Relevance engineering improves how search systems find, select and present information that answers a person's question. For AI search, that includes passages inside pages, the facts behind them and the sources an answer cites. The practical goal is straightforward. Make your business a relevant answer when someone searches for a product, service or problem you can solve.

What changes on your website? Better definitions help. Better product pages, clear integration limits and evidence that supports a recommendation do considerably more.

In summary

Relevance engineering connects search technology with useful evidence.

  • It extends SEO into retrieval and generated answers; crawl access, internal links and useful pages still matter.
  • AI systems can search related questions, so a broad category page may miss the detail behind a buyer's request.
  • Embeddings help explain semantic matching. A similarity score alone doesn't predict whether an engine will recommend you.
  • Measure source appearances, accurate recommendations and enquiries separately. They answer different questions.

What is relevance engineering, and where did the term come from?

Relevance engineering has roots in search software engineering, while iPullRank developed a specific framework for SEO and AI visibility. Those histories overlap. They aren't identical.

OpenSource Connections published a definition on 8 December 2020, describing work that tunes search engines around business needs. The work spans ingestion through ranking. It predates the current AI-search discussion.

Mike King introduced iPullRank's framework at SEO Week in 2025. In its introduction dated 8 May 2025, iPullRank calls it “the art and science of improving visibility for any search surface”. Its framework combines information retrieval, user experience, artificial intelligence, content strategy and digital PR.

Credit the framework to iPullRank. Calling it the first use of the phrase would erase the earlier search-engineering work.

Searchmaxxed sells SEO and AI search optimisation. Our work covers the practical overlap: technical fixes, answer-first content, consistent company facts, links, digital PR and measurement against business results.

How does relevance engineering differ from SEO and GEO?

Relevance engineering puts extra attention on how a search system selects evidence, rather than treating a page's ranking as the whole result. Good SEO already covers much of that. The difference is emphasis and measurement, not permission to abandon the basics.

DisciplineMain questionWork that answers it
SEOCan people find this page through search?Crawl access, indexing, content, internal links and authority
GEODoes a generated answer include this business or its information?Clear facts, useful passages, supporting sources and answer tracking
Relevance engineeringWhy would a retrieval system select this information for this request?Intent analysis, passage structure, retrieval tests and evaluation
Internal search engineeringDoes our own search return useful results?Index configuration, query handling, ranking models and relevance testing

GEO means generative engine optimisation. Our GEO explainer covers that category without requiring you to learn retrieval mathematics first.

SEO has long involved meaning and intent. Reducing it to keyword counts makes the newer label look more different than the work warrants.

Google's AI-feature guidance says: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”. Existing SEO fundamentals still apply.

That matters when you buy the work. At Searchmaxxed, GEO and AEO sit inside our managed search packages alongside technical SEO, content and implementation, rather than replacing those foundations.

How do retrieval, embeddings and passages affect AI search relevance?

AI search relevance depends on matching a request with useful evidence, then selecting information for an answer. The exact process varies by engine. The following concepts explain the work without pretending every platform shares the same machinery.

Retrieval and query fan-out

Retrieval finds candidate information for a request. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics and sources.

Consider a hypothetical enterprise SaaS buyer asking for procurement software that connects to an existing finance system and supports regional data hosting. That's a detailed request. A useful answer might need integration documentation, hosting terms, implementation requirements and a product comparison, rather than another general article about procurement.

This is where page planning changes. Searchmaxxed builds comparison, industry and integration pages within Agentic Search Engineering, so specific buying questions have somewhere useful to land.

Embeddings and semantic search

An embedding is a numerical representation of content that lets software compare patterns of meaning. Semantic search finds related information beyond exact word matches.

OpenAI's retrieval documentation demonstrates this using vector stores, which index data for similarity searches. The principle is useful. ChatGPT's ranking formula remains private.

A SaaS page about automated supplier checks might relate to a search for vendor onboarding, even when the wording differs. Exact details still matter. A product name or integration identifier can distinguish the right answer from a similar but incompatible product.

Microsoft's hybrid-search documentation explains why its system combines full-text and vector searches. Keyword search can help with precise names and product codes, while vectors find conceptual matches. Hybrid search uses both. Microsoft uses BM25 for text ranking, a lexical approach that scores matching terms, alongside vector search and a method that combines their results.

Passages, reranking and generation

A passage is a section of content that answers part of a question, such as whether your software supports a particular integration. Reranking means reassessing candidate results before choosing their order.

Retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, gives a language model retrieved information to help produce an answer. Retrieval and generation are different jobs. Finding your page doesn't mean the final answer will name your business, cite your page or preserve every condition you stated.

Structure helps make those conditions explicit. Put the product name, supported capability, limit and evidence together, rather than scattering them between a homepage slogan and a buried PDF.

Searchmaxxed's on-page work includes answer-first copy, FAQs and internal links. Those changes help people understand your offer.

Entities and corroboration

An entity is a distinguishable thing, such as a company, product or person. Clear relationships prevent confusion between a parent company, product brand and discontinued offer, especially when several names appear across the same website.

A procurement page should identify which product supports the integration and which documentation proves it. That distinction can change a shortlist. Searchmaxxed maps names, brands, products and supporting evidence; our entity SEO guide explains the identity work in detail.

What does a useful passage look like on an enterprise website?

A useful enterprise passage names the product, answers a specific question and preserves the conditions that affect suitability. It gives a buyer something to check. A claim about flexibility gives a procurement team no basis for deciding whether the product works with the systems it already runs.

Take the hypothetical procurement product above. Assume its team has verified every detail in the revised example before publication; these are illustrative facts, not a Searchmaxxed client case.

