Key takeaways
Brands appear in Perplexity shopping when Perplexity can read their products in full and other sites rate them well.
- Instant Buy replaced Buy with Pro. It's open to all US users, PayPal powers checkout, and the retailer stays the merchant of record.
- The Merchant Program costs nothing, suits large retailers and starts with a five-question form.
- Perplexity favours merchants with full availability, review, price and spec details.
- Shopping and Instant Buy work only for US shoppers today, though Perplexity has said it plans to reach new markets.
Then look at your own product data through Perplexity's eyes, and fill the gaps in availability, reviews, pricing and specs first.
Perplexity shopping is the product search inside Perplexity. Ask a buying question and you get a cited answer with product cards. US shoppers can pay right there with Instant Buy, the checkout that started life as Buy with Pro. No brand can pay for a card. Perplexity says it ranks products on relevance and ratings, and that it favours merchants who give it deeper details: availability, reviews, pricing and specifications. So brands appear in two ways. They get their catalogue into Perplexity's index through the free Merchant Program, PayPal or their platform, and they become the product other sites rate well.
Here at Searchmaxxed, we make your company the answer in Google and the AI engines your buyers ask: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews. For a brand that sells online, that answer is a product card with your name on it. We go after your category's buying questions, fix the product pages the engines read and put your name on the review sites they trust.
Call us if you want Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google to recommend your products by name, so more ready-to-buy shoppers reach you first.
What is Perplexity shopping, and how does it work?
Perplexity shopping turns a buying question into a short, cited answer with product cards. Each card shows an image, a price, the key specs and a summary of what reviewers say. It's free for US users.
There's no separate store to visit. You type a question into normal Perplexity search, and product cards appear when the question is about buying something. Perplexity's help centre gives three examples of searches that bring up cards: "Sofas under $500", "Best skincare products for sensitive skin as a gift" and "Premium silk sheets". That's Perplexity product search.
The experience keeps context. Perplexity's own example is a shopper asking for "the best winter jacket if I live in San Francisco and take a ferry to work". Then they follow up with "What about boots?" and the answer stays on the same commute. It also learns your taste from past searches.
Here's how it got to this point:
| Date | What changed | What it meant for brands |
|---|---|---|
| 18 Nov 2024 | Shop like a Pro: product cards, Snap to Shop, Buy with Pro | Cards for buying questions; checkout for US Pro subscribers only |
| 18 Nov 2024 | Perplexity Merchant Program opens | Large retailers can share product specs for free |
| 25 Nov 2025 | Free shopping for all US users, with Instant Buy through PayPal | Any US user can buy without leaving the chat |
| 4 Aug 2026 | US appeals court lifts the ban on Comet shopping Amazon | Perplexity's shopping agent can buy on Amazon again |
| 26 Oct 2026 | Help centre updated: Instant Buy for all US users | Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max plans excluded |
Sources: Perplexity's 2024 launch post, its 2025 shopping post, PayPal's announcement, Reuters and the Instant Buy help page.
Snap to Shop arrived with the first launch, and it's visual search: snap a photo of an item and Perplexity shows you products that match. Handy when you can't name the thing.
What happened to Buy with Pro?
Buy with Pro became Instant Buy. The one-click checkout that launched for Pro subscribers in November 2024 is now open to all US users, with checkout powered by PayPal.
Plenty of guides still say you need a Pro plan. You don't. Perplexity's Instant Buy help page, updated on 26 October 2026, says the service "is currently available to all users in the United States". The one exception is Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max plans.
For the shopper, it takes three steps. They search, click Instant Buy on a product card and enter their details once. Perplexity then passes the order and payment to the merchant, who fulfils it and handles any questions.
That last part matters to you. Through PayPal, the retailer stays the merchant of record, so the customer, the after-sale contact and any refund stay with you. Perplexity says so in its 2025 shopping post, and its help centre sends shoppers to the retailer for any product, delivery or price question.
Not every product gets the button. Perplexity supports Instant Buy only "with merchants who are compatible with our agentic checkout experience", starting with its most popular categories. Its PayPal help page names Wayfair, Abercrombie & Fitch and "thousands of other merchants on BigCommerce, Shopware, and Wix platforms". PayPal's launch list added Ashley Furniture, Fabletics, Adorama and Newegg.
