An AI agent harness is the software around a model that runs tools, manages memory and keeps a task moving through repeated steps. The model proposes an action. The harness executes it. For AI search, that surrounding software helps determine which pages an agent can retrieve, what evidence reaches the model and whether another search happens.
That matters to your business. A buyer's assistant needs more than a convincing homepage when it checks integrations, manufacturing capabilities or eligibility requirements before recommending a supplier.
In summary
An AI agent harness turns model output into actions, including searches that can bring your company into an answer.
- The model generates responses and tool requests; the harness runs those tools within configured limits.
- Tools, memory and permissions change what an agent can find and use, even when the underlying model stays the same.
- Retrieved, cited and recommended mean different things.
- Your website supplies evidence to this process. It doesn't need its own agent harness to appear in AI search.
What does an AI agent harness actually do?
An AI agent harness manages the execution loop around a large language model, or LLM. It connects model decisions to tools and returns their results.
Think about a research request. A model can generate a search query, but something outside the model must send that query, collect results and return them for another decision.
That is the harness's job.
Google Cloud's explanation describes a runtime that handles tool invocation, memory, state persistence and safety controls. Its definition separates the model's reasoning from the software needed to carry out actions.
| Component | What it does | Why a marketing leader should care |
|---|---|---|
| Instructions | Define the task and expected output | A request for documented capabilities differs from a request for popular brands |
| Execution loop | Calls the model, runs a tool and returns the result | The agent can investigate a missing fact rather than stop at its first answer |
| Tools | Connect to search, browsers, files or APIs | Available tools determine which information sources are reachable |
| Context and memory | Keep relevant information available across steps | Earlier buyer requirements can inform later comparisons |
| Permissions and sandbox | Limit access and isolate execution | An agent may be unable to open restricted material or take an action |
| Verification and traces | Check outputs and record activity | Developers can inspect the searches, errors and evidence behind a response |
A sandbox is an isolated execution environment. A trace records a run. Neither makes a claim correct by itself, but both help developers control and inspect what happened.
For Searchmaxxed, the relevant work is on the evidence side: technical SEO, clear product pages and AI search optimisation. We improve what buyers and search systems can find about your company.
How is a harness different from an LLM agent framework or scaffolding?
A harness runs an agent, while an LLM agent framework gives developers building blocks for creating agent applications. The terms overlap in real products.
Agent scaffolding is a looser label. It usually means the supporting code, instructions and environment around the model, rather than a separate technology you must buy.
| Term | Plain meaning | Example of its role |
|---|---|---|
| Model | The system generating responses and tool requests | Proposes a search for integration documentation |
| Agent | The working application pursuing a task | Researches suitable software for a buyer |
| Harness | The runtime around the model | Executes searches, maintains state and enforces permissions |
| Framework | Reusable components for developers | Helps assemble tools, workflows and agent behaviour |
| Scaffolding | General supporting structure | Instructions, task files and code supporting a run |
| Orchestration | Coordination of steps or agents | Sends different research tasks to different workers |
Google Cloud distinguishes frameworks from harnesses by their emphasis on building applications versus running agents. Don't treat that as a rigid product taxonomy.
Anthropic's Agent SDK makes the overlap clear. It is a library that provides the tools, agent loop and context management behind Claude Code, according to its documentation.
The naming matters less than access. If your customers research suppliers through an agent, ask which search tools and sources that application can actually use before changing your website.
How do tools, memory and loops change an agent's answer?
Tools change what an agent can access, while memory keeps useful information available as the task continues. The loop lets each result inform another action.
Here's a hypothetical B2B SaaS example. A buyer wants software with a named integration and a particular hosting region, then asks an assistant to identify products meeting both requirements.
The assistant could:
- Search for products in the category.
- Retrieve their integration documentation.
- Check hosting-region information against the buyer's requirement.
- Search again where a claim lacks support.
- Return suitable candidates with source links, or identify unresolved questions.
The sequence isn't universal. It illustrates how a tool result can change the next step instead of merely decorating an answer the model has already written.
Memory needs some care here. A context window is the information available to the model during a call, not an unlimited record of everything it has ever seen.
A harness can save notes or task state for later retrieval. Compaction shortens accumulated context. It doesn't rewrite the model's training or preserve every detail automatically.
Anthropic's long-running agent research found that compaction alone was insufficient for its coding task. The handovers made a difference.
That was a coding experiment. The principle relevant to search is narrower: what survives into the next model call depends partly on the surrounding software, not just the original page.
Searchmaxxed addresses the publisher's part through clear facts, connected pages and structured data matching the visible content. Repeating a vague product claim everywhere adds nothing useful.
How do agents built on harnesses browse and choose sources?
Search-enabled agents can issue queries, process results and search again before producing an answer. Their available tools and configured restrictions help define the sources they can consider.
The vendor documents describe different implementations. They do not establish a single source-selection formula shared by every assistant.
| Documented system | What its documentation says | What that means for your site |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI web search API | Reasoning models can search, analyse results and decide whether to keep searching | A follow-up query may seek a specific fact rather than your main category page |
| Gemini API with Google Search | The model can generate queries and return source-linked answers | The page supporting a claim matters, not only the brand name |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Responses may use query fan-out across related topics and data sources | Supporting pages can answer parts of a larger question |
Sources: OpenAI web search, Gemini grounding and Google Search Central.
Grounding means connecting an answer to external information. Query fan-out means issuing related searches to answer different parts of a question.
