TLDR

The best Ahrefs alternatives depend on the job: Semrush for breadth, SE Ranking for tracking capacity, Mangools for light research and Majestic for links.[1][4][2][3]

Compare billing terms and limits before switching. If you want someone to build and check changes, our Managed Search Loop covers that work.

My Ahrefs alternatives picks are Semrush for broad SEO, Mangools for light keyword work and Majestic for backlink research.[1][2][3] SE Ranking suits daily tracking across several sites; Moz Pro suits teams wanting site research with weekly AI checks.[4][5] Keep Ahrefs when Content Explorer and its research workflow earn their place.[6]

I run Searchmaxxed, and I chose these five tools from their published plans. These are my recommendations, not a hands-on performance ranking.

Which Ahrefs alternatives suit each job?

Semrush, SE Ranking, Mangools, Moz Pro and Majestic cover different workloads; Ahrefs remains the baseline for deciding what you need to replace.[6][1][4][2][5][3]

Pricing sources: official vendor pages, 6 October 2026. GST not stated; Majestic explicitly excludes VAT.[6][1][4][2][5][3] Dollar symbols without a named currency stay as published; check the checkout currency before comparing Australian costs.

Named AI coverage varies by plan. Check the chosen tier before treating a platform name as an included feature.

SEO tasks split into broad research, daily tracking, keyword work and backlink audits
Choose the job first, then the tool. This diagram shows the decision, not a performance ranking.

Semrush is my pick when you want keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits and position tracking in one subscription.[1] Its SEO tier covers core search work; Starter adds a defined daily AI prompt allowance.[1]

  • What it does: SEO includes five monitored websites and 500 keywords with daily tracking.[1] It also offers AI visibility reports and custom prompt monitoring.[1]
  • Engines tracked: Starter's published coverage names Google Search, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, followed by “& more”.[1]
  • Starting price: SEO shows $139.95/month, or $117.33/month billed annually.[7] Starter shows $199/month, or $165.17/month billed annually; the dollar currency is unspecified.[1]
  • Free trial: Semrush's pricing page offers a free trial; its duration isn't stated.[1] Check the chosen toolkit's checkout terms before starting.
  • What it cannot do: SEO's base allowance stops at 500 tracked keywords.[1] Starter also caps daily prompt tracking at 50 prompts.[1]
  • Best for: I'd shortlist Semrush for a team replacing several Ahrefs jobs together. Pick the tier against the actual tracking list.

2. SE Ranking: daily tracking across several sites

SE Ranking Core is my pick when daily keyword tracking and several projects matter more than changing the subscription's headline number. Core includes ten projects and 2,000 keywords to track daily.[4]

  • What it does: Core combines keyword, competitor and backlink research with website and on-page audits.[4] It includes one manager seat and 100 daily prompts.[4]
  • Engines tracked: The AI Search add-on names AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT.[4] Confirm which platforms your Core subscription covers before paying.
  • Starting price: Core shows $129/month, or $103.20/month on annual billing; the dollar currency is unspecified.[4]
  • Free trial: The 14-day trial needs no credit card.[4] Its starter limits include 750 daily tracked keywords and 20 daily AI prompts.[4]
  • What it cannot do: Core's base allowance includes one manager seat.[4] White-label reporting sits in the separate Agency Pack.[4]
  • Best for: I'd test SE Ranking when you track several sites each day. Include extra seats and agency reporting in the cost check.

The displayed Core monthly price matches Ahrefs Lite's $129 figure. The workload allowances differ, so calling it cheaper without naming the comparison would mislead.[6][4]

3. Mangools: lighter keyword and ranking work

Mangools is my pick for a small research workload with keyword discovery, search-result checks and rank tracking. Basic's pricing page defines daily research limits and weekly ranking updates.[2]

  • What it does: Basic includes 100 keyword research requests per day and 100 search-result analysis requests per day.[2] Its backlink allowance is 100,000 per month.[2]
  • Engines tracked: The bundled AI Search Watcher PRO names OpenAI, Google AI Overviews and Claude.[2] Other platform names aren't confirmed.
  • Starting price: Basic shows $452.40 for annual billing.[2] Confirm the currency and monthly price at checkout.
  • Free trial: Trial terms aren't confirmed. Mangools publishes a 48-hour refund window, excluding two consecutive subscriptions.[2]
  • What it cannot do: Basic won't give you daily ranking updates or extra seats.[2] It tracks 200 keywords with weekly updates; Agency specifies daily updates.[2]
  • Best for: I'd consider Basic for a solo operator whose weekly ranking check is enough. Test your keyword research workload against its daily limits.

4. Moz Pro: site research with weekly AI checks

Moz Pro Standard is my pick when a modest site portfolio needs keyword, link and crawl research alongside weekly AI checks.[5] Standard publishes those AI features; confirm Starter's scope before choosing its lower price.