No button? The card still appears, and the shopper clicks through to your site to buy.
How does Perplexity decide which products to recommend?
Perplexity ranks products the way it ranks sources, on authority and relevance to the exact question, then adjusts for the shopper's own history. Its help centre adds that it's "more likely to recommend merchants who provide deeper product details such as availability, reviews, pricing, and specifications."
No one can pay their way in. The help centre says product listings aren't sponsored and advertisers can't pay to list products, because "advertising should have no influence over organic results". Perplexity has also stepped back from ads. In February 2026 its executives told the Financial Times, as PYMNTS reported, that they had no plans to pursue further advertising.
That leaves four things that decide whose product a shopper sees:
| What decides it | What Perplexity says | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| The shopper's words | The more specific the question, the more precise the match | Pages and specs that match how people ask |
| The shopper's history | Past searches and saved preferences refine results | Nothing directly |
| Your product data | Deeper details on availability, reviews, pricing and specs help | Complete, current data everywhere |
| Authority and ratings | Listings rank on authority, relevance and ratings | Reviews and mentions on trusted sites |
Authority, for Perplexity, leans hard on what other sites say, and we saw it in our own panel of agency-buyer questions across three engines:
Perplexity cited a review directory (Semrush Agencies, Clutch, DesignRush and the like) in 36 of 44 agency answers. ChatGPT did it in 20 and Claude in 15. One agency's Clutch profile had six reviews and was cited 20 times.
That panel covered agencies, not products. It still shows how hard Perplexity leans on third-party review sites, and its help centre names ratings as an input for product listings too. For a brand, the review sites, retailers and "best of" lists in your category are part of your shelf.
What is the Perplexity Merchant Program, and is it worth joining?
The Perplexity Merchant Program is a free way for large retailers to share product specs with Perplexity, so it holds live details on their catalogue. It doesn't buy placement. It gives Perplexity the fuller data that its help centre says it rewards.
When Perplexity launched the program in November 2024, it listed four benefits:
- A better chance of being a "recommended product", because your products sit in its index with fuller details.
- Payment integrations for its one-click checkout, then called Buy with Pro.
- Free API access, so you can build Perplexity-powered search on your own site, limited to your own products.
- A custom dashboard showing the search and shopping trends that surface your products.
Perplexity keeps the program apart from advertising. It called the program "distinct from and unrelated to" its sponsored questions ad products.
Joining starts with a five-question signup form asking for basics such as your merchant name and website, and Perplexity follows up. Perplexity wrote the program for "large retailers". If that's you and you sell to US shoppers, apply, because it's free and fuller product data is exactly what Perplexity says it favours.
The benefit list dates from the Buy with Pro era. So when Perplexity replies, confirm what the program includes today: the data format, how often it refreshes, and whether it connects you to Instant Buy.
How do you get your products into Perplexity shopping?
There are five routes in, and most large brands use two or more. Each one opens a different door, and the right mix depends on how you already sell.
| Route | Best for | What it can open up | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchant Program form | Large retailers | Product data in Perplexity's index | Current terms, in Perplexity's reply |
| PayPal store sync and agent ready | Merchants already on PayPal | Discovery plus Instant Buy checkout | Your PayPal settings and catalogue sync |
| BigCommerce, Shopware or Wix | Stores on those platforms | Instant Buy, where your platform supports it | Your platform's AI or PayPal settings |
| Shopify | Shopify stores selling to the US | Product data through Shopify's integration | Sales channels, then Agentic, in your admin |
| Your own product pages | Every brand | Citations and product facts from the open web | PerplexityBot access and Product schema |
Sources: Perplexity, PayPal, Perplexity's PayPal help page and Shopify's agentic storefronts help.
PayPal describes its two tools plainly. Store sync makes your catalogue discoverable in Perplexity's results, and agent ready lets you take payment there with your existing PayPal setup.
Shopify needs a closer look. Perplexity's 2024 launch credited a Shopify integration, and Shopify's December 2025 launch of agentic storefronts named Perplexity too. Yet Shopify's current help page for agentic storefronts lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Perplexity isn't on it. So open Sales channels, then Agentic, in your Shopify admin and see what's switched on, rather than counting on it.
The feed itself is its own job. Perplexity publishes no public field-by-field upload spec, so map your fields once you hear back from it. Our guide to AI shopping product feeds covers the fields ChatGPT and Google ask for, and the questions to put to Perplexity.
