Share of search is your brand's percentage of searches across a defined group of competing brands. Divide your branded search volume by the total for that group, including your brand, then multiply by 100. It measures relative interest, not sales. For marketing leaders, its value is spotting whether customers increasingly look for your company by name, before that interest reaches the revenue report.

I'm Brenden House, founder of Searchmaxxed. We do SEO and AI SEO, including the pages, technical fixes and measurement that connect search visibility to enquiries.

In summary

  • Share of search compares demand for brands, not their Google rankings.
  • Google Trends provides relative interest; keyword tools provide estimated volumes. Keep their calculations separate.
  • A rising share can hide falling demand. Report your brand's volume beside its share.
  • Les Binet's research supports its use as a leading indicator, with limits that matter for enterprise reporting.
  • AI share of voice measures appearances in answers. It doesn't replace branded search or revenue measurement.

What does share of search tell an executive?

Share of search shows how much attention your brand attracts through searches compared with the competing brands you include. Start with the comparison group.

A branded search names a company or one of its identifiable products, while a non-branded search describes a need without naming the supplier.

Consider enterprise software. Searching for the company by name shows existing awareness; searching for manufacturing compliance software shows a problem someone wants solved.

Searchmaxxed builds industry, comparison and integration pages around the problems a buyer describes, whether or not they've heard of your company before. Branded demand can help assess whether more buyers remember the company afterwards, alongside enquiries and sales.

Don't confuse them. Ranking for a category query is visibility; someone searching your name is brand interest, regardless of which result they click next.

Les Binet found that share of search correlated with market share across automotive, energy and mobile phone handsets, and could lead market-share changes.

The IPA published his findings on 14 October 2020, following his EffWorks presentation. He focused on behaviour:

“what people are actually doing online, rather than what they say they are doing”.

The IPA reported a lead time of up to a year for cars. That's category-specific. It isn't a forecast horizon for enterprise software.

Binet also identified limitations: search interest can be negative, while price and other factors affect whether interest becomes a purchase from that brand.

Extra share of search means share of search minus share of market. A positive gap can indicate growth potential, but it doesn't predict the size of your next sales increase.

For a B2B board report, test the relationship against your own opportunity and revenue history before treating it as a forecasting input. Keep later periods aside to check whether the relationship holds beyond the data used to find it.

The commercial evidence comes first. A brand-interest chart cannot establish how much revenue Searchmaxxed's work caused.

How is share of search different from market share and share of voice?

Share of search measures searches for brands; market share measures sales within a defined market. Share of voice needs a channel.

MetricWhat you divideWhat it answers
Share of searchSearches for your brand ÷ searches for all included brandsAre people looking for us relative to competitors?
Market shareYour sales ÷ total category sales, using revenue or units consistentlyHow much of the market do we sell?
Advertising share of voiceYour advertising spend ÷ category advertising spendHow much of the advertising investment is ours?
Organic search visibilityA tool's ranking-based visibility calculationHow visible are our pages for the selected keywords?
AI share of voiceYour brand mentions ÷ all tracked brand mentions in a defined answer sampleHow often do AI answers name us relative to others?

Multiply each share ratio by 100 to express it as a percentage. Ranking tools use their own visibility methods; check the definition rather than treating every percentage as equivalent.

Define the sales market too. Comparing your Australian software revenue with worldwide category revenue gives you the wrong answer, however accurate both figures are.

Searchmaxxed tracks rankings and AI visibility separately because a page appearing in Google and a brand appearing in an answer are different observations. Neither reveals competitors' sales.

Calculate share of search by dividing your brand's search volume by the combined volume for your brand and its selected competitors. Match markets and periods.

Share of search (%) = your branded searches ÷ all included branded searches × 100

This fictional enterprise SaaS example illustrates the calculation using teaching inputs, rather than measured customer results or a benchmark for your business.

Brand in the same software categoryIllustrative monthly searchesShare of search
Your company2,00020%
Competitor B4,00040%
Competitor C3,00030%
Competitor D1,00010%
Total, including your company10,000100%

Your calculation is 2,000 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 20%.

Keep the label honest. This is share among the selected brands, not the whole software industry, unless your competitor set genuinely covers that market.

In a spreadsheet, put the brand volumes in cells B2:B5. Use =B2/SUM($B$2:$B$5) and format the result as a percentage.

Percentage formatting handles the display, so don't multiply that spreadsheet formula by 100 as well or the answer will be a hundredfold too large.

Compare your brand and competitors in the same Google Trends view, then divide each brand's interest score by the combined scores for each period. Treat the result as an estimate.

Google explains that Trends uses sampled, normalised data. Its scale runs from 0 to 100, not from zero searches to a hundred searches.

