ChatGPT ads: what B2B marketers should know (2026)

ChatGPT ads are paid, labelled placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT's answers to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Testing started in the US on 9 February 2026. By 21 October 2026, OpenAI said ads ran in 89 countries, and its self-serve Ads Manager is open to Australian and US businesses. You pay per view, per click or toward a conversion, with a minimum daily budget of US$25 in the US; the minimum varies by market and currency. The ads never change the answer itself. For B2B, one detail matters most: Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts never see an ad.

I'm Brenden House. I run Searchmaxxed, an SEO and AI SEO agency. On 27 October 2026 (AEST) I read OpenAI's announcements, Help Center and ad policies. Every OpenAI fact below carries its date.

In summary

  • What they are: one sponsored unit below a ChatGPT response, with a name, logo, headline, copy, image and link. ChatGPT's answer above it stays organic.
  • Who sees them: logged-in adults on Free and Go. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see none, and OpenAI counted more than 7 million ChatGPT for Work seats back in November 2025.
  • How you buy: self-serve Ads Manager in Australia and the US, on CPM, CPC or conversion bids, with suggested CPC bids of US$3 to US$5.
  • How targeting works: the conversation decides most of it. You add country, region, platform, customer lists and plain-English "context hints", but there are no keywords to bid on.
  • What it means for organic: the answer above the ad is still earned, so fix how ChatGPT describes you before you buy ads.

What are ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements OpenAI sells inside ChatGPT, shown as one clearly labelled unit below a response and kept separate from the answer. Each ad has six parts. OpenAI's Help Center lists them as the advertiser name, a favicon, a title, copy, a landing page and an image.

Some people search for "ChatGPT sponsored answers". That product doesn't exist. OpenAI's Help Center is blunt. "Ads run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." The answer is organic. The ad sits underneath.

Two more terms come up in every conversation about ChatGPT ads, so here they are in plain words:

  • Ads Manager is OpenAI's self-serve tool for creating campaigns, setting budgets and bids, uploading ads and reading results. It's still labelled beta.
  • Context hints are short descriptions you write about your product, who it helps and when it's useful. OpenAI's system uses them to judge relevance. They aren't keywords.

The format is changing fast, so here's everything OpenAI has shipped or is testing as of late October 2026.

When did ChatGPT ads launch, and where can you run them?

ChatGPT ads went into testing in the US on 9 February 2026, and Australia joined the next group of markets announced on 26 March 2026. As of 27 October 2026, OpenAI's availability page lists self-serve Ads Manager as "Available" in both Australia and the US.

The timeline, from OpenAI's own posts:

One catch for global teams. OpenAI's campaign guide says some new self-serve accounts can only advertise in their home country at first. Other countries open up after identity checks and enough spend, so an Australian company can't open an account Monday and run US ads Tuesday.

Who actually sees ChatGPT ads?

Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans can see ChatGPT ads; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts get none. Users identified as under 18 never see ads, and neither does anyone in a Temporary Chat.

OpenAI also keeps ads away from some conversations. Ads aren't eligible near personal health, mental health or politics. Free users can switch to an ad-free mode in exchange for fewer messages. Plus and Pro remove ads entirely. OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week, but it doesn't say how many sit on the ad-supported plans.

Sit with this part. Your buyer might research a category at work, inside their company's ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace. Ads can't reach that person there. OpenAI reported "more than 7 million total ChatGPT for Work seats" on 5 November 2025. How many of them are your buyers? Nobody publishes that, and I couldn't verify a figure. What's certain is the mechanism. In a work account, the organic answer is the only thing on the screen.

The same buyer might use the free app at home on the weekend. There, they can see your ad. A sensible plan reaches the buyer in both places: at work through the answer, and at home through the answer and the ad.

How do ChatGPT ads work: targeting, bidding and the auction?

ChatGPT ads match the conversation, not keywords. OpenAI's system reads the context and intent of the current chat, your ad copy and landing page, your context hints and your targeting settings. Then it runs an auction.

OpenAI's Help Center calls it "a relevance-weighted, second-price auction", which in plain terms means a more relevant ad can beat a higher bid. When personalisation is on, the system can also use signals from the person's past chats and memory. Advertisers never see any of it.

