TLDR

Most established Australian businesses pay $1,500 to $5,000 a month for SEO.[1] The price depends on your market's competition, your reach and how much the agency builds.

Your businessPer month
Local business, one location$1,000–$2,000
Competitive city market$2,500–$5,000
National, ecommerce or multi-location$5,000–$15,000+
One-off audit (not monthly)$795–$5,000

Get two or three quotes. Ask each agency what goes live each month, who builds it and whether GST is included. Searchmaxxed quotes each business after looking at its site and market. Let's talk pricing.

In Australia, SEO costs $1,500 to $5,000 or more a month for most ongoing campaigns, and $500 to $1,000 a month for entry work.[1][2] StudioHawk puts national and ecommerce work at $5,000 or more a month.[2] The price follows the work: the pages, fixes and links, and who does them.

I'm Brenden House and I run Searchmaxxed, so our packages come first in the comparisons below. We do agentic SEO. AI agents plug into your Search Console and GA4, and check your competitors and AI answers every week. Our Managed Search Loop picks the next job, and a person checks every change. My advice: compare what goes live, not just the invoice.

How much does SEO cost in Australia per month?

Firewire Digital publishes Australian market guidance of $1,500-$5,000+ monthly, excluding GST.[1] StudioHawk's entry tier is $500-$1,000 monthly, with GST unstated.[2] These AUD figures describe different workloads, so keep the scope attached.

Those bands cover different services.[1][2] Compare their own descriptions before treating any range as your budget.

Each row is that publisher's guidance. None establishes a national survey average. I wouldn't combine local maintenance and enterprise work into one spending target.

Each bar is one publisher's own monthly guidance. GST treatment differs; the table above shows it. Captured 6 October 2026.

For your proposal, ask the team to name the constraint first. Which service page needs rebuilding? Which technical fault blocks the work? Which location needs its own search plan?

Our SEO service runs that diagnosis through the Managed Search Loop, then we build and check the agreed changes.

What do published SEO packages across Australia include?

I compare SEO packages by the work each seller commits to. Searchmaxxed goes first because I run it. The other rows preserve each provider's own scope, billing unit and GST note.

Digital Marketing Tribe's own page identifies offices in Adelaide and Sydney.[9] For Perth hourly work, All Marketing publishes $150/hour plus GST, captured 6 October 2026.[3]

A missing public fee tells you to request scope and a quote. It doesn't tell you whether a provider delivers good work. We quote Searchmaxxed after reviewing the site, market and goals.

SEO Company Canberra also publishes Local AU at $1,295/month and GLOBAL from $1,795/month; GST remains unstated.[7] Those plans specify 20-25 and 30+ target keywords, respectively.[7] Ask how those targets translate into pages and work each month.

Digital Marketing Tribe and netStripes publish different package scopes. Fees are AUD plus GST; captured 28 September and 6 October 2026.

The chart compares published fees, not delivery quality. Digital Marketing Tribe's tiers are $1,200, $2,000 and $3,500 monthly plus GST.[8] netStripes publishes $1,588, $2,294 and $3,294 monthly plus GST.[16]

What should each SEO price level buy?

I would judge each price level by the problem it pays someone to fix. At Searchmaxxed, the Managed Search Loop connects that problem to a release we can check. The seller examples show how much scope can change within the same broad budget.

Entry work: a defined local job

StudioHawk describes $500-$1,000 monthly as entry work: a basic audit, light page fixes and limited citations or links.[2] Its guide doesn't say whether GST is included.[2]

For a concrete seller offer, SEO Company Canberra's $800/month Local CITY plan includes onsite optimisation, a backlink audit, citations and ranking reports.[7] It doesn't state GST.[7]

At this level, I would ask for the priority service, the pages someone will change and the work they will leave for later. A narrow scope gives you a job to judge. An all-inclusive promise gives you something much harder to check.

Local and small-business campaigns: profile plus website

Digital Marketing Tribe's $1,200/month Starter includes Business Profile optimisation and on-page work on up to five pages.[8] GST is extra.[8] Rise's $1,200/month Local adds one monthly article and technical foundations; its page doesn't state GST.[10]

Those are different commitments at the same headline fee. Ask whether the five-page allowance means initial optimisation or fresh work every month. Ask who writes and publishes the article.

When comparing local SEO, separate profile work from service-page work. Our Local Search package combines page releases with profile management, reviews, local links and tracking.

