SEO in Melbourne costs about A$1,000 to A$2,500 a month for most local businesses, going by the prices Melbourne providers publish on their own websites. Low-cost plans start at about A$150. Plans built for crowded trades, ecommerce or national reach run from A$4,400 to A$10,000 and up. Some providers add a setup fee of A$799 to A$1,199, and half of them don't say whether their monthly price includes GST. What sets your number is the services you sell, how much of Melbourne you want to cover, how crowded your trade is and what shape your website is in.

I read the pricing and service pages of 15 providers selling SEO to Melbourne businesses. Eight Melbourne-based providers publish a price, five don't, and two publish Melbourne prices from interstate. Every figure below links to the provider's own page, so you can hold any quote you get against them.

In summary

Budget about A$1,000 to A$2,500 a month for SEO in Melbourne if you sell locally, and more if you compete across the whole city or the whole country.

Your businessPublished Melbourne prices, per month
Low-cost or listing-only plansA$150 to A$549
One service, one part of MelbourneA$999 to A$2,500
Several services or regionsA$1,699 to A$2,800
Crowded trades, ecommerce, nationalA$4,400 to A$10,000+
  • Put every quote into ex-GST monthly figures first: A$1,500 plus GST is A$1,650 on the invoice.
  • Only three of the eight Melbourne providers with published prices say they bill month to month, so ask about the term before you ask about the price.
  • Melbourne is big. The more of it you want to win, the more pages, reviews and local work the plan has to pay for.

How much do Melbourne SEO agencies charge?

Melbourne providers that publish prices charge from about A$150 to A$10,000 and up a month, and most plans meant for a single local business sit between A$999 and A$2,500.

Melbourne agencies that don't publish a price

Agency and basePrice on its siteWhat it publishes instead
Cultivate Digital, OrmondNot publishedSays Melbourne SEO typically runs A$1,000 to A$3,000+ a month; offers a 3-month contract and a free audit it values at A$400
Dizian, MulgraveNot publishedIts guide puts Melbourne agency retainers at about A$2,500 to A$7,000+ and calls that "market observations, not our price list"; 30-day terms
Media Exchange, MelbourneNot publishedSays its average SEO retainer for Melbourne small-to-mid businesses in 2025 was A$3,085 a month, with clients staying 24 months on average
CJ Digital, HawthornNot publishedMarket bands: about A$800 to A$1,500 for narrow scope, A$1,500 to A$3,500 for most small businesses, above A$3,500 for full service
AndMine, Melbourne CBDNot publishedIts guide quotes A$1,000 to A$10,000 a month for agencies and A$75 to A$500 an hour for freelancers

Not published means the page names no fee for the agency's own work, so ask each one for a written quote on the same brief.

A few things jump out of these two tables. The cheapest plans count keywords, often three of them, while the dearer ones count blog posts, hours or links, which makes two plans hard to line up. Setup fees are common at the low end: A$890 before an A$249 plan is more than three months of the plan itself. And the one figure taken from a real client book, Media Exchange's A$3,085 average, lands well above most of the published entry prices. That's one agency's clients, not a market average. Still, it's a useful check on the entry plans: they're where many businesses start, priced for one service in one area.

What do you get at each price level?

Below about A$550 a month you get keyword tracking, a profile tidy-up and the odd article. Between A$999 and A$2,500 you get the local foundations. Steady content, link building and AI search work mostly start above that, in plans from about A$1,699 a month.

LevelPublished price per monthWhat Melbourne plans list
Low-costA$150 to A$549Three keywords on one target page, 10 backlinks and one blog a month at A$149.99; a rebuilt Business Profile, schema and suburb-tuned service pages in an A$890 setup, then rank tracking, posts and review replies at A$249
Local foundationsA$999 to A$2,500Up to 20 tracked terms, monthly error fixes and a quarterly blog at A$999; 9 keywords and one blog a month at another A$999 plan; Business Profile work, core technical fixes and citations at A$1,000 to A$2,500
GrowthA$1,699 to A$2,800Up to 40 terms, a monthly blog and quarterly competitor checks at A$1,699; two to four blogs a month at A$1,899 and A$2,799
CompetitiveA$4,400 to A$10,000+Large-scale content, digital PR, advanced technical SEO and AI search work for ecommerce, multi-location businesses and fierce markets

The low-cost plans are upfront about what they are. VisualWeb, for one, says it will tell you up front if you need a national campaign, a large ecommerce catalogue or link acquisition, rather than take it on. Three keywords and one page will suit a café with one suburb to win. It won't win a plumber jobs from Werribee to Frankston.

