the provider considers your report.

Protect confidential information. Google's Gemini guidance says feedback includes the associated conversation, which can include uploaded files and content from connected apps.

For fabricated allegations involving safety, security incidents or legal misconduct, preserve the evidence and involve your legal and communications teams. Searchmaxxed handles the search work, not legal representation.

Do crawler settings or indexing requests fix the answer?

Crawler access helps search systems reach corrected pages; it does not determine how they interpret the text or which details they include in answers. Searchmaxxed checks the technical side too.

Keep the controls separate:

ControlWhat it affects
OAI-SearchBotOpenAI crawling for ChatGPT search
GPTBotCrawling of content that may support model training
Googlebot and search preview controlsAccess and eligibility for Google Search, including its AI features
Website firewall or CDNWhether permitted requests can reach the content

OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot settings are independent. You can permit search crawling while declining GPTBot crawling for training.

Check more than robots.txt. A permitted crawler can still meet a firewall block, an inaccessible document or a page whose important text never renders properly.

For Google, inspect the corrected URL in Search Console and request indexing where appropriate. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, and repeated requests won't speed it up.

That's a crawl window. It does not establish when an AI answer will change, and neither indexing nor a crawler visit proves the answer is now accurate.

How do you know the correction worked?

Repeat the original question under comparable conditions and score the specific fact. Track whether the answer states it correctly, gets it wrong, expresses uncertainty or omits it.

Keep every category visible in the results, including answers that avoid the disputed subject entirely instead of explaining the product capability accurately to buyers. If an answer stops mentioning SSO altogether, the false statement disappeared, but the buyer still cannot confirm whether the product meets their requirements.

RecordWhat it tells you
Source correctedThe public page now contains the right fact
Source fetched or indexedA search system has accessed or indexed the page
Corrected source appears in an answerThe answer references the updated evidence
Answer states the fact correctlyThe buyer receives an accurate explanation
Buyer responseSales or support reports whether the confusion continues

Choose a fixed question set around the disputed fact, including a direct question and a natural product-comparison question. Keep Australian and US tests separate where availability differs.

Use fresh conversations. Check memory, custom instructions and connected sources rather than assuming that a new chat removes every form of personalisation.

OpenAI's memory documentation explains those controls. Record any model or setting change beside your results so the comparison remains understandable.

Set a review schedule based on the harm. Check a live procurement problem more often than an outdated founding-year answer, and keep testing after the first correct response.

Searchmaxxed tracks AI answers alongside the website changes. The useful outcome is a buyer getting the correct product facts without your sales team having to repair the explanation afterwards.

Is Searchmaxxed right for fixing your company's AI answers?

Searchmaxxed fits companies that need the underlying SEO and website changes, alongside tracking of what AI answers say. It suits recurring factual confusion across products or markets.

Searchmaxxed is a good fit ifLook elsewhere if
You need SEO and website changes alongside AI-answer trackingYou want strategy advice with no changes to your site
Your product facts conflict across pages or marketsYou only need your own team to correct one stale page
You need clearer public evidence for your productsYou need legal representation or a provider to remove an answer

Our AI search optimisation service covers plain facts, matching structured data and AI-answer tracking. We build the page changes and technical fixes rather than stopping at a list of errors.

Growth System includes AI visibility tracking alongside ongoing page releases. Agentic Search Engineering adds comparison, industry and integration page families, with tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

Custom & Enterprise can include multiple markets, dedicated engineering and custom reporting. For a complex product catalogue, that means agreeing the scope around the facts and pages that need attention.

You may not need us. If your team controls the single stale page causing the problem, fixing it and checking the subsequent answers may be enough.

We also cannot rewrite a provider's underlying model or act as your legal representative. A dangerous false allegation needs the appropriate response alongside any search corrections.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tell ChatGPT the correct information about my business?

Yes, within your conversation. That supplies context for later replies there; it does not establish that other users will receive the corrected answer.

Does a wrong answer mean ChatGPT invented the information?

No. An answer may repeat an inaccurate source, confuse companies or misread a correct passage. Identify which happened before deciding what to change.

How long does it take to correct ChatGPT about a company?

There is no fixed correction deadline. Source updates, crawling, retrieval and answer generation are separate stages, so track each rather than promising a date for everyone else's answers.

Will schema markup fix the wrong answer?

Schema can clarify information that already appears on your pages. It cannot replace correcting the text, and Google requires no special schema for its AI search features.

Should I block GPTBot to stop incorrect answers?

Blocking GPTBot controls future training-related crawling, not the accuracy of an existing answer. Treat training permissions and search access as separate decisions.

Why does ChatGPT describe my company differently to different people?

The prompt, available sources and conversation context can differ. Check the settings too, including memory and connected sources that might change what information the assistant can use for that particular conversation.

Can Searchmaxxed remove a false AI answer?

Searchmaxxed works on your public sources. Providers control their outputs and reporting decisions; our work does not give us a removal switch for a false statement inside someone else's answer.

Bring the answer and evidence. We can discuss whether the problem calls for a focused website correction or ongoing AI search work across your products, pages and markets.
