Key takeaways
Zero-click searches end most US Google searches, but for B2B they move the shortlist rather than kill pipeline.
- 68.01% of US Google searches sent no click in January to April 2026, and 64% of Australian mobile searches end the same way.
- Definitions lose the click first. Branded and buying searches still send clicks.
- B2B buyers mostly purchase from the vendors they had in mind before searching, so a mention in the answer carries real weight.
- Judge search on AI Overview impressions, AI recommendations, brand searches and pipeline, alongside clicks.
Your first job: find out which vendors the answers name for your top searches.
A zero-click search is a search that ends without a click to any website, because Google's AI Overview, a featured snippet or ChatGPT answered it. In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches ended that way, according to SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb data. For B2B, that sounds like a disaster. Zero clicks rarely means zero influence, though, because your buyers still read which vendors the answer names, and that list becomes their shortlist.
We're Searchmaxxed, an AI-native search team. We make law firms, clinics and premium builders the answer in Google and in the AI engines their buyers ask, then turn that into pipeline. In a zero-click market, we do two jobs for you: get your name into research answers, and win the click on buying searches.
What is a zero-click search?
Zero-click searches, also called no-click searches, are searches you finish on the results page or inside an AI chat without visiting a website. SparkToro calls the wider trend the zero-click web.
Google answers most of them itself. Its tools include AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets (position zero), knowledge panels, People Also Ask, local packs and instant results like weather. Voice assistants work the same way. Outside Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini write the whole answer themselves and link out to only a handful of the sources they read.
Zero-click SEO is the work of getting your facts, your page or your company name into those answers, whether or not anyone clicks. Some teams call it zero-click marketing. It overlaps almost completely with AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation).
There's a reporting catch. A zero-click search sends no request to your website, so your analytics never records it, and Wikipedia notes standard pageview tracking can't detect them.

How many searches are zero-click in 2026?
About half to two thirds of Google searches end without a click. SparkToro and Similarweb put the US figure at 68.01% for January to April 2026, while iPullRank found 46.96% across 10.2 billion searches. The gap comes down to method.
| Study | Data and period | Zero-click finding |
|---|---|---|
| SparkToro with Similarweb, Jun 2026 | US Google searches, mobile and desktop, Jan to Apr 2026 | 68.01% sent no click, up from 60.45% in 2024 |
| iPullRank with Datos, Jul 2026 | 10.2 billion searches, Oct 2024 to Dec 2025 | 46.96% sent no click |
| iPullRank with Datos, Jul 2026 | Australian mobile searches, same period | 64% sent no click |
| Bain & Company, Feb 2025 | Bain research plus a survey of 1,117 consumers, Dec 2024 | About 60% end without visiting another site |
| Similarweb, Jun 2026 | US desktop searches, Jan to Apr 2026 | Only 20.4% sent a click to a non-Google site |
Each study uses its own panel, device mix and definition of a click, so the four figures were never going to line up. iPullRank's panel is 94.5% desktop. SparkToro weighted its 68.01% figure two thirds mobile and one third desktop, Similarweb notes, to match how people use Google.
Here's the twist that matters for B2B. The panels disagree on which device is worse: iPullRank found mobile far more clickless, with US mobile at 66% and Australian mobile at 64%. Similarweb's read of its own panel says desktop is worse, with just 20.4% of desktop searches reaching an outside site. Similarweb argues B2B research happens mostly at a desk, so check your own device split in Search Console before you quote either number.
The direction, at least, isn't in doubt. Every panel shows the click getting rarer, and iPullRank found the rise came almost entirely out of organic clicks while ad clicks held steady. Australians on google.com go without a click about 6 points more often than on google.com.au, probably because new answer features land there first.
And the next wave is still coming. AI Mode carried just 0.34% of Google searches in SparkToro's early-2026 data, though Google said at I/O 2026 it had passed 1 billion monthly users. Similarweb measured AI Mode sending a click on only 1.6% to 2.5% of queries, against 17% to 19% for classic Google.
Are zero-click searches bad for B2B companies?
They cost you traffic, but they needn't cost you pipeline. In B2B, most deals go to vendors the buyer already had in mind, and zero-click answers are now where that list gets made.
Bain's March 2025 research found B2B click-through rates falling as much as 30% in some categories, software included. The same piece reports that 85% of B2B buyers purchase from their "day one" list, the vendors they had in mind before searching.
Put those two facts side by side. Fewer clicks are the symptom. The expensive problem is a buyer who reads an AI answer, sees three of your competitors and builds a day-one list without you.
