AI chooses sources by finding relevant information, using it to build an answer, and attaching links to selected supporting pages. Finding and citing are different decisions. Search-enabled models can rewrite your question, run related searches and combine evidence from several sites. Retrieval can end without a citation.
That distinction matters for your website. A missing link might mean the system never found your page, or that it found something more useful elsewhere. Those problems need different fixes.
I'm Brenden House, founder of Searchmaxxed. This guide separates what providers actually document from the changes an enterprise marketing team can make to product pages, technical access and supporting evidence.
In summary
- Retrieval finds information; citation identifies selected sources in the answer. Neither is the same as recommending your company.
- Google documents query fan-out. OpenAI documents query rewriting and follow-up searches, rather than a fixed search for your exact words.
- ChatGPT, Gemini Apps, Gemini's API, Perplexity and AI Overviews aren't interchangeable. Their documentation describes different products and controls.
- Fix access problems first. Then make product claims specific, supported and easy to understand without the rest of your website.
- Measure the answer, the cited page and the claim it supports. A source count alone misses what your buyers actually read.
How do LLMs choose sources rather than answer from memory?
Search-enabled LLMs retrieve external information before or during answer generation, giving the system material beyond what the underlying language model learned in training. A model answering without search instead relies on learned information and whatever context it receives.
The model isn't the whole product. Search tools, uploaded documents, connected applications and the surrounding interface can all change the information available to an assistant. Check which mode you're using.
Retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, means generating an answer using information retrieved from an external collection. That collection might contain public webpages or private documents.
The original RAG paper, published at NeurIPS in 2020, combined a language model with a retrievable Wikipedia index. It establishes an architecture, not universal rules.
A useful explanation separates these jobs:
| Job | What it means | What your website needs |
|---|---|---|
| Understand the request | Identify the question and its constraints | Clear product names, use cases and scope |
| Retrieve information | Find relevant pages or passages | Accessible content and useful search visibility |
| Generate an answer | Combine retrieved information with the conversation | Specific claims with their conditions attached |
| Attach citations | Link selected answer text to supporting sources | Evidence a reader can actually verify |
This is a working model. Products can repeat searches, revisit sources or identify additional supporting pages while writing, rather than follow a single rigid sequence.
That makes page architecture important. Searchmaxxed builds product, industry, comparison and integration pages because each answers a different part of a buyer's question. A homepage cannot explain everything.
What is query fan-out, and why does it change which pages compete?
Query fan-out means expanding a question into related searches across subtopics and data sources. Google documents this for its Search features.
Prompts and searches can differ. OpenAI likewise explains that ChatGPT can send rewritten queries to search providers, then run more specific searches after reviewing results.
Consider a hypothetical enterprise SaaS purchase:
> Which procurement platforms support approval workflows, integrate with our ERP and offer Australian data residency?
Possible research questions include ERP compatibility, approval routing and hosting arrangements. These searches are illustrative.
A general procurement guide might explain workflows. Your integration documentation could answer compatibility, while your security page establishes where particular data is stored. Different pages do different jobs.
The commercial consequence is straightforward. A competitor can supply useful evidence for part of the answer without owning the broad category query you track every Monday.
Don't build a page for every wording. Build a distinct page where the underlying question needs distinct evidence, and link closely related answers together for the reader.
This is where Searchmaxxed's comparison, industry and integration page work fits. We connect those pages to the actual product facts, rather than repeating the category description under new headings.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews differ?
Their documented search and citation behaviour differs by product and mode, so the same company can offer experiences with different source links and controls. Google's consumer assistant, developer API and Search features should not be treated as one system.
The table separates what providers document from what you should check on your pages. No unpublished weights are assigned.
| Product | What official documentation says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | May rewrite queries, use search partners and run follow-up searches | Searchbot access and pages answering specific buyer questions |
| Google AI Overviews | May use query fan-out; supporting pages need indexing and snippet eligibility | Google indexing, snippet controls and useful supporting content |
| Gemini Apps | May show sources and related links; some responses have none | Whether a displayed link supports the particular claim |
| Gemini API with Google Search grounding | Can generate searches and return citations attached to answer text | The enabled tool and returned citation annotations |
| Perplexity | Describes interpreting questions, searching, summarising and adding numbered citations | The actual mode, cited URLs and surrounding answer |
Why does ChatGPT cite some sites but not others?
