TLDR

Published Australian guidance puts SEO consultant costs at $150-$300 an hour, with higher rates in other guides.[1][2]

Payment modelPublished guide
Hourly advice$150-$300/hour
Audit or migration$2,000-$10,000/project
Growth-tier ongoing SEO$1,500-$3,000/month

The monthly figure describes ongoing SEO, not a solo consultant's average fee.[3] Choose advice when your team can act on it. Choose managed work when you also need someone to build pages or fix the site.

An SEO consultant can cost $150-$300 an hour in Australia, according to StudioHawk's published guide.[1] The same guide puts audits or migrations at $2,000-$10,000 per project.[1] Ask whether the fee covers advice, implementation or both.

I run Searchmaxxed and put it first in the delivery comparison. This is my buying advice, with published prices from the named sources.

What is the SEO consultant cost per hour in Australia?

StudioHawk publishes SEO consultant rates of $150-$300 per hour in Australia.[1] Safari Digital gives an indicative range of $180-$300+ per hour, excluding GST.[2] Use these as budgeting guides, then request a quote for your actual task.

Sources checked 6 October 2026.[1][2][4] GST not stated for StudioHawk or Paramark; confirm the tax treatment before comparing quotes.[1][4] Safari describes its figures as indicative.[2] These are the publishers' estimates, not a survey of every Australian consultant.[1][2][4]

Hourly advice suits a defined question. StudioHawk describes hourly work for deep audits, urgent fixes and training internal teams.[5] Paramark identifies strategy and an audit as reasons to hire a consultant by the hour.[4]

For a small task, I would ask for a capped estimate and a clear finish point. Include preparation, the call and the written recommendations in that estimate. Ask who can approve extra time before the consultant starts.

How much does a one-off SEO project cost?

StudioHawk publishes $2,000-$10,000 for one-off audits or migrations, with narrower ranges for each task.[1][6] A fixed project needs an agreed output and a clear boundary around implementation.

ProjectStudioHawk guideSafari Digital guide
Website audit$2,000-$5,000$3,000-$10,000+
Website migration$3,000-$10,000$2,500-$10,000+
Content audit and plan$2,000-$6,000No figure given

Safari's figures exclude GST; StudioHawk's guide gives no tax note.[2][6]

StudioHawk's published project ranges for audits, migrations and content plans
StudioHawk pricing guide, captured 6 October 2026. These ranges describe different projects, not matching scopes.

For an audit, ask for the affected pages and evidence behind each problem. Request a priority order, proposed fix and person responsible for carrying it out. Make the review call part of the scope.

For a migration, ask whether the project covers planning alone or the move and checks after launch. Specify who handles redirects, page changes and the live-site review. The word migration on a proposal tells you less than the list of jobs beneath it.

For a content audit, separate the plan from rewriting and uploading pages. StudioHawk calls this offer a content audit and optimisation plan.[6] Confirm the cost of carrying out that plan before signing.

How much does monthly SEO consulting cost?

StudioHawk's $1,500-$3,000 monthly growth tier describes ongoing SEO work, not an average fee for a solo consultant.[3] A monthly consulting quote should say which advice, meetings and implementation it includes.

The distinction matters when someone offers a retainer. A monthly call and an action list are one scope. Research, writing, development and ongoing checks are another. Ask the provider to spell out which one you are buying.

StudioHawk's growth-tier guide includes keyword research, content work, links, on-page changes, technical fixes and reporting on conversions.[3] Safari describes ongoing SEO retainers covering technical updates, link building, content updates and content marketing.[7]

Paramark gives $1,200-$2,500 per month for small-business SEO.[8] It says the lower end may cover website optimisation, while the higher end should include website and Google Business Profile optimisation.[8]

Those figures describe broader SEO services, not a uniform monthly fee for independent consultants.[3][8]

I would compare the recurring jobs first. Ask what happens between meetings, which pages change and who handles technical work. For wider service budgets, see how much SEO costs in Australia.

What does an SEO consultant do for the fee?

