Semrush vs Ahrefs comes down to your Australian business's main job: Semrush for daily rank tracking, Ahrefs Standard for link research.[1][2] Use both when separate research jobs justify the cost. I run Searchmaxxed, so these are my recommendations from the vendors' published offers, not an independent software test.

Semrush vs Ahrefs: which should you choose?

Semrush Starter suits a team that wants daily keyword tracking and 50 bundled daily AI prompts.[1] Ahrefs Standard includes ten prompts and suits regular link and content research.[2] I'd pick the workflow first, then the plan that covers it.

Official pricing pages, 6 October 2026. Vendor dollar amounts; currency and billing notes follow.

Semrush's SEO plan includes keyword research, competitor analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit.[1] Its Starter plan adds a stated AI allowance alongside SEO.[1] Pro+ adds historical SEO data, content optimisation and keyword cannibalisation analysis, which helps spot pages competing for the same search.[1]

Ahrefs Lite includes Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker.[2] Standard adds Content Explorer, Batch Analysis, SERP comparison and broken-backlink reports.[2] Those are concrete reasons to consider Standard when link research will form part of your weekly work.

Neither recommendation means the other tool fails at SEO. Both publish research, audit and tracking features.[1][2] Choose the set of reports you can turn into a page, a fix or a link opportunity.

How much do Semrush and Ahrefs cost in 2026?

Semrush's SEO plan costs $139.95 monthly; Ahrefs Lite costs $129 monthly, while Ahrefs also offers a $29 Starter plan.[5][2][7] Compare the named tiers and their limits before treating either starting price as the cost of your whole workflow.

The official pricing pages don't say whether prices are USD or AUD, and neither states GST treatment.[1][2] Ecommercetrix labels the matching Ahrefs core plans and Semrush Starter, Pro+ and Advanced prices as USD.[8][9] Confirm the checkout currency, GST and final AUD payment before subscribing.

Semrush's annual figures are monthly equivalents of annual billing.[1] Starter's $165.17 annual-billing equivalent differs from its $199 monthly subscription.[1] Ask Ahrefs for its annual checkout total before comparing annual commitments.

Ahrefs' $29 Starter offer has its own place on the pricing page.[7] Its current card doesn't give enough detail to treat it as a replacement for Lite or Standard.[7] Enterprise costs $1,499 per month with an annual commitment.[10] Semrush Enterprise uses custom pricing.[11]

Extra users and reporting can change your budget. Semrush publishes additional users from $45 per month, Base Report at $10 and Pro Report at $20.[3] Ahrefs lists extra users at $40 for Lite, $60 for Standard and $80 for Advanced, each per month.[2]

Keep a tool subscription separate from SEO delivery costs in Australia. Budget for the work you expect someone to complete after reading the reports.

Which is better for keyword research and content planning?

I'd choose Semrush Pro+ for content optimisation and Ahrefs Standard for keyword research alongside content and competitor research.[1][2] I wouldn't choose either on an untested claim that it has more accurate Australian data.

Semrush's Pro+ plan combines historical SEO data with content optimisation and cannibalisation analysis.[1] SE Ranking's comparison also describes Keyword Magic Tool, Keyword Gap and Keyword Strategy Builder.[12] Those features cover keyword ideas, competitor gaps and organising topics.[12]

Ahrefs Standard adds keyword clusters, search intents, AI suggestions and translations to Keywords Explorer.[2] It also adds SERP comparison, which compares search results, and Content Explorer for researching content and link prospects.[2][13]

For an Australian business, I'd test the same service or product searches in each tool. Set Australia as the market where the tool permits it. Then inspect the actual results and the pages competing for those searches.

Suppose you sell roof repairs. A search for an urgent repair and a search for a replacement roof may deserve different pages. Check the results before splitting them. Treat a suggested keyword cluster as a starting point for that decision.

Ahrefs' Traffic Potential metric estimates traffic across a page's keyword set, according to OneLittleWeb's comparison.[14] That can inform research, but I'd still check which searches fit the offer and which page would answer them.

A content strategy should end with a clear page job: who it helps, what it answers and how someone enquires. Pick the tool that helps your team reach that decision without repeating the research elsewhere.

Which has more accurate Australian SEO data?

Neither Semrush nor Ahrefs earns an Australian accuracy verdict from a pricing or feature page alone. I'd test both against your market before choosing a data source. The published offers establish features and limits, without a matched Australian accuracy test.[1][2]

Compare the same searches, domains and dates. For keyword research, inspect whether each tool finds terms relevant to your offer. For link research, try links you know exist and open the referring pages yourself. For rankings, match the location and device settings before comparing positions.