VersionExample passageWhat the buyer can establish
Vague“Our platform connects your procurement operation with the systems you rely on”.Little about compatibility
Specific“The procurement platform exports approved invoices to the finance system through its API. Supplier records require a separate import. Deployment depends on your finance-system version”.The supported operation, a limitation and a dependency

The next improvement is specificity. Replace “the procurement platform” and “the finance system” with verified product names, then link the version requirements beside the claim.

Keep hosting claims equally precise. If regional hosting covers application data but excludes a support service, the page must explain that distinction where it states the hosting option.

Manufacturers can apply that test to material compatibility and operating conditions, keeping the specification and its limits together wherever a buyer finds them. Public-sector pages need equally clear eligibility and service boundaries. The subject changes; the editorial test doesn't.

Searchmaxxed builds and improves these page types through on-page SEO, content and technical work. You supply the product truth. We turn it into pages that answer the searches your customers make, with schema and internal links that support the same facts.

What does a relevance engineering team do in practice?

A relevance engineering team diagnoses why useful information fails to appear, changes the content or technical setup, and checks what happened afterwards. The output should include working pages. Reports alone leave the problem intact.

Searchmaxxed's managed search process connects search evidence with implementation on a website the business owns. In practical terms, that means:

What the team findsWhat changesWhat the business gets
Buyers search for an integration the site barely explainsAn integration page with requirements, limitations and documentationA page that can answer a compatibility question
Important content depends on scripts that fail to renderRendering, crawl and indexing fixesSearch engines can access the actual information
Pages disagree about a product or serviceCopy and structured data aligned with verified factsFewer conflicting claims for buyers to resolve
A comparison page hides the reason to choose either optionA fair comparison with explicit fit and exclusionsA useful shortlist decision
Visibility rises but enquiries don'tLanding-page and conversion-tracking reviewA clearer diagnosis than another visibility chart

Our managed packages include continuous diagnostics and implementation, with a monthly decision memo that explains what moved and what we plan to change. We check the live work after release. Search Console, GA4, competitor evidence and AI-answer observations then inform the next changes.

The website, repository, content and first-party data belong to the client. That ownership matters for enterprise teams. Search work should leave you with usable assets, rather than a dashboard you lose when a contract ends.

Do you need vector scoring tools?

Vector scoring can help investigate whether passages address the same topic as a query, giving your team a specific question to examine before editing. Treat it as a diagnostic. Cosine similarity measures vector alignment, not product suitability, factual accuracy or the likelihood of an enquiry.

A test also depends on the embedding model, query wording and passage boundaries. Change those and you change the experiment. If a team proposes a relevance score, ask what model produced it and which observed outcome the score helps explain.

Our published Searchmaxxed scope covers SEO and AI-search implementation and measurement. It doesn't promise a proprietary embedding score. The useful test is whether the work improves the answers people can find about your business.

How do you measure relevance engineering without confusing visibility with results?

Measure appearances, accuracy and business outcomes separately, using repeatable searches and a record of the pages you changed. A citation is one observation. A citation alone doesn't show whether the answer recommended your product or a prospect contacted you.

Our own ChatGPT research shows why that separation matters. On 2 October 2026, we ran an Australian agency-search panel:

We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.

The panel shows a gap between retrieval and source inclusion, but its agency-search figures cannot stand in for results in your own SaaS category. It doesn't prove why a particular source survived, or establish a universal citation rate for other markets.

ObservationRecordWhat it tells you
Retrieval, when the tool exposes itSearch result or fetched URLThe system encountered a source
CitationExact linked URL and surrounding answerThe answer attributed information to a source
Brand recommendationBrand name, use case and qualificationThe answer proposed the business for a need
AccuracyClaim checked against current product documentationWhether the recommendation describes the offer correctly
Enquiry or saleLanding page, conversion and available CRM evidenceWhether discovery contributed to a business result

Keep the question set stable. Record the engine, date, market and search setting, then repeat the checks rather than treating a favourable screenshot as a trend.

For teams selling in Australia and the US, evaluate each market separately. Hosting options, terminology and eligibility can differ. Combine them too early and a correct recommendation in one market can hide a misleading answer in the other.

Searchmaxxed tracks those observations together. The business question remains the same: are relevant people finding an accurate reason to choose you?

Frequently asked questions

Who created relevance engineering?

iPullRank's Mike King introduced its SEO and AI-search framework in 2025. The broader phrase predates that framework. OpenSource Connections published an explanation of relevance engineering for search systems in December 2020.

Is relevance engineering replacing SEO?

SEO's foundations still apply. Google still recommends its existing SEO practices for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Relevance engineering adds a focus on how systems retrieve and select information, so teams examine generated answers alongside the rankings they already monitor.

What does a relevance engineer do?

A relevance engineer improves how information matches a searcher's needs, whether that means tuning search software or making a product page more useful. Internal search can require software changes. For external AI visibility, it includes content structure, technical access, entity clarity and testing what answers contain.

Do embeddings tell you whether ChatGPT will cite a page?

Embedding similarity can indicate semantic alignment, but it cannot establish whether ChatGPT will cite a page. Search selection and answer generation involve further decisions. Test actual answer behaviour alongside any similarity analysis.

Does relevance engineering require special schema?

Google says no special schema or AI text file is necessary for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Existing structured data should match visible content. Clear copy and accessible pages remain the starting point.

Is a relevance engine the same as relevance engineering?

A relevance engine is software that selects or orders information, often inside a website or application. Relevance engineering is the work of improving relevance. Clarify the problem before commissioning either.

What should you do next?

Start with a product or service buyers struggle to find, then compare its page with the questions they ask before choosing it. Bring that gap to Searchmaxxed. We'll discuss the SEO and AI-search scope needed to turn it into useful pages and measurable work.