The jump from foundations to growth is mostly content. At A$999 one Werribee provider writes one blog a month; at A$2,799 it writes four. That's the clearest published picture of what the extra money buys in Melbourne: more pages, more often.

What changes the cost of SEO for a Melbourne business?

Four things set the price: how much of Melbourne you want to cover, how many services you sell, how crowded your trade is and whether your website can carry the work. Size is the Melbourne-specific one. Greater Melbourne had 5,435,600 people at 30 June 2025 and added 105,000 in a year, more than any other capital, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Your situationWhat the work addsWhere it sits in published Melbourne prices

Several servicesA page and a keyword set for each service, plus more content each monthA$1,699 to A$2,800

A website that needs fixing firstA rebuild, migration or setup before the monthly workSetup fees of A$799 to A$1,199; one Melbourne agency lists website floors from A$1,100 for a landing page to A$7,000 for ecommerce

Plan Melbourne splits the metropolitan area into six regions and more than 30 council areas, from Wyndham and Hume to Casey, Knox and the Mornington Peninsula. In my view, that spread is what makes Melbourne SEO cost more than people expect. A business in Box Hill isn't really competing for "Melbourne". It's competing in the eastern suburbs, then again in every region it wants to add, and each one needs its own pages, reviews and Maps work.

Growth corridors are the other side of it. The ABS says Melbourne's fastest-growing area in 2024-25 was Rockbank-Mount Cottrell, which added 4,600 people in a year. New estates fill up with households who need plumbers, clinics and childcare. If fewer established businesses rank there yet, winning those searches can take less work than winning in Richmond, so check the Maps results for your trade in those suburbs before you set a budget.

Trade matters too. One Cremorne agency's own industry guide puts dental SEO in Melbourne at A$3,000 to A$5,000 a month and family law in the CBD at A$4,000 to A$7,000, against A$1,200 to A$2,000 for a childcare centre in the west. Those are its estimates, but the order makes sense: the more firms fighting for the same search, the more work it takes to get past them.

A worked example: a plumber in the eastern suburbs

Take a plumber in Box Hill who wants more hot water jobs. Picture two versions of the same business.

Version one sells hot water replacements within a short drive of the van's usual run: Box Hill, Blackburn, Doncaster and Mitcham. That needs one sharp hot water page, a complete Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews and clean listings. A foundations plan in the A$999 to A$1,500 range covers it.

Version two adds blocked drains and gas fitting, and wants jobs in Casey and Cardinia because that's where the new estates are going up. Now each service needs its own page, the southern suburbs need area pages of their own, and the reviews need to come from those areas too.

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. Distance works against a Box Hill plumber chasing jobs in Berwick, so the plumber has to make up the gap elsewhere: better pages for relevance, and more reviews and links, which Google's page describes under prominence. That's growth-plan work, A$1,699 to A$2,800 a month on the published prices, before you count setup.

I'll come back to this plumber when we get to whether it pays.

Does the agency's location change the price?

Not much. Two providers based outside Melbourne publish Melbourne prices that land inside the same range as the local ones.

Provider and baseMelbourne price it publishes
EightySix Digital, says it isn't based in MelbourneFrom A$520 a month for four hours of local work; full plan from A$650; extra hours A$130; it adds no GST
QX Tech, CanberraA$1,080, A$1,380 or A$2,380 a month, or A$864, A$1,104 or A$1,904 a month on a 12-month plan

Both are from each provider's own Melbourne page on the same date. What matters more than the postcode is whether the agency knows your suburbs and competitors. Ask it to show you Maps results from the areas you want, not just from your own street.

Do Melbourne SEO agencies lock you into a contract?

Some do, and many don't say. Three of the eight Melbourne providers with published prices say month to month or no lock-in, one sells 3-month and 6-month terms, and four don't state a term on their pricing page.

TermWhat Melbourne providers publishAsk before you sign
Minimum termThree say month to month or no lock-in; one has 3-month or 6-month terms; one agency without a price list offers a 3-month contractHow long am I committed, and what does leaving early cost?
Notice30 days' written notice at one; 30-day terms at anotherWhen does the last invoice land?
Setup feesA$890 at one; A$799 and A$1,199 at another; A$0 at a thirdWhat do I own once it's paid?
Annual discounts20% off for a 12-month plan at one interstate providerIs the discount worth a year's commitment?
GSTFour of eight say ex GST or plus GST; four don't say for the monthly feeIs every figure ex GST?