SE Ranking's comparison describes competitor traffic reports from both tools as estimates.[15] Keep those estimates separate from your own Search Console and GA4 records. A gap can prompt more research; it shouldn't become a claim about a competitor's sales.

I'd buy the tool that answers your recurring questions with reports your team can inspect. Test keyword coverage, link discovery and rank tracking as separate jobs.

I'd choose Ahrefs Standard for backlink research that needs broken-backlink reports and content discovery. Semrush also offers backlink research and an outreach workflow.[2][13][16] The choice depends on whether you need to find prospects or manage contact with them.

Ahrefs Standard includes broken backlinks, broken links, outgoing links and linking authors within Site Explorer.[2] Its official comparison describes Content Explorer as a way to find content and link prospects.[13] Ahrefs also says it updates referring domains and backlinks daily.[13]

Semrush's Link Building Tool combines prospect discovery, outreach emails and campaign tracking, according to SE Ranking's comparison.[16] That can suit someone who wants research and outreach in one workflow. Check the subscription scope before assuming every marketing feature belongs to the base SEO price.

I wouldn't choose a tool by the largest headline backlink count. Ask whether it finds the relevant sites around your market and whether you can inspect the links themselves.

For a local business, try your direct competitors and an industry publication you already know. Can you identify a credible article, directory or supplier relationship? Can you inspect why the link exists? Those questions make a better purchase test than a database-size contest.

Link building needs a plan for the page and the relationship behind each placement. Research software helps identify the next prospect; assign the contact and verification work to someone before paying for another report.

Which offers better rank tracking and site audits?

Semrush includes daily keyword tracking, while Ahrefs' current Rank Tracker table specifies weekly updates. Both include Site Audit.[1][2][6] Choose Semrush when daily ranking changes matter to your workflow; check crawl capacity separately when comparing audits.

Entry plans compared by tracked keyword allowance, with daily or weekly update labels
Ahrefs offers more tracked keywords in these plans; Semrush updates daily. Sources: official pricing pages, 6 October 2026.

Ahrefs Lite also caps pages per audit project at 25,000; Standard caps them at 50,000.[6] Unlimited verified projects therefore don't mean unlimited crawling or keyword tracking.[6] For a large store, count the pages you want the audit to reach before picking a tier.

Semrush Starter includes an AI-ready Site Audit.[1] Its AI feature page describes checks for AI-bot access and technical faults.[17] Ahrefs includes Always-on audit among its features and sells Project Boost upgrades for additional audit capabilities.[2][18]

Ask Ahrefs whether your chosen plan offers daily ranking updates and what that would cost.[18] A daily site audit and a daily ranking update serve different jobs.

Assign an owner to each fault you decide to fix. A technical SEO job should include the live change and a check that the problem has gone. Compare tools on the issues your team can inspect and resolve.

Can Semrush and Ahrefs track AI answers?

Yes, Semrush and Ahrefs both publish AI-answer tracking features. Semrush Starter includes more named daily prompts than Ahrefs Lite or Standard.[1][2] Ahrefs separates custom-prompt checks from its wider Brand Radar database research.[7][19] Compare those jobs before choosing an AI plan.

Ahrefs Standard10300 checks/monthCustom prompts
Ahrefs Advanced20600 checks/monthCustom prompts

Sources: official pricing pages, 6 October 2026. Prompt counts do not establish identical platform or location coverage.

Ahrefs defines a check as one prompt on one platform in one location.[7] Its prompt-tracking page also ties usage to update frequency.[20] Before choosing a quota, specify the questions, platforms, location and schedule you want to monitor.

Ahrefs' extra custom-prompt packages cost $50, $100 or $250 per month, adding 2,500, 7,000 or 25,000 monthly checks respectively.[7] Each package also publishes a per-check overage charge.[7] Broader Brand Radar AI research starts at $199 per month as a separate purchase.[7]

Ahrefs says its index prompts derive from real searches in its keyword database.[19] Its custom-prompt product lets you follow questions you choose, including niche queries.[19] The index and your custom questions can serve different purposes; neither automatically proves what your customers asked ChatGPT.

Semrush offers prompt research, brand portrayal checks and competitor AI analysis on its feature page.[17] Its pricing page names Google Search, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, plus other coverage.[1] Ahrefs' Brand Radar page names AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot for its index.[19] Custom Prompts adds Claude.[19]

Semrush's SEO card names AI features without a prompt quota.[1] Confirm the quota for your chosen plan. Ask how each engine and location counts towards usage before comparing tracking allowances.