Growth work: content and fixes with a stated cadence

netStripes prices Growth at $2,294/month plus GST.[16] It specifies ten key pages, two monthly blogs, technical work, weekly backlink building and competitor monitoring.[16]

Rise's Growth costs $2,400/month, with GST not stated.[10] It specifies four monthly articles and 3-5 monthly link placements.[10]

Ask which content serves a buying search and which supports it. Request the first release list, including the person who handles development. A blog count alone leaves those questions open.

National, ecommerce and multi-location work: more scope to manage

Digital Marketing Tribe's $3,500/month Accelerator adds multi-location or ecommerce scope and three monthly blogs; GST is extra.[8] Rise's Scale starts at $4,800+/month and adds eight or more articles, conversion experiments and a dedicated senior strategist.[10] Rise doesn't state GST.[10]

StudioHawk places broader technical, content and digital PR work in its $5,000+ monthly guidance tier.[2] GST isn't stated.[2]

I would ask for the number of markets, the page types and the technical work that the fee must cover. Then ask which team member can ship each change. Our Agentic Search Engineering package adds production capacity and off-page work to the Growth System; the scope table below separates them.

Compare the work behind the label: local profiles, buying pages, technical fixes and external sources.

Why is SEO so expensive?

SEO costs rise with the work required: competition, site condition, geographic reach, content and external links. Firewire and StudioHawk identify these drivers in their guides.[17][18] At Searchmaxxed, we examine them before recommending scope.

A proposal should explain the job behind each cost:

  • Site repairs: ask which crawl, speed or indexing faults the team will fix. StudioHawk identifies site health as a cost driver.[18] Our technical SEO work includes building and checking the approved changes.
  • More services or markets: ask which pages each market needs. Firewire identifies national reach, ecommerce complexity and competition as workload drivers.[17]
  • Content: ask for the pages and their purpose. Our content strategy connects search evidence to pages with distinct jobs.
  • External sources: ask what the outreach fee covers and what remains separate. StudioHawk includes links, mentions and digital PR in its broader scope.[2] Our link-building work forms part of the Off-Page Source Layer.
  • Implementation: name the person who changes the site. StudioHawk's proposal checklist asks who handles uploads, technical changes and outreach.[19]

For our team, the Managed Search Loop ranks the next job using evidence, delivery cost and release risk. We can then explain why a page rebuild comes before more content, or why a technical repair comes first.

Should you pay monthly, hourly or per project?

Choose monthly SEO for work you want a team to keep running. Choose hourly help when you can implement the advice. Choose a project for a defined repair, audit or migration. StudioHawk and Firewire distinguish these billing models in their guides.[2][20]

StudioHawk's broader consulting guidance is $150-$300/hour, with GST not stated.[2] Its project examples include audits at $2,000-$5,000 and migrations at $3,000-$10,000; GST is not stated.[2]

For an SEO audit, establish whether you're buying diagnosis, fixes or both. Lucky 44's offer includes fixes.[5] SEO Company Canberra publishes a separate $295 audit with guidance; GST is not stated.[22]

I would compare hourly quotes using the tasks, the person doing them and the estimate cap. For an output-based quote, compare the promised releases and acceptance criteria. Hours alone won't tell you whether someone finished the job.

Keep recurring delivery, consulting time and one-off repairs separate when comparing quotes.

What are the red flags in cheap SEO?

I would reject a Searchmaxxed proposal that left the shipped work unclear. Apply the same check elsewhere: ask for the pages, fixes, source work and reporting before deciding whether cheap SEO fits.

StudioHawk describes its low-price entry tier as light work with limited links.[2] A modest scope can be a fair purchase. The warning is a promise of a much larger job without a plan to deliver it.

Before signing, ask:

  • Which pages will change, and who will publish them?
  • Will the team fix technical faults or send recommendations to your developer?
  • What does link work mean: outreach, placements or directory records?
  • Can you see the changed pages and live sources?
  • Which enquiries or sales will the team track?
  • What can you export if you leave?

Firewire flags vague deliverables, absent reporting and guaranteed #1 rankings in its proposal checklist.[23] I would ask for the actual target searches before accepting a performance-linked payment clause.

Cheap content needs a quality check too. Google asks whether content adds original information and value beyond rewriting other sources.[24] It also distinguishes curated work from mass generation with little oversight.[25] At Searchmaxxed, a person approves each public change before release.

A long contract deserves a separate reading. Compare the start date, milestones, notice period, exit charges and ownership. Treat contract length as a term to assess against the scope, not proof of quality by itself.

How do you compare SEO proposals like for like?