Here's what you can set, according to OpenAI's campaign, audience and context-hint guides read on 27 October 2026 (AEST):

SettingWhat it doesLimits OpenAI states
ObjectiveViews (CPM), Clicks (CPC) or ConversionsCan't change objective after creation
CountryWhere ads can showSome new accounts start home-country only
RegionStates, cities, markets and postcodesWhere available; product-feed campaigns are country-only
PlatformAndroid app or web, desktop web, iOS app or webFive options
Custom audiencesInclude or exclude your own customer lists25,000 matched users to include; 100,000 recommended
Bid adjustmentsRaise or lower bids for a listed audience0.1x to 10x
Context hintsDescribe what you sell, who it helps, when it's usefulNot keywords; can't restrict delivery
Negative PhrasesBrand safety: keep ads away from topics your brand rules outQualifying advertisers only

Custom audiences are where B2B gets interesting. You can upload contacts from your target accounts, or exclude current customers. The catch is size. Inclusion needs 25,000 matched people, and a tight account-based list won't get there. Exclusions have no minimum.

Context hints reward the way B2B marketers already write positioning. OpenAI's own example for software is "Bookkeeping software for growing retailers that need to reconcile online and in-store sales". It names the product, the buyer and the situation, while a vague hint like "accounting software" gives the system nothing new to work with.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

ChatGPT ads have no published rate card. You bid in an auction. OpenAI's Help Center recommends starting CPC campaigns at a maximum bid of US$3 to US$5 per click. The daily floor is US$25 in the US, and it varies by market and currency.

Cost itemWhat OpenAI statesSource and date read

BillingPostpaid; card or invoiceBilling and payment guide, 27 Oct 2026
Performance benchmarks"Does not yet have performance benchmarks"Advertiser FAQ, 27 Oct 2026

Early entry was very different. Industry newsletter The Keyword reported a US$200,000 minimum and a US$60 CPM for the first brands in February 2026. Those are press reports. I couldn't find either figure on an OpenAI page. OpenAI's 5 May post added CPC bidding, and by 31 August it said CPC and outcome-optimised bidding "now account for the majority of campaigns".

What should a B2B team budget? Treat it as a test. Pick one product, one country and one conversion you trust, like a demo request, and set an end date before you start. Then read cost per qualified pipeline dollar, never cost per click.

Do ChatGPT ads change ChatGPT's answers?

No. OpenAI says ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers, run on separate systems from the chat model, and are always labelled. They share a screen, nothing else.

For B2B, that split is everything. Here's how the two placements compare on the things a B2B marketer cares about:

ChatGPT's organic answerA ChatGPT ad
Where it sitsThe response itselfOne unit below the response
How you get inBeing the source and brand the answer namesBidding in Ads Manager

LabelNoneSponsored, with an ad disclosure

The ad can show up even when the answer recommends a competitor. Picture a buyer asking ChatGPT for the best tools in your category, and the answer lists three rivals. Your sponsored unit sits underneath. You've paid to be the footnote. That's why I'd start with the answer, and only then decide how much to spend under it.

What do ChatGPT ads mean for organic AI visibility?

ChatGPT ads don't replace organic AI visibility. They sit underneath it. The answer above the ad still comes from the sources ChatGPT finds, reads and trusts, and it's all Business and Enterprise users ever see.

Organic AI visibility means being named, cited or recommended in ChatGPT's answers without paying for the placement. It comes from two places: pages ChatGPT can crawl and quote, and other sites that mention you by name.

Our own panel shows how picky it is. We put 300 Australian agency-buyer questions to ChatGPT three times each, with search on. It pulled 17,870 search results into those 900 answers and kept 4,389 as sources. Being found is the easy part. About three in four results it reads never make the answer.

The sources it keeps cluster hard. Across 900 ChatGPT answers about Australian agencies, a single third-party "best agencies" site was cited in 168 of them. The next three were a second listicle, Semrush's agency directory and Clutch. If you want to be recommended, the job is getting onto the handful of pages the model already trusts.

That 2 October 2026 panel was about agencies, not your category. The pattern is what carries over: a few trusted pages decide the answer, and an ad can't buy its way onto them.

One link between the two gets missed. Both run on OpenAI's crawlers. OpenAI's crawler docs say OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features". Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". OAI-AdsBot checks every landing page you submit as an ad, and OpenAI's Help Center says you "must allow" it.

