To get cited by Perplexity, let PerplexityBot reach your pages, then publish pages that answer one specific question in their opening lines. Keep them current. Then earn mentions on the sites Perplexity already trusts in your category, such as review platforms, trade press, industry lists and forums. Perplexity searches its own index for every question and ranks what it finds before citing only a handful of the sources it read. So Perplexity SEO is good SEO, plus a reputation on other people's websites.
I'm Brenden House, and I run Searchmaxxed, an SEO and AI SEO agency. On 27 October 2026 (AEST) I read Perplexity's own documentation and the pages ranking for this search in Australia and the US.
In summary
Perplexity cites pages it can crawl, that answer the exact question, and that other trusted sites back up.
| Lever | What to do |
|---|---|
| Access | Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN |
| Pages | One question per page, answered in the first two sentences, with dated facts |
| Freshness | Update pages when facts change, and show the date |
| Other sites | Reviews, trade press, industry lists and forum threads that name you |
| Tracking | A fixed set of buyer questions, run every month, with cited URLs recorded |
- Perplexity runs on its own index, which it says covers "hundreds of billions of webpages". No crawl, no citation.
- Review platforms and directories carry more weight in Perplexity than in ChatGPT, as our own panel further down shows.
- Check access before content: robots.txt, then your firewall, then Perplexity's published IP ranges.
- There's no Search Console for Perplexity. You measure it by asking the same buyer questions every month and checking who gets the citation.
What is Perplexity SEO?
Perplexity SEO is the work of getting your pages cited, and your company named, in Perplexity's answers. It's one part of answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO), which cover the same job across every AI search tool.
A few terms first:
- Perplexity is an AI answer engine: you ask a question and it writes an answer with numbered citations linking to its sources.
- An answer engine gives you a written answer instead of a list of links.
- A citation is the numbered link beside a claim in the answer. It's the click, and the credit.
- PerplexityBot is Perplexity's crawler. It fetches the pages that feed Perplexity's own search index and results.
- Perplexity-User is the fetcher Perplexity sends when someone's question needs a live look at a page.
- AEO (answer engine optimisation) means structuring pages so answer engines can lift a direct answer from them, word for word, with your name attached.
- GEO (generative engine optimisation) means making your business the one AI tools name when they write an answer.
For a B2B marketing lead, it's concrete. A buyer asks Perplexity for "the best procurement software for mid-market manufacturers". Does your product appear, and whose page gets the citation? That's what we track for clients, and it's what this guide helps you change.
How does Perplexity choose which sources to cite?
For each question, Perplexity searches its own index and ranks the pages it retrieves before a language model writes an answer citing the strongest few. Relevance to the exact question comes first. After that, freshness, the trust Perplexity gives a domain and how easy a page is to quote decide who makes the cut.
Perplexity describes the process in four steps:
- It reads the question. Its help centre says it uses models "like GPT-5 and Claude 4.6 Sonnet" to understand the query.
- It searches. Perplexity's Search API runs on "the same global-scale infrastructure that powers Perplexity's public answer engine", an index covering "hundreds of billions of webpages".
- It picks sources. Perplexity publishes no ranking formula, so this step stays a black box.
- It writes and cites. "Each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources," the help centre says.
Depth changes with the mode. Research mode "performs dozens of searches automatically, reads hundreds of sources" and returns a report in two to four minutes. So a buyer building a vendor shortlist in Research mode reads far more of the web than someone asking one quick question.
Perplexity labels some sources as Government, Academic or Trusted
Few guides mention this. Perplexity's help centre explains that some citations carry a small shield icon with one of three labels: Government, Academic or Trusted. It rates whole domains, not pages. It checks that news stays apart from advertising and opinion. Its review asks questions like "Does the site correct its mistakes?" and "Does it say who wrote each piece?"
Money doesn't buy a label. In Perplexity's words, "partnerships, payments, and other business arrangements do not affect a site's label." Having no label "is not a negative judgment" either.
What does that mean for your company? Your own domain probably won't carry a label, but the trade publications, standards bodies and government sites covering your industry might. When one names you, that counts. Public-sector teams start ahead here, because Perplexity's Government label covers the official websites of government organisations, which can include your own agency's site.