G2's April 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers found 51% now start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. Chatbots were the top source shaping shortlists. And 69% chose a different vendor than they'd planned because of what a chatbot told them.
That cuts both ways. In G2's survey, 85% of buyers said they think better of a vendor when a chatbot recommends it. And the clicks that do arrive are strong: Orbit Media's study of 97 B2B sites found AI tools sent just 0.5% of visits. Those visitors converted to leads at about three times the rate of other organic traffic.
Which B2B searches still send clicks?
Branded searches, high-intent buying searches and searches for things Google can't summarise still send clicks, while quick definitions and how-to questions lose them first. SparkToro names branded, local and high-intent transactional searches as categories that still benefit from SEO.
iPullRank adds a useful detail. Only about 14% of Google clicks landed on a site named in the query, so 86% were discovery clicks to sites the searcher found there. Those clicks go to whoever ranks.
Some sites hold their clicks. Google intercepted 30.5% of the searches that would have sent Wikipedia a visit, against 12.7% for GitHub and 16.5% for LinkedIn. In iPullRank's reading, brands built on products, tools, communities or proprietary data are more insulated.
A worked example. Say you sell email security to mid-sized companies. The queries below are our illustrations, so run your own through Search Console before you plan anything.
| Search type | Example query | What usually happens | What to win |
|---|---|---|---|
| Definition | "what is DMARC" | Answered on the page | Be the source the answer quotes |
| How-to | "how to stop phishing emails" | Answered, few clicks | Be the fix the answer names |
| Shortlist | "best email security for 500 staff" | AI answer lists vendors | Be on that list |
| Comparison | "[you] vs [competitor]" | Answer, then clicks to check | Own the comparison page |
| Pricing | "[product] pricing" | Mostly clicks | The click and the demo |
| Brand | "[company] SSO setup" | Clicks to you | A page that answers it |
Look at where the money sits. The bottom three rows carry most of your pipeline, and they still earn clicks. The top three rarely send traffic, yet they decide whether a buyer ever reaches the bottom three with your name already in mind.
What is a zero-click SEO strategy for B2B?
A zero-click strategy plans two outcomes per search: your name in the answer where searchers stop, and the click where they keep going. For B2B, that means five moves.
1. Sort your searches into answer searches and click searches
Export 12 months of queries from Search Console and tag each one as an answer search or a click search. Then open the Generative AI performance report, which since 31 August 2026 shows every site's AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page. Rising AI impressions with flat clicks? That's an answer search.
2. Put the answer first on every research page
Open every research page with the answer, not a warm-up. Put plain facts and numbers in the first two sentences so an AI answer can lift them whole, and name your company there. "Acme is an email security platform for mid-sized companies" gives an engine a line to repeat, while "a leading provider of solutions" gives it nothing. Add structured data that matches what the page says.
3. Get named on the pages the answers trust
A zero-click answer leans on a handful of outside pages, and our own ChatGPT panel showed how concentrated that handful gets:
Across 900 ChatGPT answers about Australian agencies, a single third-party "best agencies" site was cited in 168 of them. The next three were a second listicle, Semrush's agency directory and Clutch. If you want to be recommended, the job is getting onto the handful of pages the model already trusts.
Each engine has its own favourites, too:
Perplexity cited a review directory (Semrush Agencies, Clutch, DesignRush and the like) in 36 of 44 agency answers. ChatGPT did it in 20 and Claude in 15. One agency's Clutch profile had six reviews and was cited 20 times.
So find the review sites, lists and trade press that AI answers cite in your category, and earn your place on them honestly. In G2's survey, 45% of buyers called review-site citations the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer.
4. Make the buying pages win the click
Comparison, pricing, integration and product pages carry the pipeline, and buyers still click them. Make each click count. A buyer who clicks after reading an AI answer has usually shortlisted you, so give them proof, a clear answer and a next step.
5. Keep your company facts the same everywhere
Engines cross-check before they recommend anyone. Write one description of what you do and who it's for, then use it on your site, LinkedIn, G2 and every directory profile. Mismatched facts give an AI answer a reason to leave you out.
Our guide to showing up in AI search covers each engine's crawler rules, favourite sources and measurement in full, step by step.
What should you measure instead of clicks?