ChatGPT ranks search results using factors intended to find relevant, reliable information. OpenAI does not publish a complete citation-selection formula in its search help documentation.
What it does document is useful. OpenAI's web-search API guide distinguishes the complete retrieved-source list from the smaller set of inline citations.
Being retrieved is not enough. The API documentation describes inline citations as the most relevant references, rather than a receipt for every page consulted during the search.
There is another reporting trap. ChatGPT's Sources panel can contain cited sources and other relevant links, so a panel entry isn't necessarily a citation supporting a particular sentence.
For the implementation checklist, see how to rank in ChatGPT. Access, retrieval and attribution are different.
Does Gemini choose sources the same way as AI Overviews?
Google does not document an identical selection process across Gemini Apps and AI Overviews. Even AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques.
Keep the surfaces separate. Gemini's developer documentation explains how Google Search grounding connects generated answer text to source URLs through citation annotations.
Grounding means basing an answer on identifiable external information. It describes the relationship between the answer and its evidence, not an automatic certificate of accuracy.
The consumer app needs separate treatment. Gemini Apps help says responses may include sources and related content, and some include neither.
Search has a clearer eligibility baseline. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, according to Search Central's AI features documentation.
Our AI Overviews ranking guide covers the page-level implementation. Adding a special AI schema type isn't part of Google's stated requirements.
What does Perplexity disclose about source selection?
Perplexity describes understanding the question, searching the web, summarising relevant information and adding numbered source links. Search and Research differ too.
It doesn't disclose the whole formula. Perplexity's explanation describes Research as iterative work across searches and sources, not merely a longer version of one result.
Record the mode when comparing answers. A Research report and a standard search response are different observations, even when both begin with the same buyer question.
What makes a page useful enough to cite?
A useful source answers the specific question and provides evidence for the claim in the answer. Check access, relevance and evidence separately.
There is no public universal scorecard. The providers cited here do not publish a shared threshold for word count, domain authority, backlinks or the number of named entities.
For page work, use this distinction:
| Evidence-backed starting point | Practical page change | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Google recommends important content in text | Put product facts in readable page copy | A paragraph length determines citation selection |
| Google recommends useful internal links | Connect product pages to integration and security documentation | Every linked page will enter an answer |
| OpenAI describes relevance and reliability | Answer the precise question with supporting evidence | A third-party authority score is OpenAI's scoring system |
| Grounding links claims to external information | Keep qualifications beside the claim they limit | Any citation proves the whole paragraph correct |
| Google says schema should match visible content | Describe the actual page accurately | Special AI markup overrides the page's substance |
Clear headings and tables help readers inspect your evidence. Treat them as editorial choices, not confirmed ranking multipliers that operate identically across all the products discussed here.
The same applies to freshness. Update a specification when the product changes, and state its applicable version rather than changing the date on an otherwise untouched page.
Searchmaxxed's on-page work combines that factual clarity with technical SEO, internal links and structured data. The source must be useful.
What would you change on an enterprise product page?
Replace broad claims with answers that specify the product, capability, conditions and supporting document. Keep each limitation beside the claim instead of burying it elsewhere.
Here is a worked example. The SaaS company is hypothetical, and every proposed statement below would need confirmation from its product or security owner before publication.
The existing page says:
> Enterprise procurement software with flexible approvals, ERP connectivity and secure hosting.
That's a category description. It doesn't settle whether the product supports the buyer's approval rules, which ERP connection exists, or what the hosting statement actually covers.
Use this claim-to-source worksheet:
| Buyer question | Page content to establish | Evidence and owner |
|---|---|---|
| Does it work with our ERP? | Named integration, supported deployment and sync direction | Integration documentation; product owner |
| Can approvals follow our purchasing rules? | Supported routing conditions and exceptions | Workflow guide; product owner |
| Can our data stay in Australia? | Which data, environments and subprocessors the answer covers | Hosting statement; security owner |
| What happens during migration? | Included data types, exclusions and customer responsibilities | Migration guide; implementation owner |
| Is it suitable for our procurement policy? | Specific controls and available assurance documents | Compliance page; security or legal owner |
Don't invent stronger claims. If only the production database stays in Australia, a blanket statement that all customer data stays there would misrepresent the product.
