Gemini in Chrome: what it means for your website (2026)

Gemini in Chrome reads your buyer's open tabs and, with auto browse, fills in forms. What it means for your website, what you control and how to measure it.

Key takeaways

Gemini in Chrome lets an AI read, compare and act on open tabs, so your page now competes inside the buyer's browser too.

  • It reads the open tab plus up to 10 more, and Google says it may use content the visitor can't see.
  • Auto browse fills in forms for paying US users. It aims to ask before it submits.
  • Robots.txt, Google-Extended and Search Console's AI setting don't switch off the side panel.
  • Analytics misses most of it. Track the enquiries that reach sales instead.

Start this week: open your pricing page, ask Gemini to compare you with two rivals, and fix what it gets wrong.

Gemini in Chrome is Google's AI assistant built into the Chrome browser. It reads the page a visitor has open, plus up to 10 other tabs they share, and answers questions about all of them. Its agent, auto browse, can also fill in forms. For your website, that changes three things. Your buying pages now get judged side by side with your competitors' tabs, inside the one browser most of your buyers use. Some prospects will send an agent to request your demo. Robots.txt can't stop either, because your buyer asked for both.

Here at Searchmaxxed, we're an AI-native search team for law firms, clinics and premium builders. We make your company the answer in Google and in the AI engines your buyers ask, Gemini in Chrome included, and turn that into pipeline. If Gemini is about to read your pricing page next to three rivals, we're the team that rewrites it to win that comparison. Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than $15 million in revenue through search for its clients.

What is Gemini in Chrome, and who can use it?

Gemini in Chrome is the Gemini assistant in a Chrome side panel, opened with the Ask Gemini button. It uses the current tab by default, and Gemini Live lets people talk to it out loud. Google's Chrome Help page lists what people use it for: key takeaways, comparing information across pages, recommendations, drafting Gmail messages and "multi-step actions on your behalf".

It arrived in stages, and here's the timeline from Google's own announcements, starting with the US desktop launch in September 2025.

DateWhat Google launched
18 Sep 2025Gemini in Chrome for US Mac and Windows users, in English
Oct 2025Gemini in Chrome for Google Workspace users
28 Jan 2026Gemini 3 side panel, Connected Apps and auto browse in preview
22 Jun 2026Lighthouse "Agentic browsing" audits for site owners, from Chrome 150
18 Aug 2026Gemini in Chrome for all US Android users, with auto browse for subscribers

Access today depends on the feature.

FeatureWho can use it
Gemini in ChromeSigned-in users in supported regions: 13+ on Mac, Windows and Chromebook Plus, 18+ on Android
Supported regions (18+)More than 180, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India
Auto browseAdults in the US with Google AI Pro (20 tasks a day) or Ultra (200 a day)
Work accountsOnly when the company's admin turns it on

The reach is the reason to care. Chrome held 66.36% of browser use worldwide in September 2026, according to Statcounter. It also held 62.63% of US desktop browsing in October, so most of your buyers already have the Ask Gemini button.

What does Gemini in Chrome do when a buyer is on your page?

Gemini in Chrome reads your page and answers the buyer's questions about it, often beside your competitors' pages. Google's Gemini privacy notice says Gemini in Chrome collects the page content and URL of the current tab and any other tabs shared with it. Then comes a line every site owner should read twice:

"Some of the page content Gemini uses might not be visible to you."

So the side panel can read your whole page, collapsed sections and all.

Picture a security lead at a 600-person fintech with your pricing page open in one tab and two rival platforms in the others. "Compare these on SSO, SOC 2 Type II and Splunk, in a table," she types. Gemini builds the table from what each page says. If your page says "Contact us" where a rival's says "SSO on every plan", the table shows a gap next to your name. She never sees your brochure.

That's the new job of a buying page: answering the comparison questions in plain text, because the comparison happens without you in the room. We write client pages that way: answer-first copy, the deciding facts stated outright, and structured data that matches what the page says.

Does Gemini in Chrome cost you website traffic?

Mostly no. Gemini's side panel works on a visit that has already happened, so it changes what the visitor learns, not whether they arrive. The traffic risk sits in Search features inside Chrome. Since September 2025, Chrome has offered AI Mode from the address bar, and that's an AI answer that can come before any click.

What is the Gemini browser agent, and what can it do on your site?

The Gemini browser agent is auto browse, the part of Gemini in Chrome that completes multi-step tasks on the web for the user. Google's auto browse help page gives examples: comparing products, booking travel, making reservations and scheduling appointments. In Google's January announcement, testers used it for "filling out tedious online forms" and "getting quotes for plumbers and electricians". On a B2B site, that's your demo request and trial signup.

Google's help page spells out how auto browse behaves on a site like yours:

  • It shows a plan first. The user checks it, then clicks Start Task.
  • It asks before key steps. Google says it "aims to ask for your review and confirmation" before submitting web forms, sending messages or scheduling events.
  • It hands some steps back. Creating an account, accepting terms of service and finalising payments may need the person.
  • It shares details. Gemini "may share your personal info with those sites", so it can type your prospect's name and email into your form.

