A B2B SEO strategy that drives pipeline wins the searches a buying committee makes while picking a vendor, then proves it in the CRM. Four jobs. First, build a page for every question the committee asks, from the daily user to finance, procurement and security. Second, publish honest comparison and alternatives pages. That's where shortlists form. Third, get named in the AI answers and review sites that buyers now check before they ever talk to sales. Fourth, measure opportunities and pipeline, including deals your sales team closes after someone read your pages. Traffic alone tells you almost nothing.
I'm Brenden House, and I run Searchmaxxed, an SEO and AI SEO agency for enterprise, B2B SaaS, venture-backed, manufacturing and public-sector companies. Page one for this search mostly hands you a generic checklist. This is the pipeline version, written for the people who have to report the number.
In summary
- Write for the committee. Forrester's 2026 buying research puts 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers on a typical purchase. Each one searches for something different.
- Win the shortlist pages. "X vs Y", "X alternatives", pricing, integration and security pages sit closest to a purchase, and they're the pages many B2B sites leave half-built. Check yours.
- AI answers now build the shortlist. In G2's March 2026 survey, 51% of software buyers started research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. Review-site citations were the top trust signal.
- Measure in the CRM. Report opportunities and pipeline from organic search, and catch the sales-assisted deals with a free-text "How did you hear about us?" field. GA4 alone misses them.
- Searchmaxxed builds this for you: the pages, technical SEO, links, digital PR and AI answer tracking, on a site you own.
What is B2B SEO, and how is it different from B2C SEO?
B2B SEO is the work of getting a business-to-business company found in Google and AI answers by the people who choose, approve and use it. It differs from B2C SEO in who searches and how a sale happens. Many people search. Demand is small and specific, and the click rarely ends in a checkout.
A consumer brand wants one person to buy today. You need a committee of a dozen or more to agree, often over most of a year, before a contract gets signed. So your best keyword might get 40 searches a month. It can still be worth more than a consumer term with 40,000.
| B2C SEO | B2B SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Who searches | One shopper | A buying committee, plus outside advisers |
| Search demand | High volume, broad terms | Low volume, specific and technical terms |
| What a conversion looks like | Purchase or sign-up on the site | Demo request, trial, sales call or RFP invitation |
| Sales cycle | Minutes to weeks | Months; 6sense measured an average of 10.1 months in 2025 |
| Pages that matter most | Product and category pages | Solution, comparison, alternatives, integration, pricing and security pages |
| Proof of success | Online revenue | Pipeline and closed revenue in the CRM |
That last row decides everything else. If the strategy can't show up in your CRM as pipeline, the board will treat SEO as a cost and cut it next budget round.
Who searches during a B2B purchase?
Every member of the buying group searches, and each one asks a different question. Forrester's State of Business Buying 2026, published 21 January 2026, puts 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers on a typical decision. Write for one "persona" and the rest of the committee finds its answers on someone else's site.
Take a worked example. It's a made-up but typical company: an expense management platform selling to firms with 200 to 2,000 staff in Australia and the US.
| Committee role | What they search | The page that answers them |
|---|---|---|
| Finance lead (the champion) | "expense management software for mid-size companies" | Solution page for that company size |
| Daily user in finance ops | "automate receipt matching", "corporate card reconciliation" | Feature and use-case pages |
| IT and security | "[product] SOC 2", "[product] SSO Okta" | Security and trust page, integration pages |
| Procurement | "[product] pricing", "[product] contract terms" | Pricing page with plan logic, even without numbers |
| Executive sponsor | "[product] vs [competitor]", "[competitor] alternatives" | Comparison and alternatives pages |
| Outside advisers | "best expense software for accountants" | Partner pages, plus the third-party lists AI answers cite |
For a manufacturer the roles shift to engineering, operations, quality and purchasing, and the searches turn to specs, tolerances, certifications and lead times. The logic holds. One role, one question, one page that answers it.
Our AI SEO Audit builds this map from your Search Console data, the live Google results and what AI answers say about your category. It shows where buyers search without finding you. Each gap becomes a page on the plan, and our B2B SEO service shows how we cover the whole committee.
Which pages drive pipeline in B2B SEO?