An SEO consultant diagnoses search problems, plans changes and advises how to carry them out.[4][9] The quote defines whether the consultant also writes, develops and publishes the work. Google's guidance describes SEO as helping search engines discover and understand content.[10]

Safari's task list covers keyword research, competitor research, audits, technical changes, copywriting, links, off-site strategy and reporting.[9] I would turn that list into deliverables you can recognise:

Work to specifyWhat to request
Keyword and competitor researchRelevant searches, competing pages and the page you should improve
Website auditFaults, affected URLs, evidence and a priority order
Technical adviceA fix description your developer can act on
Content planningThe page's question, structure, facts and next action
Off-site workProposed links, profiles or mentions and who develops them
MeasurementStarting data, completed changes and the next decision

Ask the consultant to show how the diagnosis changes the work. If a service page gets visits but few enquiries, I would ask about its offer and enquiry path. If search engines cannot reach the page, I would address access first.

Request the next concrete change and the evidence behind it. A recommendation should tell your team what to do when the meeting ends.

At Searchmaxxed, our SEO service joins research with implementation. We handle technical SEO, plan pages through content strategy and develop outside support through link building. Our local SEO work also covers business profiles, reviews and local sources.

Should you hire an SEO consultant or an agency?

I recommend an SEO consultant when your team can implement the advice, and an agency when you also need people to produce the work. At Searchmaxxed, we handle the agreed implementation and checks. Judge the proposal by who researches, writes, fixes and releases changes.

OptionChoose it whenConfirm before hiring
SearchmaxxedYou want managed pages, fixes and outside sourcesPackage scope and weekly release plan
Independent consultantYour team needs specialist adviceImplementation owner and review time
SEO agencyYou need several delivery skillsNamed people and included work

These are my fit recommendations. Searchmaxxed handles implementation, human approval and measurement through its managed packages. Safari describes an agency model with technical, development, off-site and content specialists.[11]

A consultant's proposal can include hands-on work. Paramark's consultant example centres on analysing the website and explaining problems and opportunities.[4] Ask about the specific arrangement rather than relying on the job title.

I would choose specialist advice for a developer team with a defined problem. I would ask for managed delivery when nobody has time to write the pages or make the fixes. If you are shortlisting teams, compare the Australian SEO agencies against the work you need.

What drives an SEO consultant's fee?

An SEO consultant's expertise, project scope and urgency affect the hourly rate in StudioHawk's guide.[5] Its wider pricing factors include competition, website health, geographic scope, content work and AI search work.[12]

Safari adds the number of services or products, existing SEO work and the amount of new content or repair work.[13] A quote should explain which of those factors applies to you.

I would ask the consultant to separate the work into jobs:

  • Find the problem and support the diagnosis.
  • Write the plan and explain the order.
  • Produce the agreed pages or fixes.
  • Review the live changes and measure progress.

Ask which jobs need your staff. Include their time in your budget discussion. A lower advisory fee makes sense when your team has the skills and time to finish the work.

If AI search is part of the scope, ask which engines the consultant checks and which changes follow from those checks. Searchmaxxed's AEO service covers answer-engine work. Our GEO service covers generative search work within the same managed system.

How do you brief an SEO consultant?

Send an SEO consultant a six-part brief before requesting a quote: goal, market, website, evidence, delivery owner and scope. Offer access to the relevant data, then agree who can change the site.

  1. Goal. Name the enquiries or sales you want to grow. Say which services or products matter most.
  2. Market. Give the locations you genuinely serve and the competitors you face.
  3. Website. Share the URL, platform, important pages and any planned redesign or migration.
  4. Evidence. Offer Search Console and GA4 access. Share previous SEO work and the enquiries your sales team considers worthwhile.
  5. Delivery owner. Name the person who can approve copy and the person who can make website changes.
  6. Scope. Say whether you want advice, an audit, implementation or recurring work. Ask for inclusions, exclusions and review dates.
A consulting brief connects the business goal, website evidence and delivery owner
Name the person who will act on the advice before you buy it.

Here is a brief you can adapt:

> We want more enquiries for our priority service in the area we serve. Please review our service page and search data. Explain the main problem and recommend the first changes. Our developer can handle technical fixes. Our team will approve copy. Quote the research, recommendations and a review after implementation. Price any writing or development separately.

Replace each general phrase in the sample brief with your real service, market and people.

Ask the consultant to explain the plan using your site. StudioHawk's proposal checklist calls for scope, deliverables, dates, reporting and who handles the work.[14] Request those fields before comparing the fee.

How do you compare quotes and spot red flags?

Compare SEO quotes by scope, outputs, dates, measurement and who does the work.[14] StudioHawk identifies those fields in its proposal checklist.[14] Ask each provider to answer the six questions below.