A short term is a safety net, not a strategy. SEO still takes months to build, so judge the first 90 days on what actually went live: pages, fixes, reviews and links.

Do Melbourne SEO prices include GST?

Usually not. Every Melbourne provider in the first table that mentions GST on its monthly fee prices it ex GST or plus GST, and the other four leave it out. GST adds 10%, so an A$2,000 plan is A$2,200 on the invoice.

If your business is registered for GST, you can generally claim that back. The ATO says you need a tax invoice for purchases over A$82.50, your supplier has 28 days to give you one once you ask, and you can check a supplier's GST registration on ABN Lookup. A provider that isn't registered for GST won't charge it, and one interstate provider above says it adds no GST to its prices. Your accountant can tell you how it lands for you.

Is SEO worth the cost for a Melbourne business?

It's worth it when the profit from the extra jobs covers the fee. Price SEO against what a job is worth to you, because the cheapest quote on your desk says nothing about that.

Back to the Box Hill plumber. Say each hot water replacement leaves A$1,000 after parts and labour, and the growth plan costs A$2,000 a month ex GST. Two extra jobs a month covers it. Those are example figures, so put in your own margin and your own close rate. A plumber who also picks up the follow-up work, the gas service next winter and the referral to a neighbour, gets more from each job than the first invoice shows.

Roofing is where I learned this. A mate did the roofs; I did the marketing, sales and operations. Before Searchmaxxed, I built Radiant Roof Repairs from zero to more than A$1 million a year in revenue using SEO as the only marketing channel. Three high-intent Gold Coast roofing searches reached number one within 90 days. I did the pages, research, competitor checks and updates manually.

When we reached the map pack it was phone call after phone call: 1,487 calls came off our Google Business Profile. Most of that came through Google Maps. Finding people to do the work became the hard part.

That's a Gold Coast result from my own business, not a Melbourne forecast. The case study shows the work behind it.

How do you compare two Melbourne SEO quotes?

Get both quotes onto the same footing, then compare what goes live each month instead of the package names. This checklist does it.

  1. Convert each quote to a monthly figure ex GST, and put setup or build fees on their own line.
  2. Ask for the term in writing: month to month, 3 months, 6 months or 12.
  3. Ask what goes live each month. Pages, blog posts, hours, links and reviews all count, and a good agency will name them.
  4. Ask which services and which Melbourne suburbs or regions the plan covers, by name. "Melbourne" isn't an answer.
  5. If the plan counts keywords, ask which ones. Three keywords can mean three searches nobody makes.
  6. Ask who writes and builds the pages, and what a site change costs on top of the monthly fee.
  7. Ask how they'll check your Maps rankings across the areas you want, not just from your own address.
  8. Ask what you keep if you leave: the pages, the content, the accounts and the data.

Then apply one test to any quote that leans on a new website. A prettier page is great, but if it doesn't bring you leads, what's the point?

Where does Searchmaxxed fit?

Searchmaxxed is an SEO and AI SEO agency. We do technical SEO, local SEO, content, link building, GEO and AEO, and we work for two results for Melbourne businesses: ranking in Google and Google Maps, and getting named in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.

We quote each business after looking at its website, its market and its goals, and our pricing page lists what every package includes.

PackageWho it suitsWhat it includes
Local SearchMelbourne businesses that sell to a set of suburbs or regionsAt least 8 service, suburb and service-by-suburb page releases a month; daily Business Profile management; reviews; local links; citation cleanup; a monthly geo-grid scan; local AI answer tracking
Growth SystemBusinesses selling across Melbourne or beyond it30 page releases a month; optimisation of up to 4 existing landing pages a month; citations, profiles and reviews; one qualified link action a month; AI visibility tracking
Agentic Search EngineeringCrowded or national markets50 page releases a month; comparison, industry and integration pages; digital PR and link campaigns; AI answer tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews
Custom & EnterpriseSeveral markets or very large sitesDedicated engineering, custom reporting and original research

A page release is an approved new page or a substantial rebuild. Every managed package also covers continuous audits, a 90-day plan broken into weekly releases, the build work itself and a monthly decision memo. You own the site, the repository, the content and the data from day one. Terms are monthly, six-month or 12-month, agreed on the call. Local Search starts with an Agentic Migration or a Full Build, and the AI SEO Audit is included when you join.