What can brands do to show up in Perplexity's product cards?
Give Perplexity complete product facts it can reach and trust, and keep them identical everywhere. Then earn the reviews and mentions that make your product the easy pick. Six moves cover it:
- Let Perplexity in. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN. Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in its results, and it asks you to permit its published IP ranges. A second fetcher, Perplexity-User, visits pages live when someone's question needs them.
- Fill in the four details Perplexity names. Availability, reviews, pricing and specifications belong on the product page, in your feed and in Product schema that matches what the page shows.
- Write product pages that answer the buying question. Say who the product suits, what it works with, what's in the box and how it compares. Perplexity's cards summarise specs and reviews, so give it real ones.
- Keep one version of the truth. Price, stock and variant need to match across your feed, your page and your checkout. A card that shows the wrong price costs you the sale and the shopper's trust.
- Earn reviews where Perplexity reads them. Ask happy buyers to review you on your own pages and on the retailer and review sites that show up in your category's answers.
- Publish the pages people ask for. "Best X for Y" guides, comparisons and buying guides on your site give Perplexity a page to cite beside the card.
A worked example. Say you sell hardware security keys to IT teams. A buyer asks Perplexity for "the best security key for a 200-person company on Google Workspace and Okta". Perplexity has to match products to every part of that question. Your rival's page lists FIDO2 support, USB-C and NFC models, a per-key price, bulk stock and setup guides for Google Workspace and Okta by name. Your page says "works with all major platforms". Perplexity can match the rival's key to every part of the question. Yours matches two words: security key.
| Shopper's words | Fact Perplexity needs | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| "200-person company" | Bulk pricing and stock for 200+ keys | Product page, feed, Offer schema |
| "Google Workspace and Okta" | Named compatibility for each platform | Spec table, setup guides, FAQ |
| "best" | Ratings and third-party reviews | Your reviews, retailer and review sites |
| (unstated) | Connector and standard: USB-C, NFC, FIDO2 | Spec table, feed attributes |
Fix those four rows and your key becomes a product Perplexity can recommend for that buyer. The same facts help a human reading your page, too.
Does Perplexity shopping work outside the US?
Not for checkout. Instant Buy serves US users, and Perplexity's 2025 launch offered free shopping to US users. Perplexity said in 2024 it would expand to new markets after the US launch, so check the help centre before you plan for other countries.
Selling into the US from elsewhere? You can still appear. Perplexity's 2024 launch said its Shopify integration covered Shopify businesses globally that sell to the US.
For buyers outside the US, Perplexity still answers buying questions with cited pages, so the work of getting cited carries over to every market. Our guide to getting cited by Perplexity covers crawler access, answer-first pages and the review directories its answers lean on.
How do you measure whether Perplexity shopping is working?
Measure three things on their own: whether your products appear for your buying questions, whether shoppers arrive, and whether they buy.
Start with appearance. Keep a fixed list of 20 to 50 buying questions and run each one in Perplexity every month, from a US connection. Record whose cards appear, in what order, which merchant the card links to and the price it shows.
Then look at visits. GA4 added an AI Assistant channel in May 2026 for visits from chatbots, and its source grouping names Perplexity. Read that channel with care, because bots can flood it:
A client's GA4 showed AI-assistant visits jump from 354 to 6,050 in a month. Almost none of it was real. About 5,700 came in three one-hour bursts: same 1920x1080 desktop Chrome, all new users, no referrer, about 20 seconds each, landing on two pages. Real AI traffic was 385 sessions against 354 the month before, roughly flat.
So check any spike before you celebrate it.
Last, count orders. Instant Buy orders reach you as the merchant, so tag them by source. The Merchant Program's dashboard, if Perplexity still offers it, adds the search and shopping trends that surface your products. We track which searches and AI answers turn into revenue for clients, through their CRM as well as GA4.
Is Perplexity shopping worth the effort for a large brand?
Yes, if you sell to US shoppers. AI-referred shoppers now buy more often than other visitors, and Perplexity's product cards can't be bought, so a strong catalogue wins on merit.
Adobe's August 2026 AI traffic report puts numbers on it. In July 2026, AI-referred US retail visitors converted at a 60% higher rate than non-AI traffic, and brought 53% more revenue per visit. In Adobe's July survey, 42% of consumers said they had used AI assistants for online shopping.