Use AEO for work aimed at answering customer questions and GEO for work aimed at AI recommendations and citations. Our AI SEO explanation shows how we connect that work with website changes. The measurement plan should tell you what you will change when a competitor appears and you don't.

Which is better for reporting, APIs and automation?

Ahrefs Lite includes API and MCP access with limits. Semrush Starter names MCP access, while Advanced names API data integration.[2][6][1] Choose the tier that supports your required data transfer, then check reporting costs and extra logins.

If you want software or an AI assistant to request reports, compare API and MCP access in the plan. Ahrefs caps API and MCP rows per request at 100 on Lite, 250 on Standard and 500 on Advanced.[6] Check the fields and volume your workflow needs before buying a plan for an integration.

Ahrefs Lite includes 1,000 credits per user. Standard and Advanced publish unlimited credits per user.[2] Both higher plans still have finite export, crawl and integration allowances.[6] A promise of unlimited credits covers that field, not every kind of usage.

Semrush's Base Report add-on includes Google Analytics and Search Console integrations, scheduling and PDF export.[3] Pro Report adds external integrations, branding, specific delivery times and AI summaries.[3] Ahrefs includes Report Builder in its plans and separately sells a $99 monthly package with 50 reports, 500 widgets and scheduling.[2][21]

Write down the report you want before comparing reporting products. For example, ask for landing-page changes beside enquiries and the next action. Then check whether the plan can gather those fields and share them with the people doing the work.

Which is the best SEO tool for your Australian business?

The best SEO tool is the one your team can turn into work: I'd choose Semrush for daily tracking or Ahrefs Standard for research.[1][2][6] At Searchmaxxed, we connect research with page changes, human approval and follow-up measurement.

For a local service business, I'd start with the website and Google Business Profile jobs you need to complete. Semrush offers a separate local toolkit with listing, review and map-tracking features, according to SE Ranking's comparison.[22] Ask Semrush for its current local-tool price.

Ahrefs' current included-feature list names GBP Monitor Beta.[2] Treat the beta label as part of the offer. Check what it does before assuming it replaces listing management, review work or a map-grid workflow. Our local SEO service explains the work we handle across those areas.

For multiple stores, Ahrefs' unlimited verified projects can make it worth considering.[6] Check the shared crawl and tracking allowances against the sites you want to monitor. For a team reviewing ranks daily, Semrush's daily updates provide a different reason to choose it.[1]

For an agency, list the research tasks, reporting needs and extra users before choosing a subscription. For an owner doing occasional checks, start with the free options. Spend on a paid plan when you can name the report and the action it will support.

If you've decided to hire someone, compare SEO agencies in Australia on the work they will complete. A preference for Semrush or Ahrefs tells you less than a clear page plan and someone who can ship it.

Should you start with a free plan or a trial?

Start by testing a real workflow: Semrush offers a free account and a trial, while Ahrefs offers limited free access to your own site.[3][4][23] Use that access to decide which paid features your next job requires.

Semrush's free account includes one demo project and ten daily reports across its main tools.[3] Its AI visibility feature page advertises seven-day free access.[23] Check the trial offer and payment terms at signup before entering your card.

Ahrefs Free provides limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access for website owners.[4] Its pricing FAQ doesn't promise a free trial of the paid suite.[4] A free account and a paid-plan trial give you different access.

I'd run this test:

  1. Research a service or product you want customers to find.
  2. Inspect a direct competitor's page and its links.
  3. Audit your site and choose a fault you can fix.
  4. Check whether the plan can track the search and AI questions you care about.
  5. Write the next action and assign it to a person.

If the test ends with a clear job, compare the paid limits for that job. If nobody can act on the findings yet, arrange the implementation before adding another subscription.

Where does Searchmaxxed fit?

Searchmaxxed runs a managed service that connects search data with work on your website and other sites. Our Managed Search Loop checks the evidence against your plan and picks the next job. Semrush and Ahrefs supply software; we handle the agreed research, changes and checks.

We do agentic SEO. We build AI agents that connect to your whole Search Console and GA4. Each week, they scrape competitors' sites and read Google results. They also check what AI answers say about you. Our Managed Search Loop uses that data to choose what to work on next.

We build new pages and fixes on your Agentic Website. We also handle schema, which describes page facts for machines, and internal links. Your site lives on GitHub and Vercel, and you own it. Our Off-Page Source Layer develops links, reviews, citations, press and mentions on other sites.

A person approves every change before it goes live. The agents then measure what the change did, and the loop picks the next job. Our SEO service covers that continuing work.