Use a worksheet that separates the fee from the work. At Searchmaxxed, our Managed Search Loop adds the reason for each release and the check after it. Ask every provider to answer the same fields using your site and target market.

Proposal fieldWhat to request in writing
GoalPriority products, services and locations; enquiries or sales to track
Starting pointSite faults, missing pages and competitors shaping the plan
First workInitial changes, owners and release dates
Monthly outputNew pages versus rebuilds; editing versus publication; any volume commitment
Technical workDiagnosis, developer handover or completed fixes
Links and sourcesPlanned actions, approval, separate spend and verification
ReportingSearch Console, GA4 and conversion access; work completed; next decision
Total priceCurrency, billing unit, GST, setup charges and separate costs
TermsMinimum term, notice, exit charges and ownership

StudioHawk's published checklist covers scope, deliverables, milestones, reporting and implementation ownership.[19] The worksheet makes those questions concrete enough to send back with a proposal.

Keep the response beside the price. If a provider promises page optimisation, ask whether they mean existing-page edits or new pages. If they promise links, ask whether the fee pays for outreach or completed placements.

For weekly quotes, request the billing calendar and total commitment. SEO Guys publishes Basic packages from $500/week plus $1,000 setup, excluding GST.[12] Keep that weekly unit until the seller confirms how it invoices.

Firewire's guide gives its own GST example: a $2,500 ex-GST campaign invoices at $2,750.[1] A quote with unstated GST needs clarification before you compare totals.

Diagram of four proposal checks: scope and fee, who ships it, how you check it and what you own
Send every provider the same questions, then compare their written commitments.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

I would fund SEO when customers search for the offer and the margin can support the work. Searchmaxxed starts with those business facts. Firewire's guide also ties the decision to demand, margins and the competitive opportunity.[23]

Google says SEO can help engines discover and understand people-first content.[26] Your business still needs to judge its cost against the customers it brings.

Before Searchmaxxed, I built Radiant Roof Repairs from zero to more than $1 million a year in revenue. SEO was the only marketing channel. I did the pages, research, competitor checks and updates manually. The Radiant Roof Repairs case study covers that work.

For your own decision, use gross profit and the full cost of search:

Break-even additional customers = search cost for the chosen period ÷ gross profit per additional customer.

Use the same period on both sides. Include setup and implementation costs in your spend. Then test how many enquiries would become customers using your own close rate.

Keep the result as a planning threshold. Track actual enquiries, customers and margin as the work runs. At Searchmaxxed, the Managed Search Loop combines Search Console, GA4 and sales feedback to choose the next change.

If you need sales this week, I would separate that immediate need from the SEO investment. Firewire makes the same timing distinction in its guide.[23]

What does Searchmaxxed include in its SEO packages?

Searchmaxxed's managed SEO packages combine the Agentic Website, Managed Search Loop and Off-Page Source Layer. The site gives us somewhere to ship changes. The loop chooses and checks the work. The source layer develops the external records around your business.

We connect agents to your Search Console and GA4. Every week, they read competitors' sites, Google results and AI answers. We use that evidence to find the missing page, technical fault or source gap that deserves attention.

On your Agentic Website, we build pages, technical fixes, structured data and internal links. Structured data states page facts in a form machines can read. You own the website, repository, content and data.

The Managed Search Loop moves from measurement to diagnosis, then chooses the next job. We build and review the change. A person approves it before release. We check the live result and feed the new evidence into the next cycle.

Our Off-Page Source Layer develops links, reviews, citations, press and mentions on other sites. We keep the business facts consistent and verify the sources that go live.

AEO is work for answer engines. GEO is work for generated answers. Both sit inside our managed packages, alongside Google search work.

Searchmaxxed loop: search data feeds the Managed Search Loop, a person approves each change, and measurement feeds back
Searchmaxxed: evidence selects the job, a person approves the change, and measurement guides the next release.

Our package scopes differ in page capacity and off-page work:

PackageIncluded scope
Local SearchAt least eight monthly page releases; daily Business Profile management; reviews; local links and citation cleanup; local press and tracking
Growth System30 monthly page releases; optimisation of up to four existing landing pages; source basics; one qualified link action; AI tracking
Agentic Search EngineeringGrowth System scope with 50 monthly page releases; comparison, industry and integration pages; continuous PR and link campaigns; wider AI tracking
Custom & EnterpriseAgreed scope for multiple markets, dedicated engineering, custom reporting and original research

A page release means an approved new page or a substantial rebuild. Technical, schema, internal-link, measurement and Source Layer work don't reduce the Growth System's page commitment.