What the leaked ranking research says, and how far to trust it
Researcher Metehan Yesilyurt published what he described as Perplexity's ranking patterns, from studying its browser traffic. Search Engine Land covered it with a caveat: the research is "albeit unverified at this point". Treat it as clues:
| Reported signal | What Yesilyurt describes | How I'd use it |
|---|---|---|
| Entity reranking | A stricter machine-learning filter for searches about people, companies and topics; weak result sets get dropped | Make your company's facts consistent everywhere they appear |
| Trusted domains | Manual lists of authoritative domains, such as Amazon, GitHub, LinkedIn and Coursera | Keep your profiles on big platforms accurate and active |
| Time decay | Visibility falls away without updates | Update key pages when facts change |
| Early engagement | Early clicks shape long-term visibility | Promote new pages to your own audience on launch |
| Topic clusters | Linked groups of pages rank better together | Build a cluster of pages around each product or use case |
Search Engine Land's editor summed it up: "it sure sounds like doing the SEO fundamentals." I agree. No tricks required.
Can PerplexityBot reach your website?
Probably. Check anyway, because a blocked crawler is the one problem no amount of good content can fix. Perplexity's own advice: "to ensure your site appears in search results", allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permit its published IP ranges.
Read your robots.txt to be sure, but on most sites it isn't the problem.
Firewalls are a different story, and harder to see from outside. Perplexity's crawler documentation warns that behind a web application firewall, "you may need to explicitly whitelist Perplexity's bots". Then it gives Cloudflare and AWS rules. Google agrees. Its list of basics starts with "ensuring that crawling is allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure".
Cloudflare moved its defaults again this year. From 15 September 2026, new Cloudflare domains block AI "Training" and "Agent" bots by default on pages with ads. "Search" bots stay allowed. Its Agent group covers chat fetchers such as ChatGPT-User, and Perplexity-User does the same job for Perplexity's users. Most B2B sites carry no ads, so they're unaffected, but a site that ticked an older "block AI bots" setting deserves a fresh look.
Hand this to IT:
- Open
yourdomain.com/robots.txtand search it for PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, and anyUser-agent: *block that saysDisallow: /. - Ask the security team whether your WAF or bot-management tool blocks PerplexityBot or Perplexity-User.
- Check your logs for PerplexityBot.
- Confirm those pages show their full text without JavaScript, because a crawler may not run your scripts.
- Put key pages in your XML sitemap and link to them from related product, industry and support pages across the site.
We check all five in every technical SEO engagement. In large organisations, the culprit is often a security setting nobody ever connected to marketing.
What kind of page does Perplexity cite?
Perplexity cites pages that answer the exact question in their first sentences, with specific facts it can quote. Vague pages lose. A page covering your whole product in general terms gives way to a page that answers one buyer's question precisely, with numbers.
Here's what the top-ranking guides agree on, and what we build into every page:
- One question per page. "Does [product] integrate with SAP S/4HANA?" deserves its own page, not a line in a features grid.
- The answer in the first two sentences, then the detail, the conditions and the exceptions.
- Question headings, in buyers' words.
- Numbers with units, sources and dates. "Lead time: 6 to 8 weeks for runs under 500 units, as of October 2026" quotes cleanly. "Fast turnaround" doesn't.
- Tables for every comparison you make. Specs, plans, tolerances and compliance standards all belong in tables, where an engine can read each row as a fact.
- A named author and a visible updated date, the same things Perplexity's source labels look for.
- Structured data that matches the page, such as Organization, Product and FAQPage schema.
- Internal links from related pages.
A worked example: one manufacturer, one question
Take a manufacturer of stainless-steel pumps. A procurement engineer opens Perplexity and asks: "Which centrifugal pumps are rated for food-grade use in Australia?"
The manufacturer has a product range page, a brochure PDF and one line that reads "hygienic options available". Nothing to quote. Meanwhile a distributor's page lists each model and the standard it meets, in a table, so the distributor wins the citation and probably the enquiry.
The fix: one page per question. Call this one "Food-grade centrifugal pumps" and name the models, standards and materials in its opening sentence. Add a table of model, flow rate, materials and certification, with a named engineer as author and a date. Link it from related pages. A buyer who asks Google the same question will land on that page too, which is why this work pays you twice.
That's the core of our AEO service. We find the questions your buyers put to AI tools and check who gets the citation today. Then we build the pages that answer them.
Why do review sites and directories matter so much on Perplexity?
Perplexity leans on third-party directories and review platforms far more than ChatGPT does. Your profiles there can matter as much as your own pages. Our panel showed the gap:
> "Perplexity cited a review directory (Semrush Agencies, Clutch, DesignRush and the like) in 36 of 44 agency answers. ChatGPT did it in 20 and Claude in 15. One agency's Clutch profile had six reviews and was cited 20 times."