Here's how the work runs. We build on a website you own. AI agents pull your Search Console and GA4 data, your rankings, your competitors' pages and what AI answers say about you. That data shows us which page, fix or link should bring in the most enquiries next. Then we build it, check the live page and measure what it brings in, so the following week's work starts from real numbers. Off the site, we build the links, reviews, citations and mentions that back your business up.

For the Box Hill plumber, that would mean a page for each service, pages for the suburbs and regions worth winning, a Business Profile that's kept current and reviews coming in from the right areas. Our Melbourne SEO page sets out that work. Searchmaxxed's work has generated more than A$10 million in revenue through search for its clients. To get a quote for your site, let's talk pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does local SEO cost in Melbourne?

Published local SEO plans in Melbourne start at A$249 a month after an A$890 setup fee, and most local plans with content included sit between A$999 and A$2,500. The difference is coverage. Ask how many services and suburbs each plan covers before comparing two prices.

What is the cheapest SEO in Melbourne?

The lowest published Melbourne price is A$149.99 a month for three keywords on one page, with 10 backlinks and one blog post. It can do for a single low-competition search. For a trade competing across several suburbs, budget for a managed plan.

How much does an SEO consultant charge per hour in Melbourne?

One Cremorne agency publishes consulting at A$150 to A$300 an hour, and one interstate provider prices extra hours on its Melbourne plans at A$130. Most Melbourne providers sell monthly plans or fixed projects rather than hours, so ask for the hours behind any plan you're offered.

Do Melbourne SEO agencies charge setup fees?

Some do. Published setup fees run from A$799 to A$1,199, and one provider charges nothing to start. Ask what the setup fee buys and what you keep once it's paid.

Is A$500 a month enough for SEO in Melbourne?

For one low-competition service near your base, it can be. Published plans at that level track a few keywords and keep a Business Profile current. One Melbourne agency's guide says plans under about A$800 a month rarely work in competitive Melbourne categories, and that matches what the plan inclusions show: there's little room for new pages or links.

Does AI SEO cost extra in Melbourne?

Sometimes. One Melbourne consultant includes AI search in monthly plans from A$1,500 plus GST, one Canberra provider lists GEO in its A$2,380 plan, and one interstate provider sells GEO as an add-on to its Melbourne plans. Ask which AI answers they check, then ask who changes your pages when those answers leave you out.

How long should I give SEO before judging it?

Judge the first 90 days on what went live: pages built, fixes made, reviews earned and links won. Rankings and enquiries take longer to show, so judge those over the months that follow, against the searches you agreed at the start.

Is SEO a monthly cost or a one-off cost?

Mostly monthly. Ongoing rankings take steady work because competitors and Google keep moving, so most Melbourne providers sell retainers. One-off jobs still exist: one Melbourne agency's guide lists audits and migrations as project work, and one Melbourne consultant sells SEO Sprints from A$2,000 plus GST each, usually three sprints a few months apart.

How much does an SEO audit cost in Melbourne?

Published Melbourne audit prices run from free to A$3,300. One Melbourne consultant starts a full SEO audit at A$2,000 plus GST, one Docklands agency says its audit is normally A$3,300 including GST, and one Ormond agency offers a free audit it values at A$400. Ask whether the audit fee comes off the first month if you go ahead.

How much does ecommerce SEO cost in Melbourne?

Expect about A$5,000 a month and up for a national online store. One Cremorne agency's industry guide puts a 500-plus product national store at A$5,000 to A$8,000 a month, and one Docklands agency's market table puts ecommerce at A$5,000 to A$10,000. Product schema, category pages and links across a large catalogue are what lift the price.

Can SEO get me found in suburbs where I don't have an office?

Partly. Google weighs the searcher's distance from your business heavily in the map pack, so you'll rank most easily close to your address. Suburb pages on your website and reviews from those areas extend your reach, mostly in the normal organic results, and that extra coverage is a big part of what the dearer Melbourne plans pay for.

Can I do SEO myself instead of paying an agency?

Yes. A Google Business Profile is free, and Google charges nothing for organic rankings. Your cost is time. Start with a complete Business Profile and one page for each service you sell, then add suburb pages for the areas you want most.

What should you do next?

Write down the two services and the Melbourne suburbs that bring your best jobs, then hold every quote against the tables above. If you'd like us to scope it, let's talk.