There are practical limits. OpenAI's API supports domain filters, for example, so a developer can restrict which websites its search tool uses when handling a request.
Your content cannot override that setting.
Also separate APIs from consumer products. An API feature tells you what developers can build; it doesn't prove that every ChatGPT or Gemini conversation uses those settings.
Searchmaxxed's AI search optimisation work combines technical SEO, answer-first content and tracking of what AI answers say about a business. The target is evidence a relevant search can find and use, rather than a particular harness brand.
Why can an agent find your page but leave it out of the answer?
Retrieval puts a page into consideration; citation means the final response identifies it as a source. A recommendation goes further by naming a business as suitable.
They are different observations.
OpenAI's source documentation explicitly distinguishes consulted URLs from inline citations. Its complete source list can contain more URLs than the answer cites.
Our own research shows the gap. On 2 October 2026, we measured a panel of Australian agency questions:
> We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.
That was a single-day snapshot. It isn't a universal citation rate for enterprise software, manufacturing or another market, and it doesn't isolate the effect of the harness alone.
The practical distinction still holds.
| Observation | What it establishes | What it doesn't establish |
|---|---|---|
| Retrieved | The search process returned the page | The final answer used its claims |
| Cited | The answer linked to the source | The business was recommended |
| Recommended | The answer named the business as suitable | The reader enquired or bought |
Searchmaxxed's AI answer tracking belongs alongside enquiries and revenue measurement. A citation is useful evidence of visibility, but it isn't a sale.
What does an agent harness mean for your website and AI SEO?
Your website needs to make relevant claims findable, readable and supportable; it doesn't need to run the buyer's agent. The harness belongs to the application doing the research.
Start with the actual requirement.
For the SaaS example above, a broad integration claim leaves the agent guessing whether the connection is native, API-based or delivered through another service.
Compare these hypothetical page treatments:
| Buyer requirement | Unhelpful page treatment | Evidence worth publishing |
|---|---|---|
| Named integration | A logo in a rotating banner | Integration page describing supported functions and limitations |
| Hosting region | “Built for global teams” | Product documentation stating available regions and applicable conditions |
| Manufacturing capability | A general capabilities slogan | Product specifications with materials, tolerances and relevant certification scope |
| Public-sector eligibility | “Trusted by government” | Current eligibility details supported by the relevant official record |
Only publish what is true.
Searchmaxxed connects that content work to the way customers search for your products. We build product, industry, comparison and integration pages around real searches, then connect them through internal links and fix technical access problems.
For Google, the eligibility rule is explicit. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Google's guidance also calls for important information in text and structured data that matches visible content. It says no special AI schema or new machine-readable file is required for those features.
That is Google's rule. Other applications can have different access paths, so an API-connected agent is not necessarily limited to what Google has indexed.
Our agent-ready website guide covers the website checks in detail. The separate guide to how AI agents shortlist suppliers follows the buyer's decision.
Here, the distinction is architectural: your pages supply evidence, while the buyer's application controls the tools and process used to retrieve and assess it.
Is Searchmaxxed right for this work?
Searchmaxxed fits companies that need their products, services and evidence found through Google and AI search. This is SEO and website work, not a harness-development engagement.
| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
|---|---|
| You need SEO and AI search work implemented on your website | You want strategy advice with no changes to your site |
| You need product, comparison and integration pages that support customer searches | You need a developer to build an agent harness |
The scope matters.
| Your requirement | Relevant Searchmaxxed scope |
|---|---|
| Improve existing search pages and technical foundations | Growth System combines page releases, technical work, schema, internal links and AI visibility tracking |
| Cover complex product comparisons and integrations | Agentic Search Engineering adds comparison, industry and integration page families, plus broader AI answer tracking |
| Work across markets or with complex reporting needs | Custom & Enterprise can include dedicated engineering, custom reporting and original first-party research |
Those plans include implementation. You own the website, repository, content and first-party data, and the work connects search visibility to the enquiries your company actually needs.
If your immediate requirement is selecting a model, building an agent runtime or governing internal tool permissions, start with your engineering and security teams.
A harness explainer shouldn't blur that boundary.
Frequently asked questions
What is a harness for an AI agent?
An AI agent harness is the runtime around a model that executes tools, maintains task state and controls repeated calls. The model proposes actions; the harness carries them out within configured permissions.
Which AI agent harness is best?
There is no best harness for every task. Compare the tools, model support, permissions and memory your application needs, then test whether it completes representative tasks correctly within your operating limits.
Is Claude Code an agent harness?
Claude Code includes an agent harness. Anthropic's Agent SDK exposes the same tools, agent loop and context management for developers building their own applications.
How do you build your own AI agent harness?
Start with a model, task instructions and a limited set of tools. Add the execution loop, state storage, permissions and tests needed for the task before expanding its access or responsibilities.
Is MCP the same as an agent harness?
No. Model Context Protocol, or MCP, standardises connections to tools and data. A harness can use MCP while separately managing the agent's loop, memory and permissions.
Does my company need a harness to appear in AI search?
No. Your website provides information to search systems and agents; it doesn't have to run them. Focus on accessible pages that answer relevant questions with supportable facts.
What should you do next?
Start with a real customer search and the evidence required to answer it. Identify the missing pages.
For Searchmaxxed, that means technical SEO and content work tied to your products, market and enquiries. Bring us the website and the searches you want to win.