The pages closest to a purchase drive pipeline: solution, comparison, alternatives, integration, pricing, security and case-study pages. Blog articles bring people in early. These pages win the shortlist.
| Page type | Search it targets | Why it moves pipeline |
|---|---|---|
| Solution or category page | "[category] software for [industry or size]" | The champion's first serious search |
| Comparison page | "[you] vs [competitor]" | Buyers search it when two vendors are left |
| Alternatives page | "[competitor] alternatives" | Catches buyers leaving a rival at renewal |
| Integration page | "[you] [their CRM, ERP or IdP] integration" | IT kills deals that won't connect |
| Pricing page | "[you] pricing" | Procurement checks it before any call |
| Security and compliance page | "[you] SOC 2", "ISO 27001", "IRAP" | Security review blocks enterprise and public-sector deals |
| Industry page | "[category] for [industry]" | Shows you've solved their exact problem |
| Case study | "[category] case study [industry]" | Gives the champion proof to forward internally |
Plenty of B2B sites stop at solution pages and a blog, skipping the comparisons, alternatives and integrations buyers search in the weeks before a call. That gap is why our Agentic Search Engineering package builds net-new comparison, industry and integration page families.
Pricing pages deserve a note. You don't need to publish numbers to rank for "[you] pricing". A page that explains how you price, what changes the quote and what's included still answers procurement's question. Say nothing? A third-party site will answer it for you, and you won't like the answer.
How do you write comparison and alternatives pages buyers trust?
Write them as a fair guide. Name the rival, state its real strengths, and say plainly which buyer should pick it. Buyers read and forward a comparison page that admits where a competitor wins, and AI answers quote it. It sounds like the truth.
Here's the shape we use for an "X vs Y" page:
- The verdict in the first 80 words. Who should pick you, who should pick them, and when neither fits.
- One comparison table. Use the same rows for both products: price model, deployment, integrations, security certifications, support and contract terms.
- One section per deciding factor. Open each section with the answer, then give the detail a technical evaluator will want.
- Sources for every claim about the rival. Link their own docs or pricing page, with the date you checked it, so legal and the reader can both verify the claim.
- A last-updated date. Rivals change plans and prices often, and one stale claim costs you the buyer's trust.
Alternatives pages follow the same rules with more products on the list. Put yourself first if you like, but say it's your page. Buyers can tell when a vendor wrote the "neutral" list, and so can the people in their committee who've read a hundred of them.
Legal matters here. Keep claims about a competitor factual, sourced and dated, and let your legal team sign off the template once. After that, new pages go out in days.
How do AI answers shortlist B2B vendors?
AI answers shortlist vendors by searching the web, reading the results, and naming the companies those pages agree on. Comparison articles, review sites and listicles carry most of the weight. Your own site matters, though rarely on its own.
It's the new front door. In G2's March 2026 survey, 51% of B2B software buyers began research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google. Eleven months earlier it was 29%. G2 also found AI chatbots are the number one source influencing which vendors make the shortlist. And the shortlist decides the deal: 6sense's 2025 report found the winner sat on the Day One shortlist 95% of the time.
We measured how this works on our own panel of buying questions about hiring an agency, which is a B2B purchase like any other. Here's what we found:
> We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.
And here's which sources won the citations in that same panel:
> Across 900 ChatGPT answers about Australian agencies, a single third-party "best agencies" site was cited in 168 of them. The next three were a second listicle, Semrush's agency directory and Clutch. If you want to be recommended, the job is getting onto the handful of pages the model already trusts.
Each engine leans on different sources, too. From a second panel of ours:
> Perplexity cited a review directory (Semrush Agencies, Clutch, DesignRush and the like) in 36 of 44 agency answers. ChatGPT did it in 20 and Claude in 15. One agency's Clutch profile had six reviews and was cited 20 times.
For your category, that points to work:
- Find the pages AI answers already cite for your category questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Earn a place on them through digital PR, expert commentary and links from the publications in your space.
- Keep your own review profiles current. G2 found review-site citations are the top signal that makes buyers trust a chatbot's recommendation. Your team owns those profiles and the customer review requests.
- State your facts plainly on your own site. Say who you serve, what you integrate with, which certifications you hold and how you price, in plain sentences an engine can lift and quote.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have "no additional requirements" beyond normal SEO best practice. So the technical and page work does double duty. Our Agentic Search Engineering package tracks whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews name you. It also runs the digital PR and link campaigns that give those engines a reason to name you. For the mechanics, read our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT.