Plenty of robots.txt files block crawlers they've never heard of, by default or through a folder rule for landing pages like /lp/ or /go/. OpenAI's Help Center says crawling "will stop immediately" when robots.txt disallows it.

The fix is small. Name OAI-SearchBot and OAI-AdsBot, allow the folders your ads and answers point to, and test that each landing page returns a normal response. Our guide to whether you should block AI crawlers covers the rest of the bot list. We fix this in every plan.

Which B2B companies can't advertise on ChatGPT?

Several regulated B2B categories can't run ChatGPT ads anywhere outside the US, which matters for Australian fintech, legal and health companies. OpenAI's ad policies, updated 10 September 2026, are blunt about markets outside the US. Financial services and health services ads there are "generally prohibited". Legal services ads are "currently prohibited".

CategoryUnited StatesAustralia
Financial services (loans, cards, insurance, payments)Case-by-case for approved advertisersGenerally prohibited
General financial software, like budgeting toolsGenerally permittedGenerally permitted
Legal servicesPermitted if licensed where the ad showsProhibited
Health services and medical productsCase-by-case for approved advertisersGenerally prohibited
Political content, including advocacy about government actionDisallowedDisallowed
Individual job or housing listingsProhibitedProhibited

The policy separates tools from services. Software that doesn't sell a financial product, like budgeting or accounting software, is generally fine. A lender or payments business isn't. Public-sector teams should read the political section closely, because it covers advocacy "connected to public officials or government action".

For an Australian fintech, legal-tech or health-tech company, that settles it. Paid placement isn't available. Only the organic answer gets you in.

Should a B2B company run ChatGPT ads?

Run a ChatGPT ads test when your buyers use free ChatGPT, your category is allowed, and you can track a real conversion. Fix your organic answer first if buyers research at work, your category is restricted, or ChatGPT currently names your competitors and not you.

Three B2B companies, three answers. They're illustrations, not clients:

CompanyCan it advertise?Who it missesMy call
Australian B2B SaaS selling payroll software to mid-sized firmsYes, as financial software, on my reading of the policyBuyers in ChatGPT Business or EnterpriseFix how ChatGPT describes the product, then test ads in Australia
Australian fintech lending to businessesNo: financial services outside the USEveryone, through paidOrganic AI visibility only
US manufacturer of industrial sensors selling to plant engineersYesEngineers in company ChatGPT workspacesOrganic first, small ad test for the free-plan audience

The payroll company is the normal case: payroll software reads as a financial tool, not a financial service, so its ads should run. But say ChatGPT's answer to "best payroll software for a 200-person company in Australia" names three rivals. Then every ad click starts with the buyer reading a competitor's recommendation.

Run it in five steps:

  1. Check your category against OpenAI's ad policies for every country you plan to target, because restrictions differ by market.
  2. Allow OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot, and test each landing page.
  3. Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, and write down who it names.
  4. Start one campaign: one product, one country, a conversion objective and a fixed end date.
  5. Compare cost per qualified opportunity with your search and LinkedIn numbers.

Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT sets out the organic side.

How do you measure ChatGPT ads and AI traffic?

Measure ChatGPT ads with OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API, UTM tags on every landing page, and your CRM. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. It also connects to GA4.

Watch for two traps. OpenAI's Help Center warns that its ad-review crawlers visit landing pages with your tracking parameters, so analytics tools can count them as paid traffic. Those visits aren't billed, but they will still inflate a paid-traffic report if nobody filters them out.

Trap two: bots posing as AI visitors. This happened on an enterprise B2B client's account. A client's GA4 showed AI-assistant visits jump from 354 to 6,050 in a month. Almost none of it was real. About 5,700 came in three one-hour bursts: same 1920x1080 desktop Chrome, all new users, no referrer, about 20 seconds each, landing on two pages. Real AI traffic was 385 sessions against 354 the month before, roughly flat.

Check for bots before anyone celebrates. Judge ads on CRM pipeline. Judge organic AI visibility on the answers themselves: which questions name you, which name a competitor, and what changed this month. Our guide to tracking AI visibility explains how to set that up.

Where does Searchmaxxed fit?