  • What it does: Standard includes one user, three tracked sites and 300 tracked keywords.[5] It also publishes 400,000 pages crawled per month.[5]
  • Engines tracked: Standard names GPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity.[5] Its 150 tracked prompts update weekly.[5]
  • Starting price: Starter shows $49/month for one website.[5] Standard shows USD $99/month, or USD $79/month when paying yearly; Starter lacks a separate currency label.[5]
  • Free trial: Moz links to a free trial from Medium; the trial length isn't confirmed.[5]
  • What it cannot do: Standard's base allowance stops at three tracked sites.[5] Its weekly AI checks won't provide daily monitoring.[5]
  • Best for: I'd shortlist Standard for a team that wants those research jobs together. Check Starter's inclusions if your budget only covers one site.

Moz also offers limited free access to Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer through a Moz Community account.[5] Exact free query limits aren't confirmed.

Majestic is my pick when backlinks are the main job. Lite covers its Fresh Index; Pro adds the Historic Index and more reports.[3] Choose the tier against the link history you need.

  • What it does: Lite includes Site Explorer, Link Context, Link Graph, Trust Flow and referring-domain research.[3] Pro adds raw exports and backlink history.[3]
  • Engines tracked: AI-answer monitoring isn't confirmed. Treat Majestic's published link-research features as the basis for the decision.
  • Starting price: Lite costs USD $49.99/month, or USD $41.67/month equivalent with $499.99 paid every twelve months.[3] All prices exclude VAT.[3]
  • Free trial: Majestic offers new customers a seven-day money-back window on their first Lite or Pro subscription.[3] That requires a purchase.
  • What it cannot do: Lite doesn't include the Historic Index or full API access.[3] Pro adds historical research; the API plan supplies full API access.[3]
  • Best for: I'd shortlist Majestic for backlink audits and prospecting. Budget for Pro if the old link record is part of the job.

When is Ahrefs still the right choice?

Keep Ahrefs when Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer and Content Explorer support recurring research you would otherwise split across subscriptions. Content Explorer and Batch Analysis appear from Standard upwards.[6]

Ahrefs Lite includes 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits and six months of historical data.[6] It includes one user with 1,000 monthly credits.[6] Standard raises the allowances to 2,000 tracked keywords and two years of history, with unlimited credits per user.[6]

Unlimited credits still sit alongside other limits. Standard publishes 500,000 crawl credits and one included user.[6] Check the limits attached to the report you run most often.

I would keep Standard if Content Explorer drives your research and the other features support your weekly work. That recommendation rests on the published feature bundle, not a claim that Ahrefs has the most accurate database.

For a smaller job, Ahrefs also offers Starter at $29/month.[6] Ahrefs Free gives website owners limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access.[6] Switching vendors deserves a comparison with those options too.

Which options are cheaper than Ahrefs?

Choose the Ahrefs tier first: Starter shows $29/month, Lite $129/month and Standard $249/month.[6] Comparing every alternative only with Standard can make a bigger saving appear than your actual switch would produce.

PlanPublished chargeBilling condition
Ahrefs Starter$29/monthMonthly; currency unspecified
Ahrefs Lite$129/monthMonthly; currency unspecified
Semrush SEO$139.95/monthMonthly; currency unspecified
SE Ranking Core$129/monthMonthly; currency unspecified
Mangools Basic$452.40/yearAnnual; currency unspecified
Moz Starter$49/monthSingle website; currency label absent
Moz StandardUSD $99/monthMonthly
Majestic LiteUSD $49.99/monthMonthly; excludes VAT

Semrush SEO's displayed monthly number exceeds Ahrefs Lite's; SE Ranking Core's matches it.[6][1][4] Neither offers a lower displayed monthly number against Ahrefs Starter.[6][1][4] Confirm currencies and required features before treating any of these as cash savings.

Annual rates also carry a different commitment. SE Ranking says annual plans charge upfront.[4] Moz publishes a USD $950 first-year Standard bill beside its USD $79/month label.[5] Use the vendor's full bill, not a rounded monthly label, for the cash decision.

Moz Standard and Majestic Lite monthly USD prices, with different research scopes labelled
Moz Standard: USD $99/month. Majestic Lite: USD $49.99/month, excluding VAT. Different scopes; official pages captured 6 October 2026.

What is a free Ahrefs alternative?

Semrush's free account and Moz's free research access can replace parts of Ahrefs; Ahrefs Free may already cover your own-site checks.[6][1][5] Choose by the task you need to finish.

Semrush publishes a free account with one demo project and ten reports per day across its main tools.[1] Moz's free Community account gives limited Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer access.[5] Ahrefs Free gives website owners limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit.[6]

I would start with Ahrefs Free for an owned-site audit. For occasional keyword ideas, I'd try Moz's limited free research before buying a full suite.[6][5]

A free account, a trial and a refund window have different purchase terms. SE Ranking's trial needs no card; Majestic's refund window follows a paid first subscription.[4][3] Pick the option that gives you enough access to test the work.

How to choose an Ahrefs alternative

Choose an Ahrefs alternative by testing your recurring jobs against the plan you would buy. I would follow five checks with your own site and a competitor you know.

  1. Name the job. Separate keyword research from backlink work, crawling and AI-answer checks.
  2. Set the workload. Write down sites, active users, tracked keywords and prompts before reading the feature list.
  3. Match the cadence. SE Ranking Core specifies daily keyword tracking; Mangools Basic specifies weekly updates.[4][2]
  4. Test the output. Run a keyword search, inspect a link report and check an export you would give to a colleague.
  5. Check the whole bill. Confirm currency, billing term, add-ons and who will act on the findings.