Every managed package includes ongoing diagnostics, a 90-day plan with weekly releases, handled implementation and a monthly decision memo. You speak with the people doing the work. A person approves every public change.

For entry, the Agentic Website Full Build covers research, architecture, design, technical setup and measurement. Agentic Migration keeps a design worth keeping and moves the site to an owned repository. The AI SEO Audit identifies the gaps, prioritises fixes and supplies the plan.

We recommend scope after reviewing your website, market and goals. Let's talk pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO usually cost?

Firewire Digital's guide gives $1,500-$5,000+ monthly, excluding GST, for ongoing Australian campaigns.[1] StudioHawk describes $500-$1,000 entry work and $1,500-$3,000 growth work; it doesn't state GST.[2] Treat these as guidance, then ask for a quote based on your site.

How much should a small business pay for SEO?

Match the budget to a defined job. Digital Marketing Tribe's Starter costs $1,200/month + GST for local profile work and up to five pages.[8] Rise's Local costs $1,200/month with one article monthly; GST is not stated.[10] Ask which commitment addresses your site's current problem.

How much should I pay for local SEO?

Separate profile setup from recurring website and local work. Loudachris publishes $750 + GST for one-off profile optimisation and $800 + GST/month for one monthly syndication.[6] It prices two monthly syndications at $1,450 + GST/month.[6] Searchmaxxed's Local Search combines page releases, profile work, reviews and local sources.

How much do SEO consultants charge per hour?

All Marketing publishes its own rate of $150/hour plus GST.[3] StudioHawk's market guidance is $150-$300/hour, with GST not stated.[2] Ask for the tasks, the hour cap and who implements the advice.

Should I pay monthly or buy a one-off SEO project?

Buy a project for a defined repair; choose monthly work when you want ongoing delivery. Lucky 44 publishes a $795 + GST audit/fix service and a $3,000 + GST three-month repair.[5][21] Its monthly SEO starts at $1,500 + GST/month.[11] Confirm the repair scope before comparing it with a retainer.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an SEO agency?

Loudachris gives freelancer guidance of around $500-$1,200 monthly and specialist agency guidance of around $1,500-$4,000 monthly.[6] It doesn't state GST for those bands.[6] They don't compare equal scopes. Ask who covers writing, development, links and reporting before choosing by fee.

How much does on-page SEO cost?

netStripes publishes one-time on-page SEO at $2,850 + GST.[16] That is a whole-job price. Ask for the page list, the edits and the implementation boundary before comparing it with a monthly service.

Do Australian SEO prices include GST?

The seller's stated treatment controls the comparison. Digital Marketing Tribe adds GST; SEO Guys excludes GST; Rise's tiers don't state it.[8][12][10] Ask for the invoice total whenever the quote leaves tax unclear.

Why is SEO so expensive?

SEO can require research, writing, technical repairs and external source work in the same campaign. StudioHawk names competition, site health, reach and content among its cost drivers.[18] At Searchmaxxed, the Managed Search Loop selects the next job from evidence. Ask what the fee pays someone to complete.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

I would judge SEO by search demand, gross profit and the cost of acquiring customers. Firewire uses demand and margins in its worth-it discussion.[23] Our Managed Search Loop connects Search Console and GA4 with conversion and sales feedback. Your own numbers decide whether continuing the work makes sense.

Who is the best SEO in Australia?

My pick is Searchmaxxed when you want our team to build and run the website and source work. I run it, so this is my recommendation. Our Agentic Website, Managed Search Loop and Off-Page Source Layer explain the scope. Compare that scope with the implementation your business needs.

Do I need a long SEO contract?

Compare the term with the work and your ability to review it. Rise advertises month-to-month tiers without an exit fee; Digital Marketing Tribe says cancel anytime, with 30 days' notice.[10][8] Searchmaxxed agrees monthly, six-month or 12-month terms on the call. Read the notice and ownership clauses before signing.

Does SEO pricing include AI search work?

Check the specific offer. Digital Marketing Tribe prices AI Search Optimisation as an add-on from $1,200/month + GST.[27] Searchmaxxed includes AEO and GEO in managed packages. Agents check AI answers weekly; people select and approve the website and source changes.

What do I own after a Searchmaxxed SEO engagement?

You own the site, repository, content and data from day one. The Agentic Website runs on GitHub and Vercel. We operate the Managed Search Loop and Off-Page Source Layer within the agreed scope. Ask any provider to state ownership and export access in the proposal.