Searchmaxxed is an SEO and AI SEO agency for enterprise, B2B SaaS, venture-backed, manufacturing and public-sector companies. We don't buy or manage ChatGPT ads. We work on the answer above them: technical SEO, content, GEO, AEO and LLM SEO, plus link building and digital PR. The aim is to rank in Google and get named in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers.

For a company weighing ChatGPT ads, that work covers four things:

  • Crawler access. We check robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules so OAI-SearchBot can read your site and OAI-AdsBot can reach every landing page.
  • Pages ChatGPT can quote. Product, use-case, comparison and integration pages that answer your buyers' questions plainly, with schema that matches.
  • Sources the answer trusts. Digital PR and link campaigns that get you onto the pages AI answers draw from.
  • Answer tracking. The questions your buyers ask, tested in ChatGPT and the other engines, with competitors alongside.
PlanWho it suitsWhat it includes
Growth SystemA company growing in one or two markets30 page releases a month, work on up to 4 existing pages, one qualified link action a month, AI visibility tracking
Agentic Search EngineeringA crowded or national category50 page releases a month, comparison, industry and integration pages, digital PR and link campaigns, AI answer tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews
Custom & EnterpriseSeveral brands, markets or a very large siteMultiple markets, dedicated engineering, custom reporting and original first-party research

A page release is an approved new page or a substantial rebuild. Every managed plan includes ongoing audits, a 90-day plan in weekly releases, the build work and a monthly decision memo. You own the site, repository, content and data from day one, and our AI search optimisation service page sets out the work in full.

Here's how we do it. We build on a website you own, our Agentic Website. AI agents pull your Search Console and GA4 data, read the Google results and check what ChatGPT says about you and your competitors. That feeds the Managed Search Loop, which shows which page, fix or link should bring in the most pipeline next. We build it, check the live page and measure what changed.

Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than A$10 million in revenue through search for its clients.

Is Searchmaxxed right for you?

We're a good fit for marketing and growth leaders who want ChatGPT and Google to name their company without paying for every view. If you only want someone to run a ChatGPT ad campaign, we're the wrong call, because we don't sell media buying.

Searchmaxxed is a good fit ifLook elsewhere if
ChatGPT names your competitors and not youYou only want ChatGPT ad campaigns managed
Your buyers research inside ChatGPT Business or EnterpriseYou need pipeline this month and paid is your only lever
Your category can't advertise in ChatGPT where you sellYou want a dashboard of AI mentions, not changes to your site

Many teams will do both. An ad test can run while the organic work builds, and the crawler fixes help both.

Frequently asked questions

Are there ads on ChatGPT now?

Yes. OpenAI started testing ads in the US on 9 February 2026, and said on 21 October 2026 that ads run in 89 countries, including Australia. They show to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans only.

Do ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users see ads?

No. OpenAI's Help Center says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't have ads. Free users can also pick an ad-free mode with lower message limits.

How do I advertise on ChatGPT?

Sign up at ads.openai.com and use the self-serve Ads Manager, which lists Australia and the US as available. Larger advertisers can also buy through OpenAI's ads team or partner agencies, and every landing page must let OAI-AdsBot crawl it.

Can you target keywords with ChatGPT ads?

No. OpenAI's creative guide says ChatGPT "requires a different approach than keyword-based platforms". You write context hints describing your product, buyer and use case, and you can target by country, region, platform and uploaded customer lists.

How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT?

You bid in an auction. OpenAI recommends starting CPC bids at US$3 to US$5, and the minimum daily budget is US$25 in the US, varying by market and currency. OpenAI says it has no performance benchmarks yet.

Can advertisers pay to appear in ChatGPT's answers?

No. OpenAI says advertisers can't shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses. Ads sit below the answer, labelled sponsored. Being named in the answer itself comes from your pages and the sources ChatGPT trusts.

Do ChatGPT ads affect SEO or AI visibility?

Not directly, because ads and answers run on separate systems. They share one practical link: OpenAI's crawlers. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers, and blocking OAI-AdsBot stops your ads passing review.

What should you do next?

Ask ChatGPT the three questions your best buyers ask, and write down who it names. Then check your robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot and OAI-AdsBot. If ChatGPT names your competitors and you'd like us to scope the work, let's talk pricing.