Exporting doesn't reveal hidden search counts.

Set the comparison before exporting

  1. Choose direct competitors in the same product category, including your own brand.
  2. Set a common country, date range, category filter and search type for every brand.
  3. Decide whether to compare search terms or brand topics. Record the choice.
  4. Check related searches for irrelevant meanings, product aliases and spelling variants.
  5. Export the comparison and retain the settings with the file.

Separate Australia and the US. Google's documentation says identical interest scores across regions need not represent identical search volumes.

Averaging Australian and US percentages into a global figure without appropriate weights gives the markets arbitrary influence over your result, so keep them separate.

Google's terms and topics documentation explains the distinction. Terms match wording; topics group concepts.

That choice changes coverage. Comparing a broad company topic against a narrowly qualified competitor term can make the first brand look stronger than it is.

Calculate within each period, then smooth

For a fictional period with brand scores of 20, 40, 30 and 10, your estimated share is 20 ÷ 100 = 20%.

Repeat the ratio for each time interval. Then use a rolling average of those shares if you want a smoother chart, labelling the window you chose.

There's a distinction worth preserving. Averaging period shares measures average relative position; dividing summed indices produces a differently weighted summary, not necessarily a true search-volume share.

Keep brands on a common scale. Separately downloaded charts each have their own scaling, so adding their raw indices can produce a convincing but meaningless percentage.

If your comparison needs separate batches, rescale them through an overlapping reference brand. Document the method, or use comparable keyword-volume data instead.

Watch the small numbers. Google says low-volume terms can appear as zero, and small spikes can reflect statistical noise rather than genuine interest.

For a young venture-backed company, that may make Trends unsuitable, but an empty chart isn't proof that nobody knows or searches for the business.

How do keyword tools change the calculation?

Keyword tools provide estimated search volumes. Use the same provider, market, period and keyword rules for every brand.

Consider Google Keyword Planner. Its historical-metrics documentation says average monthly searches include close variants and normally use a 12-month average.

That isn't last month's demand. For monthly movement, use comparable month-specific historical data where available, rather than repeatedly comparing rolling annual averages.

Then build the keyword list. Include the company name, accepted variants and identifiable products, while keeping unrelated searches out of every brand's total.

For SaaS, separate these groups:

Query groupExample patternTreatment
Brand and productsCompany name; unique product nameInclude under a documented ownership rule
Buying researchBrand + pricing, alternatives or integrationReport as a buyer-intent subset if useful
Existing customersBrand + login, support or documentationKeep visible separately; don't silently remove them
Employment and investorsBrand + jobs or investor relationsAnnotate when they explain movement
Ambiguous namesAn everyday word shared with the brandInspect relevant queries and document exclusions

That subset is different. Don't rename it total share of search or compare it directly with an unfiltered historical series.

Avoid double counting close variants that a provider already groups. A query naming competing brands also needs an explicit allocation rule before you add up category demand.

Google says search-volume statistics are rounded, so preserve that uncertainty instead of presenting a long decimal that suggests more accuracy than the source provides.

Search Console has another job. It doesn't supply competitors' totals, so it cannot calculate market-wide share of search by itself.

Can share of search rise while demand falls?

Yes. Your share rises when competitors' combined search demand falls faster than yours, even if fewer people search for your company.

Return to our SaaS example:

MeasurePeriod APeriod BChange
Searches for your brand2,0001,800Down 10%
Searches for the whole selected set10,0006,000Down 40%
Your share of search20%30%Up 10 percentage points

The arithmetic is correct. Calling it growing brand demand would be wrong: the company gained relative share while losing searches in absolute terms.

Searchmaxxed's competitor measurement belongs alongside Search Console, GA4 and sales feedback, because relative brand interest answers only part of the business question.

Keep both findings visible:

Brand demand fell while relative share rose in a shrinking category. Check buyer-intent queries and enquiries before deciding what the movement means.

Use your own inputs. You can copy the tables into a spreadsheet and replace the inputs without changing the underlying formula.

What can make enterprise share of search misleading?

Share of search becomes misleading when search behaviour and the business market don't line up. Check what drove the searches.

Kantar's analysis, published 11 August 2025, shows why keyword selection matters. The ranking of brands changed.

Enterprise teams have additional choices to make about product families and procurement cycles before comparing their search interest with the market they sell into.

  • Rebrands and acquisitions: decide how old names, product names and parent companies map to the business. Restate history or mark a break.
  • Multi-product companies: compare the relevant product family, rather than an entire conglomerate against a specialist supplier.
  • Software outages: inspect login, status and support searches before celebrating an unexpected increase.
  • Manufacturing: account for searches for replacement parts and manuals. Those can reflect the installed base rather than new purchasing interest.
  • Public-sector organisations: name the service or awareness question being measured. A statutory service doesn't necessarily have a meaningful commercial market share.
  • Long procurement cycles: compare interest with opportunities and completed sales separately. Don't force them into the same reporting month.