Searchmaxxed process connecting evidence, planning, approved changes and measurement
Searchmaxxed connects research with work on your site and other sites. A person approves every public change.

For example, suppose competitor research points to a service search your website doesn't answer. We'd inspect the results and compare them with your Search Console data. We'd build or improve the page and check the live change. We'd then review visits and enquiries before choosing the next change.

At Radiant Roof Repairs, I did the research and competitor checks manually. I also built the pages and handled the updates myself. That history shapes the process, not which of these two tools wins.

Our packages and inclusions set the delivery scope:

  • Local Search: local pages, daily Google Business Profile management, reviews, local links, listing cleanup and local AI tracking.
  • Growth System: 30 page releases a month, technical fixes, schema, internal links, landing-page work and source-layer basics.
  • Agentic Search Engineering: 50 page releases a month, comparison and industry pages, press and link campaigns, plus wider AI-answer tracking.
  • Custom & Enterprise: agreed scope for multiple markets, dedicated engineering, custom reporting and original research.

We recommend the scope after looking at your website, market and goals. Let's talk pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 5 best SEO tools?

My task-based shortlist is Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Frase and Surfer. Semrush and Ahrefs cover research, audits and tracking.[1][2] SE Ranking also publishes keyword, competitor and backlink research with website audits.[24] Frase and Surfer publish drafting and content-optimisation workflows.[25][26] Choose by the job; this shortlist doesn't rank their accuracy.

Is there anything better than Semrush?

Ahrefs Standard is my pick when broken-backlink reports and Content Explorer matter more than daily ranking updates.[2][6] SE Ranking is another option for keyword, competitor and backlink research.[24] Compare the feature you need and the plan that includes it before choosing an alternative.

Can Semrush be trusted?

Semrush publishes the features and allowances behind its plans, including tracked keywords, website monitoring and AI prompt limits.[1] I'd trust those as the vendor's offer and test the data against your own site before acting. An offer page cannot establish independent accuracy or predict your sales return.

What are the cons of Ahrefs?

Ahrefs' published limits include weekly Rank Tracker updates, 1,000 credits per Lite user and finite crawl, export and integration allowances.[2][6] Additional users, wider Brand Radar research and extra prompt checks can add costs.[2][7] Budget for the specific reports and update schedule you need.

Is Ahrefs cheaper than Semrush?

Ahrefs Lite costs $129 monthly against Semrush SEO at $139.95 monthly.[2][5] Ahrefs also offers Starter at $29, but its current card lacks the detail needed for a like-for-like comparison.[7] Compare the complete workflow, including any separate AI purchase or extra users.

Does Ahrefs offer a free trial?

Ahrefs' pricing FAQ offers limited free Site Explorer and Site Audit access through Ahrefs Free, rather than a stated paid-suite trial.[4] Use the free access for your own website, then check a paid plan's feature list before subscribing.

What are the limitations of Semrush Free?

Semrush Free includes one demo project and ten reports per day across its main tools.[3] It suits a first look at the software. A paid plan supplies larger monitoring allowances, so compare those limits when you need recurring work.[1]

What is Semrush used for?

Semrush publishes keyword research, competitor analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit in its SEO offer.[1] Its AI features also cover prompt research, brand portrayal and competitor comparisons.[17] I'd use those reports to choose the next page or fix, then assign someone to complete it.

Is Ahrefs good for keyword research?

Ahrefs publishes Keywords Explorer in Lite and adds keyword clusters, search intents, AI suggestions and translations in Standard.[2] I'd consider Standard if those features support your content plan. Test relevant Australian searches before treating a keyword estimate as a reason to build a page.

Should I use Semrush and Ahrefs together?

Use both when each has a distinct job, such as Semrush's daily ranking checks and Ahrefs Standard's content and link research.[1][2][6] Start with one if your team would repeat the same research in both. Add the second when you can name the decision it improves.

Can I connect Ahrefs or Semrush to AI assistants?

Ahrefs Lite includes MCP and API access with limits; Semrush Starter includes MCP access, and Advanced names API data integration.[2][6][1] Check the required data and request limits before connecting an assistant. Keep a person in charge of public changes.

Is Semrush worth the money for a small business?

I'd pay for Semrush when the team needs its daily rank tracking and can act on its research and audit findings.[1] Try the free account or advertised trial first.[3][23] Choose the plan for the work you will complete during the subscription.

Does Searchmaxxed handle work beyond the website?

Yes. Our Off-Page Source Layer develops links, reviews, citations, press and mentions on other sites. We choose that work alongside changes to your Agentic Website. The Managed Search Loop checks the evidence, and a person approves each public change before it goes live.