If your job is a technical SEO audit, test the crawl findings against faults you already know. For content strategy, test whether the research helps you choose and write a specific page. For link building, inspect the referring pages you would approach.

Where does Searchmaxxed fit?

Searchmaxxed fits when you want a team to research, build and check changes. We do agentic SEO: AI agents gather the evidence, and our Managed Search Loop helps us pick the next job.

We connect your whole Search Console and GA4. Our agents check competitor sites, Google results and AI answers every week. We compare that evidence with your plan through the Managed Search Loop.

We build new pages and make fixes on your Agentic Website. You own the site, its GitHub repository, content and data. The site runs on Vercel. We also add schema, which labels page facts, and links between related pages.

Our Off-Page Source Layer covers links, reviews, citations, press and mentions on other sites. We include AEO and GEO, the work aimed at answers and recommendations from search and AI systems.

For example, suppose your service has no page that answers a search you want to win. We'd research and build that page. A person approves it before release. We then check the live page and measure what changed before choosing the next job.

I did the research, pages and updates manually at Radiant Roof Repairs. I built it from zero to more than $1 million a year in revenue. SEO was the only marketing channel.

Our packages set the work we take on:

  • Local Search includes at least eight page releases a month, daily Google Business Profile management, reviews, local links and citation cleanup. It fits local SEO.
  • Growth System includes 30 page releases a month, technical work, schema, internal links, source-layer basics and AI visibility tracking.
  • Agentic Search Engineering includes 50 page releases a month, comparison and industry pages, continuous digital PR, qualified link campaigns and AI-answer tracking.
  • Custom & Enterprise can cover several markets, dedicated engineering, custom reporting and original first-party research.

Entry options include the Agentic Website Full Build, Agentic Migration and AI SEO Audit. We recommend the scope after looking at your site and market.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 5 best SEO tools?

My five Ahrefs alternatives are Semrush, SE Ranking, Mangools, Moz Pro and Majestic. I would choose by the job: broad research, daily tracking, lighter keyword work, weekly AI checks or backlink audits.[1][4][2][5][3]

Is Semrush or Ahrefs better?

I'd pick Semrush for its broad SEO and AI-search plan options. I'd keep Ahrefs Standard when Content Explorer and Batch Analysis matter to the research workflow.[6][1] Neither recommendation establishes a data-accuracy winner.

What is the best free SEO tool?

For an owned-site audit, I'd start with Ahrefs Free. It gives website owners limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access.[6] For free keyword or link research, Moz Community offers limited Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer access.[5]

Is Ahrefs worth the money?

Ahrefs is worth keeping if its reports support work you do each week. Standard includes Content Explorer, Batch Analysis and two years of historical data.[6] If you only need owned-site checks, I'd test Ahrefs Free first.[6]

Does Ahrefs offer a free trial?

Ahrefs offers website owners a free account with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access.[6] A time-limited trial of the complete paid suite isn't confirmed.

Is Ahrefs cheaper than Semrush?

Ahrefs Lite shows $129/month and Semrush SEO shows $139.95/month.[6][7] Ahrefs Standard shows $249/month, above Semrush SEO's displayed number.[6][1] Confirm the checkout currencies and totals before comparing costs.

What is the difference between Moz, Ahrefs and Semrush?

I'd compare Moz Standard for site research and weekly AI checks, Ahrefs Standard for Content Explorer, and Semrush Starter for daily AI prompt tracking.[6][1][5] Match the plan, not the brand name alone.

Is Ahrefs good for keyword research?

Ahrefs includes Keywords Explorer in Lite.[6] Standard adds keyword clusters, search intents and other keyword features.[6] I'd choose the tier according to the research you need. No accuracy benchmark establishes a winner against its rivals.

Is Ahrefs keyword research free?

Full Keywords Explorer access isn't confirmed in Ahrefs Free. Ahrefs promises website owners limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access.[6] For free keyword research, Moz Community includes limited Keyword Explorer access.[5]

What is the primary purpose of Ahrefs or Semrush?

Ahrefs and Semrush help you research search opportunities, inspect competitors, audit sites and track performance.[6][1] Their paid plans combine several of those jobs.[6][1] Choose the reports you will act on before choosing the subscription.

Is Ahrefs API access free?

Ahrefs lists API and MCP access in paid Lite.[6] MCP connects tool data with AI assistants.[1] Check the allowance for the data your workflow needs.

Which Ahrefs alternative is best for agencies?

I'd test SE Ranking when project capacity and shared work drive the choice. Growth includes 30 projects and three manager seats.[4] The separate Agency Pack adds white-label reporting and client-facing tools.[4] Include those extras when comparing the subscription.

Can Searchmaxxed work from our Search Console and GA4?

Yes. Searchmaxxed connects your whole Search Console and GA4 with competitor checks, Google results and AI-answer observations. Our Managed Search Loop uses that evidence to choose the next job. You can read the method behind AI SEO.