How should B2B companies measure SEO?
Measure B2B SEO by the opportunities and pipeline it creates, then by closed revenue. Rankings, traffic and form fills come second. The hard part is the sales-assisted conversion: someone reads your comparison page, then books a demo two weeks later by replying to a sales email.
A sales-assisted conversion is a deal that search started but a person on your sales team finished. GA4 usually credits it to Direct or Email, so organic search looks weaker in your reports than it is.
| What to track | Where it lives | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Non-brand clicks to money pages | Search Console | Whether the right pages win the right searches |
| Demo, trial and contact conversions by landing page | GA4 | Which pages start conversations |
| First-touch landing page on each lead | CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce) | Which page each opportunity first read |
| "How did you hear about us?" answers | Free-text field on your demo form | Search, AI answers and word of mouth that GA4 can't see |
| Opportunities and pipeline from organic | CRM report | The number your CFO cares about |
| Named presence in AI answers | Monthly tracked question set | Whether you make the AI shortlist |
Check the plumbing first. Here's a fault we found in the GA4 setup of one enterprise B2B client, in its enquiry events:
> A client's four enquiry types never counted as conversions. Their event names ran 41 to 50 characters; GA4 cuts at 40. The 40-character "career" event counted every time. Nobody had noticed, because the events still showed up.
AI traffic needs the same scepticism, because bots can pass for real AI visitors.
> A client's GA4 showed AI-assistant visits jump from 354 to 6,050 in a month. Almost none of it was real. About 5,700 came in three one-hour bursts: same 1920x1080 desktop Chrome, all new users, no referrer, about 20 seconds each, landing on two pages. Real AI traffic was 385 sessions against 354 the month before, roughly flat.
That's why we wire and check Search Console and GA4 at the start of every managed package, before we report a single number. Each month you get a decision memo tying the work to what moved.
What does a B2B SEO strategy look like in the first 90 days?
The first 90 days fix what blocks you, build the pages closest to a purchase, and set up measurement in the CRM. Thought leadership comes after.
| Weeks | What happens | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Audit: technical SEO, Search Console, GA4 events, CRM fields, competitors, AI answers for your category | A ranked list of fixes and missing pages |
| 3 to 4 | Fix crawl, indexing, site structure and schema; repair conversion tracking | Clean data and pages Google can read |
| 5 to 8 | Ship solution, comparison, alternatives and integration pages, with internal links from the rest of the site | New pages indexed and gaining impressions |
| 9 to 12 | Pricing logic, security and industry pages; start digital PR and link work | First non-brand clicks and demo requests from the new pages |
Technical SEO for a B2B site usually means JavaScript rendering, gated resource libraries, duplicate regional sites and a slow CMS. Fix those first. Nothing else ranks while Google can't read the page.
Every managed package runs on this rhythm: a 90-day plan in weekly releases, each page built on your site, checked live and measured. If you run several regions or products, see our enterprise SEO service.
How long does B2B SEO take to drive pipeline?
New pages usually gain impressions within weeks, and leads tend to follow within a quarter or two. Pipeline you can report on takes longer, because your sales cycle sits on top of the SEO timeline. With a ten-month cycle, a lead from month three of the work may not close until well into the following financial year.
So judge it in layers. Use 28-day periods for page performance, 90-day periods for direction, and two or three quarters for pipeline and revenue. Comparison and alternatives pages usually convert first. The people searching them are already choosing.
Should you hire a B2B SEO agency or build an in-house team?
Hire an agency when you need the full set of skills now: technical SEO, content, development, digital PR and measurement. Build in-house when you have a steady flow of work and time to hire. Many B2B companies do both.
| In-house team | B2B SEO agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed to start | Slow; hiring takes months | Fast; the team exists |
| Skill range | Usually one or two specialists | Technical, content, dev, PR and analytics |
| Product knowledge | Deep from day one | Needs onboarding and access to sales |
| Cost shape | Salaries and tools | Monthly fee |
| Best for | Large, steady content needs | Building fast or filling skill gaps |
If you go with an agency, ask four things. Which pages will you ship each month, and who builds them? How will you report pipeline, and which AI answers will you track for our category? Vague answers are your answer.
Where does Searchmaxxed fit?