Searchmaxxed can build the industry pages, technical improvements and clearer product information those investigations identify. Contracts need sales evidence.

What should go into the monthly executive report?

Report share of search with brand demand, the comparison definition and a short explanation of what changed. Then state the decision.

Keep these fields together:

Report fieldWhat to record
Market and categoryCountry, product scope and included competitors
Measurement definitionData provider, terms or topics, exclusions and aggregation method
Current movementBrand volume or index, category movement, share and percentage-point change
Possible explanationLaunch, outage, acquisition, campaign or changed keyword coverage
Business checkRelevant enquiries, opportunities and revenue, with their own dates
DecisionThe page, technical fix or further investigation justified by the evidence

The accompanying SEO KPIs for executives guide covers the wider reporting framework. Share of search belongs within it, not above it.

Searchmaxxed's managed work includes competitor measurement in a monthly decision memo and a plan delivered through weekly releases. Custom & Enterprise can include custom reporting and original first-party research.

Scope comes first. Agree the study's scope explicitly.

How does share of search relate to AI share of voice?

Share of search measures people looking for brands; AI share of voice measures brand mentions within a defined sample of AI answers. Keep them separate.

An AI answer can introduce a supplier before someone knows its name. A later branded search may follow, but those observations don't establish a causal connection.

The source matters too. Google's Trends documentation says it excludes internal searches made by AI Mode and AI Overviews.

A Trends chart therefore isn't a count of Google's AI recommendations, and certainly isn't a count of recommendations from ChatGPT or Perplexity either.

Track the observations side by side:

PatternWhat to investigate
Brand searches rise; AI mentions stay flatWhether existing awareness exceeds the evidence AI answers find about the company
AI mentions rise; branded searches stay flatWhether those mentions reach relevant buyers and lead to enquiries
Both rise; enquiries stay flatWhether the website answers product, implementation and purchasing questions clearly

Our AI share of voice guide explains the answer-sampling method. Name exactly what you're counting.

Searchmaxxed's Agentic Search Engineering includes answer tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. The work also includes comparison, industry and integration page families, so measurement can lead to changes buyers actually see.

Is Searchmaxxed right for your company?

Searchmaxxed fits companies that want SEO and AI search measurement connected to implemented website work.

Searchmaxxed is a good fit ifLook elsewhere if
You want SEO and AI search measurement connected to website improvementsYou want strategy advice with no changes to your site
You need product, industry and comparison pages built or improvedYou only need a share-of-search spreadsheet
You want search evidence considered alongside enquiries and salesYou need audited market-share research rather than SEO implementation

Growth System includes 30 page releases a month; Agentic Search Engineering includes 50, with technical work separate from that commitment. New pages or substantial rebuilds count.

Custom & Enterprise can cover multiple markets, dedicated engineering and custom reporting. That is the relevant conversation for an enterprise team needing a defined share-of-search study alongside ongoing search work.

You own the site, repository, content and data. Brenden sets the direction, reads the weekly evidence and writes the money pages, without an account-manager relay.

Our enterprise SEO service connects that work to the searches your customers make. It suits teams ready to improve product, industry and comparison pages, rather than receive another report without implementation.

If you only need a spreadsheet, start with the calculation above; if you need audited market share, you'll need category sales research as well.

Public-sector teams need a different test. Define the service-access or awareness outcome first; commercial brand-share language may not fit the organisation's purpose.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good share of search?

There is no universal good percentage. Your competitor set, category and starting point determine what the figure means, so track consistent comparisons over time.

Does the denominator include my own brand?

Yes, include your brand. Dividing by competitors alone measures your demand relative to theirs, rather than your share of the combined total.

Is share of search the same as branded traffic?

No, they measure different things. Branded traffic counts visits reaching your website; share of search compares searches for your brand against searches for competing brands.

Can Google Search Console measure share of search?

Not by itself. Search Console reports your site's search performance, including impressions and clicks, but doesn't provide the competitor demand required for the denominator.

How do I find a company's market share?

Divide its sales by total sales in the defined market, matching periods and using revenue or units consistently. Reliable category sales data is essential.

Does more share of search mean more revenue?

Not necessarily. Check absolute demand, search intent and sales, because increased support queries or a shrinking category can produce a higher share without revenue growth.

If you want that measurement connected to enterprise SEO and AI search work, bring your markets, competitors and website to the conversation.