Quote questionDetail to request
What does the fee buy?Named tasks, outputs and exclusions
Who implements it?Consultant, your team or another supplier
What costs extra?Writing, development, tools and outside work
What happens next?Milestones and a review date
How will we judge progress?Starting data, enquiries and completed changes
What happens when we stop?Access, files, ownership and notice terms

I would pause a proposal that cannot name the first job. I would also pause if nobody owns implementation or the quote leaves extra costs open. Ask for a sample recommendation and an explanation of how they would apply it to your site.

For content work, Google's quality questions ask about original information, clear sources, accuracy and added value beyond other pages.[15] Ask to see the work you would receive, including the facts behind it.

Keep ranking promises separate from scope commitments. Ask for the work schedule, the evidence and the review process. Searchmaxxed's Managed Search Loop includes checks of the live changes and a review of the results.

Where does Searchmaxxed fit?

Searchmaxxed fits when you want us to run the work as well as plan it. We do agentic SEO: AI agents help us research and measure, while people approve changes. Our Managed Search Loop links those checks to the next job.

We are a Queensland team serving businesses across Australia. Our agents plug into your whole Search Console and GA4. They read your competitors' sites, Google results and AI answers about your business every week.

The Managed Search Loop checks that evidence against your plan. We choose the next job, such as fixing a blocked page or building a missing service page.

We do the page work on your Agentic Website. It lives on GitHub and Vercel, and you own it. We build new pages and fix copy, schema and internal links. Schema gives machines labelled facts about a page.

Our Off-Page Source Layer develops links, reviews, citations, press and mentions on other sites. Citations are business records on other sites. We align those records with your real business details.

A person approves every public change before it goes live. Then the agents measure what happened, and we choose the next job.

Searchmaxxed's agents gather evidence, people approve changes and the loop measures results
Searchmaxxed's Managed Search Loop connects evidence, approved website changes and the next job.

Before Searchmaxxed, I built Radiant Roof Repairs from zero to more than $1 million a year in revenue. SEO was the only marketing channel. Three high-intent Gold Coast roofing searches reached number one within 90 days. I did the pages, research, competitor checks and updates manually.

Our packages set the production scope:

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost in Australia?

Safari Digital publishes an indicative range of $1,400-$10,000+ per month for SEO services, excluding GST.[16][2] That covers wider ongoing SEO, so compare it with a consultant's quote only after matching the scope.

Is it worth paying for SEO?

I would pay for SEO when the plan targets customers you can serve and someone can carry out the work. Judge progress through enquiries and sales alongside search data. Keep a record of each change so you can link results to the work.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

Yes, when search can bring customers to your business and you can fund the work. Google describes SEO as helping search engines discover and understand content.[10] I would start with your market and current website, then decide which changes deserve the budget.

Does an SEO specialist do different work from a consultant?

Ask about the scope before treating the titles as different services. Safari's specialist task list spans research, audits, technical work, copywriting, links and reporting.[9] Confirm which tasks the person will do and which they will hand to your team.

Do SEO consultant rates include GST?

Check the quote because the published guides do not share one tax treatment.[1][2][4] Safari's indicative rates exclude GST.[2] The StudioHawk and Paramark guides give no tax note for their consultant rates.[1][4]

Does an SEO consultant's fee include a developer and content writer?

Include development and writing only when the quote names them. StudioHawk's proposal checklist asks who handles uploads, technical changes and outreach.[14] Request a separate price for any job your own team cannot perform.

Can you negotiate an SEO consulting fee?

Ask to reduce or phase the scope, then request a revised quote. I would keep the first problem and its review intact. Move optional work to a later decision and agree the cost of extra time before it starts.

How long should you allow to judge SEO work?

Set a delivery date and a later results review. Paramark says SEO can take three to six months to show results.[17] Treat that as its guidance, not a deadline for your site. Ask to inspect completed changes while longer-term results develop.

Should I use a global SEO pricing survey to set my Australian budget?

Use Australian scope and currency for your quote. StudioHawk's Australian guide publishes $150-$300 per hour for consulting.[1] I would compare that local guidance with actual proposals before importing a global headline figure.

How much does an SEO consultant charge for an audit?

StudioHawk's guide lists $2,000 to $5,000 for a website audit.[6] Safari Digital lists $3,000 to $10,000+, excluding GST.[2] Ask whether the audit includes a priority order and a review call.