Perplexity's reach is real, too. It answers more than 150 million questions a week, by its own count in PayPal's November 2025 announcement.
The work also travels. The product facts, reviews and pages that win a Perplexity card feed ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode as well, a point Shopify's own guide makes. Our umbrella guide to showing up in AI search covers how the engines differ.
Shopping agents raise the stakes again. Perplexity's Comet browser can shop on retail sites for its users, and in August 2026 a US appeals court let it keep shopping on Amazon. So your product pages now serve AI shoppers as well as people. Our agentic commerce explainer covers the rest.
Is Searchmaxxed right for you?
We're a strong fit if you're an enterprise brand, retailer or manufacturer selling to US buyers, and rivals keep winning AI answers for your products. You want Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google to recommend you by name, and you want to see that turn into revenue.
Here's what you get. We go after the buying questions in your category. Then we fix what stops the engines reading your products: crawl and indexing faults, slow pages and schema markup that doesn't match the page. We build the answer-first product, comparison and buying-guide pages those questions need, so the engines have something specific to quote. We put your name on the review sites and lists the AI answers cite. We track what the AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google say about you. You talk to the people doing the work, with no account manager, and you own your site, content and data from day one. The full scope, from technical SEO to digital PR, is on our AI search optimisation service page.
One client came to us with a website that wasn't working. Three months later he was on page one for one of the most competitive searches in his industry. Now he has more high-intent leads than he can handle, and we're building the systems to handle them.
The bigger picture:
Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than $15 million in revenue through search for its clients.
"I can't believe this worked." That's what we hear. Clients tell us they finally found a growth partner in search that keeps its word and gets things done.
We're the wrong call in three cases:
- You need sales this month to survive. Search takes longer than that.
- You want someone to file your Merchant Program application or wire up PayPal. Your commerce team or platform owns those, and we work alongside them.
- You only need scheduled catalogue exports. If your product pages are sound, your feed provider may cover the work.
Sell software rather than boxes? There's no product card for a subscription, so Perplexity shopping isn't your channel. Your goal is citations in Perplexity's answers, which we go after too.
What should you do this week?
Run your 20 most valuable buying questions in Perplexity as a US shopper, and note whose products appear and what their cards show. Then check that robots.txt and your firewall let PerplexityBot through. Fill in availability, reviews, pricing and specs on your top 20 products. If you're a large retailer, send the Merchant Program form; if you're on PayPal or a platform, check its AI channel settings.
Want us to do it with you? Get your free search analysis. We'll benchmark you against your top competitors across Google, ChatGPT and the other AI engines. We'll show you where they're named instead of you, and the few moves that will matter most.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Perplexity Merchant Program free?
Yes. Perplexity says the program "is free for merchants", and it keeps the program separate from its advertising. Perplexity built it for large retailers, who apply through a five-question form.
Can brands pay to appear in Perplexity shopping?
No. Perplexity's help centre says product listings aren't sponsored and that its algorithm picks them on relevance and ratings. In February 2026 Perplexity executives also said they had no plans to pursue further advertising, according to the Financial Times.
Do you need Perplexity Pro to use Instant Buy?
No. Instant Buy replaced Buy with Pro, which needed a Pro plan. Perplexity's help centre now says Instant Buy is available to all users in the United States, except those on Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max plans.
Who is the merchant of record when someone uses Instant Buy?
The retailer. Perplexity and PayPal both say the retailer stays the merchant of record. You see the customer, process returns and own the relationship after the sale, as you would on your own site.
Can I send my Google Shopping feed to Perplexity?
Ask Perplexity first. It publishes no public field-by-field spec for merchant uploads, so your Google feed may need changes before it fits. Keep availability, reviews, pricing and specs intact.
How is the Perplexity Merchant Program different from Google Merchant Center?
Google Merchant Center is a self-serve tool where eligible businesses upload product feeds for Google's shopping results. Perplexity's program starts with a signup form for large retailers and publishes no feed spec, so plan for both if you sell to the US.
How does Perplexity make money from shopping?
Not from ads on product cards. When it launched free shopping in November 2025, Perplexity declined to tell CNBC whether it would earn revenue from purchases. In 2024 it told The Verge that Buy with Pro earned it nothing "as of now".