We ran that panel on 29 September 2026, on questions about choosing an agency. We haven't tested software or manufacturing. I'd expect the pattern to carry over. In B2B software, G2, Capterra and analyst lists would play the directory role; in manufacturing, supplier directories, trade associations and industry press. Test your own category first.
If it holds, three things follow for your team:
- Keep every profile accurate. Product names, categories, integrations and descriptions should match your website word for word.
- Earn genuine reviews. As the panel shows, a small profile can go a long way.
- Get named in the articles Perplexity already cites. Run your top buyer questions and note which publications and lists keep appearing. Then work out why you're missing.
Agencies help with the third. Digital PR and link building put your company into trade press, industry roundups and expert commentary. Perplexity reads exactly those pages when a buyer asks for a shortlist. We start that work from the sources the AI answers in your category already cite.
Community sources count too. The guides ranking for this search point to Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn. Perplexity itself says it gathers information "from authoritative sources like articles, websites, and journals". A genuine expert answer in a forum thread can earn a citation for questions your website never addresses.
How is Perplexity SEO different from ChatGPT SEO and Google AI Overviews?
The pages stay the same. What changes is the crawler you allow, the outside sources each engine leans on, and the controls you use to manage access.
| Perplexity | ChatGPT search | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawler to allow | PerplexityBot (index), Perplexity-User (live fetches) | OAI-SearchBot | Googlebot |
| Where answers come from | Perplexity's own index, which it says covers hundreds of billions of pages | OpenAI's search results | Google's index |
| Extra requirements | Allow its crawlers and published IP ranges | Allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results | Google: "There are no additional technical requirements" |
| Separate training crawler | Perplexity says PerplexityBot "is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models" | GPTBot, which OpenAI runs apart from OAI-SearchBot | Google-Extended, for training and grounding in Google's other systems; Googlebot rules still control AI Overviews |
OpenAI says each of its crawler settings "is independent of the others". So you can allow OAI-SearchBot for search and still block GPTBot from training. Perplexity draws the same line between search crawling and model training, saying PerplexityBot isn't for training.
Working on ChatGPT as well? Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT covers its side.
How do you track Perplexity citations?
You track Perplexity by asking it the same buyer questions every month, recording which pages it cites and which companies it names. Then you check analytics for the visits and enquiries those answers send. There's no Search Console for Perplexity.
A setup any marketing team can run:
- Write 20 to 50 buyer questions: category, comparison, "best for", integration and compliance questions.
- Run each one monthly, at least twice. Answers vary between runs, so one run on one day tells you almost nothing about where you stand.
- Record cited URLs and named companies.
- Group the citations by source type, such as your site, competitor sites, review platforms, press and forums.
- Check analytics for sessions from perplexity.ai, and the enquiries they bring.
Careful with step five. Bots can make AI traffic look far bigger than it is, as we found on an enterprise B2B client's account:
> "A client's GA4 showed AI-assistant visits jump from 354 to 6,050 in a month. Almost none of it was real. About 5,700 came in three one-hour bursts: same 1920x1080 desktop Chrome, all new users, no referrer, about 20 seconds each, landing on two pages. Real AI traffic was 385 sessions against 354 the month before, roughly flat."
Anyone reporting from that chart would have announced a seventeenfold win. Judge Perplexity work on citations and enquiries over a full quarter, never one month, and check every spike in AI traffic for bots. If you'd rather use software than spreadsheets, our guide to AI visibility tools compares the tracking options.
How long does it take to get cited by Perplexity?
A new page can appear in Perplexity's answers once PerplexityBot has crawled it, since Perplexity searches live for every question. It publishes no timeline. Mentions on other trusted sites take months, because nobody controls an editor's calendar.
SEO.com's guide says "as little as a few weeks to as long as a few months", depending on the SEO a company has done. That fits what I'd expect. A company with a crawlable site and an established name moves first. One whose firewall blocks Perplexity, or whose product facts differ across five directories, has groundwork to do.
Can you pay Perplexity to cite your company?
No. No published option lets a company buy a citation inside Perplexity's answers. Its Publishers Program shares revenue with media partners such as TIME and Fortune when an answer references their content. The same announcement said brands could pay to sponsor related follow-up questions. That's an ad slot beside the answer. It doesn't make you a source.
The source labels say the same thing: payments "do not affect a site's label". The way in matches organic search. Be the clearest answer, and get named by sources Perplexity trusts.