Measure whether buyers see you, whether the answers name you and whether search turns into pipeline. Clicks still matter on buying pages. On research searches, they undercount you badly.
| Measure | What it tells you | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions on priority non-brand searches | Whether buyers see you | Search Console Performance report |
| AI Overview and AI Mode impressions | Whether Google's AI answers show your pages | Search Console Generative AI report |
| AI recommendation rate | How often ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity suggest you | A fixed set of buyer questions, run monthly |
| Branded search demand | Whether answers send people to look you up | Brand queries in Search Console |
| "How did you hear about us?" | Influence no tracker sees | An optional field on your demo form |
| AI referral leads | The clicks AI answers do send | GA4's AI Assistant channel |
| Search-sourced pipeline | What all of it is worth | Your CRM |
Google added the AI Assistant channel to GA4 on 13 May 2026, for visits from chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. It still misses anyone who read an answer and came back later by typing your name.
Read the measures together. Rising AI impressions, more brand searches and demo forms that mention ChatGPT tell you zero-click search is working for you, even while sessions fall. SparkToro makes the same point bluntly: traffic can fall even as revenue rises.
For the board-level version, see our guide to the SEO KPIs executives should care about, and read AI search attribution to tie answers to deals.
Is zero-click search the end of SEO?
No. AI answers draw heavily on what ranks in Google, so SEO still decides who gets quoted. SparkToro says SEO "still matters as much or more than ever before, it just won't earn you traffic the way it once did."
What has changed is the scoreboard. Traffic from simple questions is shrinking for good, so the value sits in buying-search rankings, a place in the answers and the pipeline both produce.
Is Searchmaxxed right for you?
We're a strong fit if you're a law firm, clinic or premium builder watching organic clicks fall while impressions hold. Maybe ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews name your competitors and skip you, or your SEO team hasn't caught up with zero-click search yet.
Here's what you get. We go after the research searches where your buyers build their shortlist, and we put your name in those answers. Then we take more of the buying searches that still send clicks. You talk to the people doing the work. No account manager, no handoffs. We track which searches and AI answers turn into revenue, through your CRM as well as GA4. You own your site, content and data from day one, and our enterprise SEO page sets out the full scope of the work.
One client came to us with a website that wasn't working. Three months later he was on page one for one of the most competitive searches in his industry. Now he has more high-intent leads than he can handle, and we're building the systems to handle them.
The bigger picture:
Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than $15 million in revenue through search for its clients.
"I can't believe this worked." That's what we hear. Clients tell us they finally found a growth partner in search that keeps its word and gets things done.
We're the wrong call in three cases. If you need leads this month just to survive, search takes longer than that. If you only want a dashboard of AI mentions, an AI visibility tool will cost you less. And if you run an ad-funded publisher, lost pageviews are the whole problem, which calls for a different plan from ours.
What should you do this week?
Pull 12 months of queries from Search Console and sort your top 50 into answer searches and click searches. Search each answer search yourself and note which vendors the AI Overview and ChatGPT name. Then add a "How did you hear about us?" field to your demo form.
Want us to do it with you? Get your free search analysis. We'll benchmark you against your top competitors across Google, ChatGPT and the other AI engines. We'll show you where they're named instead of you, and the few moves that will matter most.
Frequently asked questions
What is a zero-click strategy?
A zero-click strategy wins influence on searches that never send a click, then wins the click on the searches that still do. You answer research questions plainly, so AI Overviews and ChatGPT quote and name you. You build strong buying pages. And you judge it on impressions, AI recommendations, brand searches and pipeline as well as traffic.
What are the four types of searches?
Informational, navigational, commercial and transactional. Informational searches ("what is DMARC") end without a click most often, because Google can answer them on the page. Navigational searches still click, since Google can't be the site you asked for, and commercial and transactional searches keep more of their clicks too.
What causes zero-click searches?
Google answering on the results page. AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets, knowledge panels, People Also Ask, local packs and instant answers all resolve searches without a visit. AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini do the same outside Google, and SparkToro also points to Google nudging people to search again.
Can Google Analytics track zero-click searches?
No. A zero-click search never reaches your website, so GA4 can't record it. Use Search Console instead. Its Performance report counts impressions, and its Generative AI performance report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Pair those with a "How did you hear about us?" field on your forms.
Does ChatGPT count as a zero-click search?
In effect, yes. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer in full and link to a few sources, and most people never click them. So in B2B, the prize is being the vendor the answer recommends, more than the visit.
What is Google Zero?
Google Zero is the point when Google stops sending any clicks to websites at all, a phrase coined by Nilay Patel of The Verge. Wikipedia notes that some publishers cite it when they shift effort to newsletters and direct reader relationships.