A better page makes the boundary explicit. Link the integration claim to its documentation, identify the hosting scope, and explain which questions require a technical discussion before purchase.
Then follow the evidence through an answer. If an assistant cites the integration page but says nothing about residency, inspect the hosting evidence rather than rewriting the whole product page.
The worksheet makes review concrete. It gives content, product and security teams a shared object to review, while keeping each public statement attached to an owner.
Searchmaxxed can build these connected pages and implement the technical work. Your specialists supply the product truth; our SEO and AI search work makes it accessible and clear.
Why might AI cite your page without recommending your business?
A citation credits a source; a recommendation expresses a preference or fit. An assistant can cite your documentation while recommending another product for the buyer's circumstances.
Read the surrounding sentence. A source might support an integration fact, a limitation or a comparison, none of which automatically makes the cited company the preferred supplier.
Accuracy matters as much as presence. Liu and colleagues' 2023 research separates citation completeness from citation correctness when evaluating generative search engines.
Those are different tests. Does every factual statement have support, and does the cited source actually support the statement attached to it in the answer?
It is a historical study. Its distinction is still useful when reviewing whether an answer has represented your product accurately for a prospective buyer.
Likewise, the 2025 paper on attribution in LLM search distinguishes relevant pages consumed from pages credited. Retrieval and citation cannot be counted as the same event.
Return to the SaaS example. “Supports this ERP” and “best fit for this procurement team” describe very different commercial outcomes from the same source link.
How can you diagnose why your website isn't being cited?
Diagnose what you can observe. No visible link does not prove the model failed to retrieve your page.
Keep a dated record of the question, product, mode, market, answer, links and supported claims, so another person can inspect exactly what happened. Repeat comparable checks rather than drawing conclusions from one favourable screenshot.
| What you observe | What it establishes | What to investigate next |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler blocked or page unavailable | An access problem exists | Robots rules, hosting controls and rendered content |
| Google page not indexed or snippet-ineligible | Google's supporting-link eligibility is not met | Indexing and snippet controls |
| No visible citation | The answer didn't visibly credit your page | Relevant sources, answer scope and observable retrieval records |
| URL retrieved but not cited in available logs | Retrieval happened without visible attribution | Whether the page supplies distinctive, relevant evidence |
| Citation supports the wrong claim | The answer misrepresents the evidence | Ambiguity, outdated facts and missing qualifications |
| Brand cited but not recommended | Source credit did not become preference | Product fit and the buyer's stated constraints |
Search access and training access also differ. OpenAI's crawler documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot for search from GPTBot for potential model training.
Those settings are independent. Blocking training access does not require blocking search access, so your technical team should evaluate each control against the business's actual policy.
Google's AI Overviews use Googlebot controls for Search. Review the rules for the specific product instead of assuming one blanket “AI bots” setting covers every intended use.
At Searchmaxxed, AI-answer observations sit beside rankings, Search Console, analytics and conversion evidence, so page decisions reflect search performance rather than a citation count alone. A citation tells us something about visibility; enquiries tell us something else.

Frequently asked questions
What are the sources of data in AI answers?
AI answers can draw on model training, conversation context and retrieved information. Depending on the product, retrieval can involve webpages, uploaded files or connected business documents.
Can AI make up sources?
Yes. AI can produce incorrect references, and a real link can still fail to support the associated claim. Open the source and check the evidence.
Are ChatGPT references accurate?
Not always. OpenAI says search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. Verify the specific claim, not just whether the link opens successfully.
Does allowing GPTBot help my website appear in ChatGPT search?
GPTBot controls potential training use. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its automatic search crawler, which means the search decision can be kept separate from your policy on model training. The settings are independent.
Do AI Overviews need special schema or an llms.txt file?
No. Google says its AI Search features require no new AI text files or special schema. Keep existing markup accurate.
Can I tell whether AI read my page without citing it?
Sometimes, if the product exposes retrieval records. OpenAI's web-search API can return retrieved sources separately from inline citations, allowing a developer to compare those records for the particular response being examined. Consumer answers expose less.
Should Australian and US teams track identical prompts?
Keep the questions comparable. Hosting arrangements, procurement requirements and product availability can change what Australian and US buyers need, even when they are searching for the same software. Record each market separately.
What should you do next?
Start with a product question your website should answer, then identify the exact page and evidence that establish the answer. That gives the work a clear target.