Searchmaxxed is an SEO and AI SEO agency for enterprise, B2B SaaS, venture-backed, manufacturing and public-sector companies. We do technical SEO, B2B content, comparison and integration pages, link building, digital PR, GEO, AEO and LLM SEO. The aim? Rank in Google and get named in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers for the searches that bring pipeline.
| Package | Who it suits | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Growth System | A B2B company growing in one or two markets | 30 page releases a month, work on up to four existing pages, one qualified link action a month, AI visibility tracking |
| Agentic Search Engineering | A crowded category or national market | 50 page releases a month, net-new comparison, industry and integration page families, monthly press release, continuous digital PR and link campaigns, AI answer tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews |
| Custom & Enterprise | Several products, brands or markets | Dedicated engineering, custom reporting and original first-party research |
A page release is an approved new page or a substantial rebuild. Every managed package includes ongoing audits, the 90-day plan in weekly releases, the build itself and a monthly decision memo. No account managers. You talk to the people doing the work, and you own the site, repository, content and data from day one.
Here's how we do it. We build on a website you own, our Agentic Website. Then AI agents pull your Search Console and GA4 data, read the Google results and check what AI answers say about you and your rivals. That feeds the Managed Search Loop, which shows which page, fix or link should bring the most pipeline next. Off your site, the Off-Page Source Layer covers the links and digital PR AI answers draw on.
Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than A$10 million in revenue through search for its clients.
Is Searchmaxxed right for you?
We fit B2B marketing and growth teams that want pages shipped every month and pipeline reported in the CRM. We're a poor fit if search has to fill this quarter's pipeline on its own, or if every page waits weeks for approval.
| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
|---|---|
| You sell to a buying committee and need pages for each role | You sell one product to consumers |
| You want comparison, alternatives and integration pages built for you | You want reports and advice, not changes to your site |
| You want Google and AI answers handled by one team | You only want to watch AI mentions; a tracking tool costs less |
| You can agree a comparison-page template with legal once | Each page needs weeks of review before it can go live |
| You want to own your site, repository, content and data | You're shopping for the cheapest retainer |
Software companies can see our category, comparison, integration and docs pages in our SaaS SEO service. Manufacturers? See the capability, tolerance and certification pages in manufacturing SEO.
Frequently asked questions
What is a B2B SEO strategy?
A B2B SEO strategy is a plan to rank in Google and AI answers for the searches a buying committee makes while choosing a vendor. It covers solution, comparison, pricing, integration and security pages, plus technical SEO, links and digital PR. Success means pipeline in the CRM.
Does SEO work for B2B companies?
Yes, when it targets buying searches and reports pipeline. Low-volume searches like "[competitor] alternatives" or "[category] SOC 2" bring few visitors, but each one is often a person on an active shortlist. Traffic-led B2B SEO tends to grow sessions while pipeline stays flat.
What keywords should a B2B company target first?
Start with the searches closest to a purchase: "[you] vs [competitor]", "[competitor] alternatives", "[category] for [industry]", "[you] pricing" and "[you] [integration]". Then add the problems your sales team hears on calls. Broad "what is" topics come last.
How do I get my company recommended by ChatGPT?
Get onto the pages ChatGPT already cites for your category, and state your facts plainly on your own site. ChatGPT reads far more pages than it cites. Comparison lists, review directories and trade publications tend to make the cut, so digital PR and honest comparison pages do most of the work.
Should B2B content be gated?
Keep pages that answer search questions ungated, so Google and AI answers can read them. Gate only deep assets, like original research data or templates. A gated page can't rank for the question it answers.
How much does B2B SEO cost?
It depends on how many pages ship each month, how much link and digital PR work you need, and how many markets you cover. Compare quotes by output: page releases a month, link actions and the AI answers tracked. Our B2B SEO page lists what each Searchmaxxed package includes.
How do you track SEO leads that close through sales?
Record the first-touch landing page on every CRM lead and add a free-text "How did you hear about us?" field to your demo form. Then report opportunities and pipeline by source in HubSpot or Salesforce. GA4 alone won't see them.
What should you do next?
Pull your last five won deals. Find the first page each buyer read on your site, using the CRM's first-touch field or your sales team's notes. If none of them read a comparison, pricing or integration page, that's your gap. If you want us to build those pages and track the pipeline they bring, let's talk pricing.