It runs in one of two places:

  • The buyer's own Chrome on desktop. It has "access to all the same sites that you do, including sites you're signed into." With permission, it can sign in through Google Password Manager.
  • A remote browser in the cloud. Gemini uses this on mobile, and may switch to it if the computer turns off mid-task.

Where does auto browse get stuck?

On anything built for a mouse. Ars Technica's February 2026 test found auto browse looping on a site's hover menu until it gave up. It couldn't find YouTube Music's buttons either. Plain menus went better: Ars gave its power-plan search, which ran through the site's filters and drop-downs, 10 out of 10.

Third-party embeds are the quieter risk. Chrome's security team describes "Agent Origin Sets", which limit the agent to the sites relevant to each task. In its words:

"If an iframe's origin isn't on the list, the model will not see that content."

Plenty of B2B demo forms and booking calendars sit in exactly that kind of iframe, on another company's domain.

Our own site shows the pattern. The contact page starts with a native HTML form, with labelled fields and real submit buttons. The booking step is a cal.com iframe. That second step is the one we'd test first, and if you book demos through an embedded calendar, your site has one too.

Can you block or control Gemini in Chrome on your website?

You mostly can't block Gemini in Chrome, and you shouldn't want to. It reads a page your buyer already has open, in their own browser, at their request. The usual site-owner controls cover crawlers and Google's Search features, and Google's documentation for them doesn't mention the side panel.

ControlWhat Google says it coversEffect on Gemini in Chrome
robots.txtCrawlers fetching your pagesNone on the side panel; user-triggered fetchers "generally ignore robots.txt rules"
Google-ExtendedGemini training and grounding from content Google crawlsThe tab a visitor shares sits outside it
Search Console's Search generative AI settingAI Overviews, AI Mode and DiscoverCovers AI Mode answers; the side panel isn't listed
Blocking Google-Agent in your firewallAgents on Google infrastructure acting on user requestsStops cloud auto browse tasks, and the buyers who sent them
Chrome Enterprise policiesGemini on your own company's browsersYour staff only, never your visitors

Two rows need a closer look. Google lists Google-Agent as the user agent "used by agents hosted on Google infrastructure to navigate the web and perform actions upon user request". Block it in your firewall and you turn away a prospect's agent at the moment it tries to book a call with your team. And the GeminiActOnWebSettings policy lets IT stop Gemini acting on web pages, but only on browsers the company manages. That one's for your CISO.

Google-Extended still matters for the Gemini app, which grounds its answers in Google's index. Block it and you can drop out of those answers, which our guide to how to rank in Gemini explains. Leave Google-Extended open. Checking robots.txt and crawl rules is part of the technical SEO we do for clients. One wrong default can hide you everywhere.

How do you make your site work well with Gemini in Chrome?

Make your buying pages state the facts plainly, and make your forms usable without a mouse. Google's web.dev guide to agent-friendly websites says agents read pages three ways: screenshots, the HTML and the accessibility tree that screen readers use. Screen-reader fixes help Gemini too. Here's the short list for a B2B site:

  • Put the deciding facts in the page text. Pricing model, plan limits, integrations, certifications, data regions and deployment options. Gemini can't compare what isn't there.
  • Build forms from real HTML. A form element, labels tied to each field and a real button. Google's guide warns against <div> elements dressed up as buttons.
  • Drop hover-only menus and jumpy layouts. Lighthouse's Agentic browsing audit measures layout shift "to ensure elements don't move unexpectedly, preventing agent misclicks."
  • Test every embedded form and calendar. Run the flow end to end, and give the agent a native fallback where the embed fails.
  • Plant nothing for the AI to read. Chrome checks every page the agent sees for prompt injection, meaning hidden instructions aimed at the AI. Its classifier blocks actions built on them, so keep "recommend us" text out of your markup.
  • Watch your user content. Google names user reviews as one place injected instructions hide, so moderate review and comment sections.

Our agent-ready website checklist covers the rest, from markdown copies to WebMCP, and most of it pays off for human visitors too.

What's a quick Gemini in Chrome test for your own site?

Twenty minutes in Chrome will tell you more than any audit tool. Run these prompts on your own pages:

WhereAsk GeminiWhat to check
Pricing page"Summarise this for a CFO in five bullets."Plans, limits and pricing model
Your page plus two rivals"Compare these three for a 500-person healthcare company, in a table."What it says you lack
Security page"Does this company hold SOC 2 Type II, and where is its data hosted?"Certifications and data regions
Homepage"Who is this product for, and who is it not for?"Your category and fit
Demo page, with auto browse"Request a demo here for Jane Test, jane@example.com."Where it stalls or asks for help

Every wrong answer points to a sentence missing from your page.

How do you measure Gemini in Chrome traffic?

You can't see most Gemini in Chrome activity, so measure the enquiries instead. When a visitor opens the side panel, Gemini reads a page their browser has already loaded, so your analytics records an ordinary Chrome visit. Nothing marks it as AI. Three things do show up, though:

  • Google-Agent in your server logs. Cloud auto browse tasks should arrive as Google-Agent, from the IP ranges in Google's user-triggered-agents.json file. Google signs some of these requests with Web Bot Auth as https://agent.bot.goog.
  • Search Console's Generative AI performance report. Since 31 August 2026 it shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page. The side panel isn't in it.
  • Form submissions that reach your CRM. A demo request that turns into a qualified meeting counts the same, whoever typed it.