Where does Searchmaxxed fit?
Searchmaxxed is an SEO and AI SEO agency for enterprise, B2B SaaS, venture-backed, manufacturing and public-sector companies. We do technical SEO, content, link building, digital PR, GEO, AEO and LLM SEO. The goal: rank in Google, and get named in Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers for the searches that bring pipeline.
For Perplexity, that's the work in this guide, done for you. We make sure PerplexityBot can reach your site and build the pages that answer your buyers' questions. Then we earn mentions on the sites Perplexity cites. AEO and GEO sit inside every managed package, so there's no add-on to buy. The packages differ in volume and off-site work, and a page release means an approved new page or a substantial rebuild.
| Package | Who it suits | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Growth System | A company growing in one or two markets | 30 page releases a month, work on up to four existing pages, one qualified link action a month, AI visibility tracking |
| Agentic Search Engineering | A competitive, national or multi-market category | 50 page releases a month, comparison, industry and integration pages, digital PR and link campaigns, AI answer tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews |
| Custom & Enterprise | Several brands, several markets or a large site | Dedicated engineering, custom reporting and original first-party research |
Every managed package includes ongoing audits, a 90-day plan in weekly releases, the build work and a monthly decision memo. You own the site, repository, content and data from day one. Want to start smaller? The AI SEO Audit takes five business days and shows where buyers search without finding you.
Here's how we do it. We build on a website you own: our Agentic Website. AI agents pull your Search Console and GA4 data and read the Google results. They also check what Perplexity and the other AI tools say about you, and about your competitors. That feeds the Managed Search Loop, which shows which page, fix or link should bring in the most enquiries next. We build it, check the live page and measure what changed. Off your site, the Off-Page Source Layer builds the links, digital PR and mentions AI answers draw on.
Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than A$10 million in revenue through search for its clients.
Is Searchmaxxed right for you?
We suit marketing and growth teams that want the work built and shipped, with Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google handled by one team. You'll get output you can count.
Growth System fits a company growing in one or two markets. For a crowded or national category, Agentic Search Engineering adds digital PR and link campaigns, and it's the package that tracks Perplexity by name. Custom & Enterprise covers several brands, several markets or a large, complex site.
| Searchmaxxed is a good fit if | Look elsewhere if |
|---|---|
| You want pages built and shipped every month, counted as page releases | You only want to watch your Perplexity mentions; a tracking tool costs less |
| You want Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google work from one team | You need one robots.txt or firewall fix, which your own IT team can make |
| You compete in a crowded category and need digital PR and links | You want reports, not changes to your site |
| You want to own your site, repository, content and data | You need AI search to fill this month's pipeline on its own |
| You want direct access to the people doing the work | You're shopping for the cheapest retainer |
In the right-hand column? Then the checklists in this guide and a tracking tool will take you a long way.
Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity use Google or Bing results?
Perplexity says its answer engine runs on its own index, covering hundreds of billions of webpages, and PerplexityBot fetches pages for it. Pages that rank well in Google often turn up too, because the same qualities that earn a Google ranking earn a Perplexity citation.
Does schema markup help you get cited by Perplexity?
Structured data helps any engine understand who you are and what a page covers. So add Organization, Product and FAQPage schema that matches the visible page. Perplexity hasn't said it uses schema as a ranking signal, and clear answers in the text matter more.
Should I block PerplexityBot to protect my content?
Only if you'll accept vanishing from it. Perplexity says PerplexityBot "is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models", so blocking it removes you from Perplexity without stopping training elsewhere.
Is Perplexity accurate?
Perplexity grounds its answers in the sources it cites, which makes them easy to check. Like any AI tool, it can misread. Click the citation before you rely on a claim, and keep your own company's facts identical everywhere.
Does Reddit help you rank in Perplexity?
LLM Pulse's guide to Perplexity reports that forum threads such as Reddit show up most for opinion and experience questions. A genuine answer from someone at your company can earn one. Promotional posts help nobody.
What is the difference between AEO and Perplexity SEO?
AEO is the wider practice of getting cited by any answer engine, including Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini. Perplexity SEO is AEO for one engine, with more weight on review directories, freshness and letting PerplexityBot in.
Does llms.txt help with Perplexity?
Perplexity's crawler documentation doesn't mention llms.txt, and Perplexity hasn't said its ranking uses one. Its own docs have one. Spend your first hours on crawl access and answer-first pages, which every engine rewards.