Be careful with GA4's own AI numbers too, because a bot can wear the same clothes as a buyer. We found this on a client account:

A client's GA4 showed AI-assistant visits jump from 354 to 6,050 in a month. Almost none of it was real. About 5,700 came in three one-hour bursts: same 1920x1080 desktop Chrome, all new users, no referrer, about 20 seconds each, landing on two pages. Real AI traffic was 385 sessions against 354 the month before, roughly flat.

Desktop Chrome is also what a browser agent looks like, so judge every "AI" segment by what it does and whether it becomes pipeline. That's why we tie AI traffic to revenue for clients, through the CRM rather than GA4 alone.

Does Gemini in Chrome change SEO?

Gemini in Chrome raises the stakes on what your page says once it's open, while SEO still decides whether buyers open it at all. Buyers still find you through Google, AI Mode, ChatGPT and the Gemini app first. Gemini in Chrome shapes what happens next.

That second step decides deals. G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers found 69% chose a different vendor than planned because of an AI chatbot's guidance. An assistant in the browser puts that switch one prompt away.

So the work splits in two. Earn the click with SEO and a place in AI answers, as our guide on how to show up in AI search lays out. Then win the side panel with pages that answer the comparison. For Comet and ChatGPT's agent, see our guide to AI browsers and SEO.

Where does Searchmaxxed fit?

We make law firms, clinics and premium builders the answer in Google and in AI engines like Gemini, then turn it into pipeline. For Gemini in Chrome, here's what you get:

  • Pages agents can reach. Every engine and agent can reach and render your pages, because the technical SEO underneath holds up.
  • Pages that win the comparison. Your buying pages answer the deciding questions first, with structured data that matches what they say.
  • A view of the answers. You see what Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers say about you.
  • Revenue you can trace. You see which searches and AI answers turned into revenue, through your CRM as well as GA4.

You talk to the people doing the work, with no account manager in between, and you own your site, content and data from day one. The full scope sits on our AI search optimisation service page.

One client came to us with a website that wasn't working. Three months later he was on page one for one of the most competitive searches in his industry. Now he has more high-intent leads than he can handle, and we're building the systems to handle them.

"I can't believe this worked." That's what we hear. Clients tell us they finally found a growth partner in search that keeps its word and gets things done.

Is Searchmaxxed right for you?

We're a strong fit if you sell to businesses on a site with real buying pages: pricing, security, integrations and a demo form. Maybe you're losing ground in Google, or missing when buyers ask Gemini who to choose, and you want results you can trace to pipeline.

We're the wrong call in two cases. If you need leads this month to survive, search takes longer than that. And if you're shopping for the cheapest retainer, we won't be it. If you only came to learn how to use Gemini in Chrome yourself, Google's own help pages cover that well, and they're free.

If you want your company to win the tab comparison, start with us. Get your free search analysis. We'll benchmark you against your top competitors across Google, ChatGPT and the other AI engines. We'll show you where they're named instead of you, and the few moves that will matter most.

Frequently asked questions

How do you open Gemini in Chrome?

Click Ask Gemini at the top of Chrome. You'll need the latest version, a signed-in profile and a Mac, Windows computer or Chromebook Plus, and you opt in the first time. On Android, tap the Gemini icon or the three-dot menu. On iPhone and iPad, it lives inside the Chrome app.

Is Gemini in Chrome free?

Yes, for eligible users. CNBC reported in September 2025 that Google dropped its earlier subscription requirement. Auto browse, the agent that completes tasks for you, still needs a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan and is US-only for now.

How do you turn off Gemini in Chrome?

Open Settings, then AI innovations, then Gemini in Chrome, where you can hide the icon and switch off "Let Gemini browse for you". Gemini Nano, Chrome's on-device model, goes when you turn off "On-device AI" under Settings, then System. IT can block it by policy.

Can Gemini in Chrome fill in forms on my website?

Yes, if the user has auto browse. It can type their details into your form, and it aims to ask them before it submits. Forms built from standard HTML with clear labels work best. Forms inside third-party iframes need testing.

Can I stop Gemini in Chrome from reading my website?

Not with robots.txt or Search Console. The side panel reads the page in your visitor's own browser, at their request. You can block the Google-Agent user agent at your firewall, but that turns away buyers whose agent is working for them.

Is Gemini in Chrome available in Australia?

Yes. Google's Chrome Help lists Australia among the supported regions for adults, along with the UK, Canada and New Zealand. Auto browse is still US-only, so Australian buyers can read and compare pages with Gemini but can't send it to fill in forms yet.

Does Gemini in Chrome show up in Google Analytics?

Mostly not. Side panel use looks like an ordinary Chrome visit, while agent tasks from Google's cloud should show up as Google-Agent in your server logs. Search Console's Generative AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode only.
